Essendon and veteran midfielder Dylan Shiel part ways following disappointing 2025 season

7NEWSa day ago
Veteran midfielder Dylan Shiel's future as an AFL player is suddenly in doubt.
Essendon and Shiel have parted ways and it is unclear if there is any interest from rival clubs in the 32 year-old.
He has been in and out of the team this year, falling out of favour after Round 10 when the Bombers were thrashed by the Western Bulldogs.
Shiel was then dropped and, despite an injury crisis engulfing the club, coach Brad Scott refused to get him back into the team.
Eventually, as the Bombers ran out of players, Shiel was finally called back for the Round 19 clash against his former side, the GWS Giants.
The 2017 All-Australian does not have a deal for next season and Essendon have no interest in extending his contract.
It has been reported that even if the club wanted to re-sign him, he would have declined.
The Bombers signed Shiel on good money ahead of the 2019 season. They also gave up two first-round draft picks for the midfielder.
St Kilda have previously expressed interest in Shiel.
He was on their radar in 2023, but they cooled following concerns about his body and form.
However, in 2024 the Saints' interest in the midfielder was rekindled but again it mounted to nothing.
Shiel is still keen to play AFL next year.
And when he has been given the opportunity, he has shown he can still be a strong contributor.
He started the year at half-back, but when he was moved into his preferred midfield spot for the game against Melbourne in Round 5, he was among the team's best with a 30-disposal (and a goal) game.
In the Round 20 clash against the Bulldogs, Shiel also had 29 touches.
He was banned for last week's match against St Kilda following a curious incident where he pushed Geelong's Mark O'Connor into his own teammate Luamon Lual.
The tribunal took almost two hours to reach a verdict after a hearing that went for 66 minutes.
Scott said about the incident that Essendon had been punished three times: a free kick against Shiel during the game, an injury to Lual, and a ban to Shiel.

McReight to captain Wallabies, Valetini returns for second Boks clash

Queensland flanker Fraser McReight will lead the Wallabies for the first time after injured captain Harry Wilson was left out of a side to meet the Springboks again in Cape Town on Sunday. Wilson's absence with a knee injury will pave the way for a seamless return of star No.8 Rob Valetini, however, after the Brumbies backrower missed the third Lions Test in Sydney and historic win over the Boks at Ellis Park with a calf injury. Valetini, who also missed the Fiji Test and first Lions Test with the calf issue, was superb in his only half against the second Test against the Lions in Melbourne Wilson left the field in Johannesburg with a knee issue and though scans cleared him of major damage, a Wallabies press release said the big No.8 was being 'managed'. The shift at No.8 was one of only three changes to a relatively settled starting, with confirmation the fastest man in Australian rugby, Corey Toole, will make his starting debut on the left wing in the place of Dylan Pietsch (broken jaw), and Tom Robertson picked to start at loosehead prop after James Slipper (HIA) was ruled out. In a sign of how valuable Angus Bell's impact from the bench is now seen, Robertson has come from outside the 23-man squad that won for the first time in 62 years at Ellis Park on Sunday. Bell has been superb entering the game in the second half, and instead of promoting Bell to start, Wallabies coach Joe Schmidt has elected to keep the powerhouse Waratahs prop up his sleeve as a one-man bomb squad from the bench. Tate McDermott, too, will continue to come from the bench, meaning Nic White and James O'Connor will remain the starting halves. In the only other change to the side, Nick Champion de Crespigny has come onto the bench to replace Langi Gleeson.

