Angels vs Yankees: Giancarlo Stanton set for season debut vs Angels after 70-game absence
Giancarlo Stanton
is set to make his long-awaited season debut for the
New York Yankees
on Monday night against the
Los Angeles Angels
, returning after missing 70 games due to elbow inflammation.
The power-hitting slugger has been sidelined since the start of the season but is now fully recovered and ready to bolster the Yankees' lineup. Stanton's return provides a major boost for a New York team chasing momentum in the AL playoff race.
The Yankees reinstated Stanton from the 60-day injured list, slotting him into the lineup as the designated hitter, batting fifth against the Angels. The team also designated infielder/outfielder
Pablo Reyes
for assignment.

Stanton, 35, has missed the entire season so far while recovering from tendinitis in both elbows - an issue he battled through during the second half of last year.
Live Events
Initially placed on the 10-day IL in late March, he was later moved to the 60-day IL in May due to persistent right and left elbow epicondylitis that resurfaced before spring training.
Stanton recently played in rehab games with Double-A Somerset. He went 3-for-11 with a double and four RBIs, showing promising signs ahead of his return to the big league lineup.
Last season, Stanton played exclusively as a DH, batting .233 with 27 home runs and 72 RBIs over 114 games. Since joining the Yankees, he has hit .241 with 162 homers and 431 RBIs across seven seasons, but persistent injuries - including calf, hamstring, Achilles, and elbow issues - have kept him to an average of just 94.7 games per season.
Ahead of Monday's game, manager Aaron Boone also announced that right-handed reliever
Jake Cousins
will undergo Tommy John surgery on Wednesday, ending his season before it began.

(Image via Kylie Young IG: Kylie Young with Jack Bech) Sorry, I'm obsessed w(with) the view - shares Kylie Young, girlfriend of Las Vegas Raiders' newest WR Jack Bech. What was the view? It's a shirtless back profile of the wide receiver. Not just that, but a poolside that merged with a picturesque view of lowlands, greenery, hilly ranges, and blue sky. No surprise, it demanded obsession! For one, it featured Young's heartthrob, Jack Bech. And for two, it had a postcard of the breathtaking lowlands! And people who admire the mountains are built of stability, serenity, and resilience - are also well-grounded. That's precisely what the Las Vegas Raiders need now. That's also why they hired 73-year-old Pete Carroll. 'Having run through four head coaches since 2021, the Raiders need stability.' - wrote multiple contributors at ESPN in January 2025. Ever since then, the Raiders have only drafted and signed players that would offer them more stability and mountain-lover Jack Bech fits the exact description! ICC ready for 4-day Tests in 2027-29 WTC cycle; India, Australia, England to still play 5-day matches: Report
London: The International Cricket Council ( ICC ) is ready to sanction four-day Tests for smaller nations in the 2027-29 World Test Championship cycle but India, Australia and England can still play the traditional five-day matches , according a report here. The move to reduce matches by one day would be a significant change and can help smaller nations to play more Tests and longer series. "During discussions last week at the WTC final at Lord's, the ICC chair, Jay Shah , is understood to have expressed his support for four-day Tests, with a view to sanctioning them in time for the 2027-29 WTC cycle," a report in "The Guardian' newspaper said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Perfectly Timed Photos You Won't Believe Are Real Read More "England, Australia and India would still be permitted to schedule five-Test series of five-day matches for the Ashes, the Border-Gavaskar Trophy and the newly named Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, the first iteration of which begins with the first Test between England and India at Headingley on Friday." The ICC first sanctioned four-day Tests for bilateral contests in 2017. England played Zimbabwe over four days at Trent Bridge last month after four-day Tests against Ireland in 2019 and 2023. Live Events According to the report, "many smaller nations are reluctant to host Tests due to the time they take out of the schedule and the cost, but a move to four-day cricket would enable an entire three-Test series to be played in less than three weeks." "In four-day Tests the playing hours are extended to mandate a minimum of 98 overs per day rather than 90 overs to mitigate the time lost," it said. "South Africa's threadbare itinerary despite being crowned world champions in the thrilling final against Australia at Lord's last week has further highlighted the issue, and focused minds on the need for change," it added. The 2025-27 World Test Championship will, however, will continue under the existing format of five-day matches. It begins with Sri Lanka hosting Bangladesh in a two-Test series on Tuesday. Of the 27 Test series to be played among nine countries contesting in the 2025-27 cycle, 17 will feature just two-match affairs whereas there will be six series of three matches. England, Australia and India will all play a five-Test series each against the other.
