
Remarkable story of Sheffield's pioneering female engineer
Engineer, pioneer, businesswoman, pilot, mother and rumoured spy - Monica Maurice wore many hats throughout her remarkable life.For nearly four decades, she ran Wolf Safety Lamp Company in Sheffield and played a key role in making the work of thousands of miners safer with innovative equipment.Known affectionately as "The Lady of the Lamp" by the coal miners, she was the first - and for 40 years the only - female member of the Association of Mining Electrical Engineers.As a woman driving change in a heavily male-dominated industry, she earned widespread respect and had a strong reputation, her son John Jackson told the BBC.
"She was like her father, passionate about safety in mines and better working conditions," he said."She had that ability to engage with people - ordinary people, not just other engineers but the workforce."The company, which opened its headquarters in Saxon Road in 1933, produced what was considered one of the best alkaline hand lamps, widely used in mines to illuminate work areas."Previously, the flame safety lamp was the only source of light, so the electric lamp was a huge improvement which led to better safety, better output," Mr Jackson said.
Monica's career started in 1930 as secretary to her father William Maurice, before she worked as an engineer apprentice at former parent company Friemann and Wolf in Zwickau, Germany.Her extensive industry knowledge would later see her participate in a British intelligence mission in Germany, but it resulted in her being wrongly accused of espionage."My mother's task was to visit factories that she had been to on a number of occasions, which manufactured items such as batteries, electric light bulbs, miners' lamps," Mr Jackson said."The local paper got hold of the story and put out the headline 'lady industrialist from Wolf Safety spying for the country'."Rather than industrial secrets or government secrets, it was really just assessing the impact of war damage to German industry."
Away from the factory on Saxon Road in Heeley, Monica regularly indulged in her two passions: cars and aircraft - having qualified as a pilot in early 1935.An enthusiastic motorist, her son recalled how she would often race up to the airfield in Sherburn in Elmet in North Yorkshire in her Frazer Nash sports car."Down to her perceptions of safety, the first thing she did was to put a half-inch thick aluminium plate under the floor where the chains ran from the back of the engine to the rear axle just in case that chain might break," Mr Jackson said.In 1937, Monica met Arthur Newton Jackson, a Canadian doctor, who she married the following year in a red silk gauze dress, which was considered a bold choice for a wedding.The garment is now on display at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.
The couple settled in Woodhouse, in the south-eastern part of Sheffield, where they raised their three children, who had little knowledge of their mother's accomplishments."She was a very modest person, I never remember her bragging about anything," said Mr Jackson."In fact, in my younger life, I was totally unaware of all [her] achievements."Mr Jackson took over the company two years after his mother was awarded an OBE for her outstanding contributions to industrial safety, engineering, and leadership in the mining sector.
"I worked alongside her for perhaps 30 years. We very often had lunch together, just a sandwich and shared an apple and chatted about things," Mr Jackson said."I just wish I'd had a pad and written down every little anecdote that she related but like so many opportunities, you only realise that they were there and missed when it's too late."On Wednesday, a plaque commemorating her life was unveiled at the company's site."In eight years time we will have been here 100 years and I hope to be around to see it," Mr Jackson added.Listen to highlights from South Yorkshire on BBC Sounds, catch up with the latest episode of Look North.

Pictured: Mother who died with skydiving instructor after parachute ‘failed to open'
A mother of four and her skydiving instructor who were killed after their parachute failed to open have been pictured. Tandem jumpers Belinda Taylor and Adam Harrison fell 15,000ft to their deaths on Friday afternoon at Dunkeswell airfield, near Honiton, Devon. Fellow plane passengers said the pair's parachute and reserve parachute failed to open and both were pronounced dead at the scene. Tributes have poured in for Ms Taylor, 48, including from her partner, Scott Armstrong. 'I miss you so much, you were my best friend,' he posted on social media. 'Thank you for everything you [have] done for me, [from] making my children feel at home to putting up with my mess. 'I'm so lost without you. I feel so lost, I don't know where home is without you.' He told the Mirror he had bought the skydive as a present for his 'adrenaline junkie' girlfriend. Mr Armstrong added he was watching the jump with binoculars when he saw one of the jumpers did not have their parachute open. Ms Taylor was the mother of three adult boys and one teenage girl as well as grandmother to two children. Connor Bowles, her eldest son, paid tribute to her and told DevonLive: 'On Friday, June 13, our family lost our mum Belinda Taylor. 'She was a selfless woman who wanted only the best for others and especially her loved ones. She will be deeply missed and will leave an everlasting impression on all those she has met in life.' Mr Harrison had worked as a skydiving instructor since September 2020, according to his LinkedIn. He was also training as a chiropractor student. A passenger who jumped from the same plane as the victims but wished to remain anonymous, told The Telegraph: 'They were both lovely bright people you could tell that from being in the plane. 'They were full of smiles and jokes and were both obviously excited for this experience. They continued to joke and laugh the entire flight up to 15,000ft.' Another said Ms Taylor had been in high spirits before the fatal jump, and had been making small talk with other skydivers about their upcoming jump. The incident is being investigated by the British Skydiving Board of Inquiry. A spokesman from Devon & Cornwall Police said: 'The skydivers were sadly both confirmed deceased at the scene. Scene guards remain in place and inquiries are ongoing by the relevant agencies.'

Vigil held outside Indian High Commission for victims of Air India crash
Candles have been lit around a statue of Jawaharlal Nehru as members of the UK's Indian community gathered to honour the victims of the Air India plane crash. About 150 people took part in the multi-faith vigil outside the Indian High Commission in Holborn, London, on Sunday afternoon. Mourners had travelled from as far as Leicester and Bradford to pay tribute, organisers said. The statue of Nehru – India's first prime minister and a central figure in the country's independence movement – was surrounded by flowers, tealights and photographs of those killed in Thursday's crash. At least 270 people died when flight AI171 to Gatwick crashed shortly after take-off from Ahmedabad. Nilesh Solanki, 50, from the City Hindus Network and Action for Harmony, told those gathered: 'When so many lives are lost in an instant, it's hard to comprehend – and we ask the question why. 'Families, hopes, friends, people – vanished. 'Without even knowing the individuals, we felt the pain of these families. 'Coming together in this way is really important – it's a lesson for all of us to reflect.' Among the mourners were members of the Brahma Kumaris spiritual movement, dressed in white to symbolise peace and remembrance. Several mourners were brought to tears during the vigil as names of the victims were read out. Organiser Pranav Bhanot, 36, a lawyer from London, told PA news agency: 'We felt so helpless hearing about the crash. 'We wanted to do something about it. 'An air crash is always going to be quite devastating. We're only a small island nation – we had friends, parents on that flight. 'We wanted to do something special to remember and recognise them.' Authorities in India have begun handing over the remains of victims after identifying some through DNA testing, following one of the country's worst air disasters. The Boeing 787 Dreamliner crashed into a residential area in Ahmedabad shortly after take-off on Thursday. Most of the victims were severely burned, making identification difficult. Officials say 270 bodies have now been recovered, and only one passenger – a 40-year-old British man – survived.