It's Toole-time for the Wallabies as history beckons

Speedster Corey Toole will make his Test debut in one of three changes to the Wallabies starting side as they attempt to go back-to-back against the Springboks in South Africa for the first time since 1963. The 25-year-old Paris Olympics sevens star will replace injured winger Dylan Pietsch for their Rugby Championship clash in Cape Town on Sunday (1.10am AEST). Skipper Harry Wilson has failed to overcome a knee issue with Rob Valetini making a timely return at No.8, while Tom Robertson will start in the front row after James Slipper was ruled out after a head knock. Wilson's Queensland teammate Fraser McReight will lead the side, the flanker becoming the 91st player to captain Australia. After their astounding 38-22 comeback win over the Springboks last week at Ellis Park, the Wallabies are looking to duplicate the 1963 tourists, who claimed victories at Johannesburg and Cape Town. No Australian side has won in Cape Town in 33 years, with the Wallabies losing their last seven straight at the picturesque venue. ACT Brumbies flyer Toole has been knocking at the door for a Test call-up for the past three years and likely would have made his debut last year but was drafted into Australia's sevens teams for Paris. With the more versatile Andrew Kellaway remaining on the bench, Toole's start comes after Pietsch required surgery on a fractured jaw after his tackle went wrong. Known as the fastest man in Australian rugby, Toole has been one of the Brumbies' best performers in the past three seasons, bagging 28 tries. Wallabies coach Joe Schmidt said the side had recovered well after the physical encounter at altitude and had identified their slow start - trailing 22-0 - as an area they needed to improve. "The squad as a whole has recovered pretty well from what was a very draining and physical Test match on the highveld last week," he said in a statement."We struggled to contain a powerhouse Springbok start last weekend and we know that we have to improve leading into what's likely to be a bruising encounter in Cape Town." Rather than match South Africa's six-two bench split, Schmidt has retained the five-three selection among his reserves, although has replaced Langi Gleeson with Nick Champion de Crespigny. WALLABIES: Tom Wright, Max Jorgensen, Joseph Suaalii, Len Ikitau, Corey Toole, James O'Connor, Nic White, Rob Valetini, Fraser McReight (capt), Tom Hooper, Will Skelton, Nick Frost, Taniela Tupou, Billy Pollard, Tom Robertson. Reserves: Brandon Paenga-Amosa, Angus Bell, Zane Nonggorr, Jeremy Williams, Nick Champion de Crespigny, Tane Edmed, Tate McDermott, Andrew Kellaway.

NRL 2025 LIVE updates: Johnston eyes try-scoring record as Rabbitohs host Dragons

Go to latest Pinned post from 7.26pm Vote now - who will win? 7.36pm Late changes St George Illawarra have made a few moves on game day. Damien Cook moves from hooker to lock, Jacob Liddle moves from the bench to hooker, Ben Murdoch-Masila goes from lock to a spot on the interchange, Raymond Faitala-Mariner moves from 18th man to the interchange, and Tyrell Sloan is now the 18th man. It's interesting to see the Dragons choose mobility over bulk in their starting forward pack. It isn't the usual tactic on wet nights. Let's see how that goes. The Rabbitohs will start 1-17. 7.36pm View from the ground By Christian Nicolussi There is next to nobody inside Accor Stadium, so let's hope Alex Johnston does not score four tries and breaks Ken Irvine's try-scoring record. To be fair, the rubbish in Sydney has been rubbish – the rain has finally just stopped – and the gates did not open the to the general public until 7pm. Both teams will not play finals, but the addition of Kaeon Koloamatangi, the weakened Dragons' middle, the form of Souths fullback Jye Gray, and the emotional toll the Red V must be feeling after so many close contests the past month, has me leaning towards the Rabbits. 7.33pm Rage … and the machines Apologies to Zack de la Rocha and Co. for that but Andrew Johns summed it up pretty well in column today when he delved into the four coaches guiding sides into a bumper Friday night slate of matches. With Ricky Stuart and Craig Bellamy, you'll never need to ask them how they feel. With Cameron Ciraldo and Ivan Cleary, it can be a little more cryptic. Who better than rugby league's eighth Immortal to take us into this world. 7.32pm Joey and Freddie give us their winners 7.26pm It's all about AJ Yes, Alex Johnston does need four tries tonight to break Ken Irvine's Australian record of 212. Four tries in a match is a lot - and it probably seems like 10 right now considering the weather of the last few days - but don't rule anything out. With that in mind, here is a top-shelf look at how Johnston got to 209 tries. It's taken a lot of work, and a lot of help from a couple of well-known Rabbitohs to get him to this stage. 7.26pm Vote now - who will win?
