Indonesian navy seizes RM1.8b in cocaine and meth on Thai-flagged ship

Malay Mail16-05-2025

JAKARTA, May 16 — Indonesia's navy seized a ship carrying nearly two tons of methamphetamine and cocaine worth US$425 million (RM1.8 billion) off Sumatra this week, and arrested a Thai national and four Myanmar nationals found aboard the vessel, the navy said today.
Officers apprehended the ship after it turned off its lights and increased its speed to try to flee Indonesian waters in the Tanjung Balai Karimun region of Riau Islands province, the navy said.
Officers seized nearly 100 yellow and white sacks holding about 1.2 tonnes of cocaine and 705 kilogrammes of methamphetamine worth 7 trillion rupiah (RM1.8 billion), navy spokesperson, I Made Wira Hady Arsanta Wardhana, said in a statement.
Indonesia has among the world's strictest anti-narcotics laws and drug trafficking is punishable by death.
The navy said the ship, bearing a Thai flag, was taken to a navy base in Tanjung Balai Karimun. It did not give details of the crew members' origins apart from their nationalities.
Officials are still investigating where the drugs came from and where the ship was headed, navy official Fauzi, who goes by one name, said in a press conference.
The seizure is among the largest busts in the country.
A record 190 tons of methamphetamine were seized in East and Southeast Asia in 2023 as organised crime groups exploited weak law enforcement to traffic the drugs, mainly via the Gulf of Thailand, the UN Office on Drugs and Crime said in a 2024 report.
The Golden Triangle — an area of northeast Myanmar that meets parts of Thailand and Laos — has a long history of producing drugs, mainly used by Asian crime syndicates which distribute the narcotics as far as Japan and New Zealand.
In 2022, 179 kg of cocaine were found in waters near the port of Merak on Java island, at the time the largest cocaine seizure in the country, the United Nations drug agency said in a 2023 global report on cocaine. — Reuters

Dozens nabbed for running Bali love scam targeting American men

The scammers chatted up their victims through Telegram and sent them fake links. (EPA Images pic) DENPASAR : Indonesian police have arrested dozens on the popular resort island of Bali for allegedly running a love scam syndicate targeting American men, they said today. Police made the arrests after being tipped off about suspicious activity at a rented home in Denpasar, the island's capital. A total of 38 suspects, seven of them women, were arrested. 'They pretended to be women by using women's pictures and fake identity to ensnare their victims,' Bali police chief Daniel Adityajaya told a press conference. The scammers confessed they were working for someone who controlled the business from Cambodia to lure American men to hand over sensitive information, he said. They chatted up their victims through the Telegram messenger app and sent them fake links. The suspects were paid US$200 each per month to steal the victims' data and information, Daniel said. The suspects, all Indonesians, face up to 12 years in prison if found guilty of violating the country's electronic transaction law. Police had previously said many scammers had moved to Indonesia and other Southeast Asian countries after China cracked down on domestic networks. In 2019, Indonesian police arrested 85 Chinese nationals and six Indonesians over an online scam that tricked victims out of millions of dollars. In 2023, they arrested 88 Chinese nationals in Batam, in the Indonesian province of Riau Islands, for running a syndicate that has scammed hundreds of victims in China by luring them into sexual acts and then blackmailing them with video footage. Many of the victims were public officials, police said.

In Singapore, drug trafficker dodges death penalty by 0.01g, jailed 31 years

SINGAPORE, June 11 — A 58-year-old man has been sentenced to 31 years' jail for drug trafficking and money laundering in Singapore, narrowly escaping the gallows by a fraction of a gram. The Straits Times reported today that Mesnawi Dahri was arrested in Ang Mo Kio on January 27, 2023, after Central Narcotics Bureau (CNB) officers found him in possession of 713g of heroin and four Ecstasy tablets. Further analysis confirmed that the amount of pure heroin — or diamorphine — he had for trafficking was 14.99g, just below the 15g threshold that would have mandated the death penalty. The original charge against Mesnawi stated he was trafficking 'not less than 15g' of diamorphine. However, it was later reclassified after verification of the drug weight, according to court documents. Under Singapore law, trafficking more than 15g of pure heroin carries a mandatory death sentence. Mesnawi pleaded guilty on June 3 to four charges — three related to drug offences and one for money laundering. Two other drug-related charges were taken into consideration during sentencing. He received 31 years' imprisonment in total, including 10 weeks for the money laundering offence under the Corruption, Drug Trafficking and Other Serious Crimes (Confiscation of Benefits) Act. CNB officers had seized S$18,050 (RM59,477) in cash from Mesnawi, which the court determined to be proceeds from his drug activities. The money has since been forfeited to the state. Penalties for laundering drug money in Singapore include up to 10 years in jail and fines of up to $500,000. Mesnawi, who did not have legal representation during the proceedings, has filed an appeal against his sentence.

Kelantan police propose border wall to curb smuggling activities

KOTA BARU, June 11 — A permanent wall or fence along the Kelantan–Thailand border is viewed as the most effective solution to combat persistent smuggling activities in the state, said Kelantan police chief Datuk Mohd Yusoff Mamat. He said the 45-kilometre border stretch remains too exposed, making comprehensive enforcement challenging. 'For that entire stretch, we have only eight control posts. Naturally, there are many gaps that continue to be exploited by smugglers,' he said. 'In my opinion, only the construction of a complete border wall can effectively address this issue,' he told reporters at a press conference held in conjunction with the Kelantan Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department's (NCID) 2025 Case Disposal event at the state police headquarters here today. Mohd Yusoff added that the proposal to construct the wall had been submitted to the relevant authorities some time ago. He also noted a shift in drug trafficking trends in Kelantan, with smugglers now preferring to bring in smaller quantities compared to the large consignments seen previously. This change, he said, followed tighter enforcement and restrictions on cross-border movement through illegal entry points along Sungai Golok. 'Previously, we made large seizures. Now, traffickers are more cautious and smuggle in smaller amounts. Still, yaba pills remain the most in-demand drug in the state,' he said. — Bernama
