If the Philadelphia Phillies believe outfielder Brandon Marsh can break out of a season-long hitting slump, they certainly don't think it will happen on Monday night.

The Phillies, unsurprisingly, did not start Marsh against Chicago Cubs left-hander Matthew Boyd. Instead, utilityman Weston Wilson is starting in left, with Johan Rojas continuing to man center field.
The move isn't especially surprising, given that Marsh typically gets most of his plate appearances against right-handers. Marsh entered Monday with only four hits, one being a home run, in 22 at-bats against lefties.
However, Rob Thomson's decision to keep Marsh on the bench is nonetheless noteworthy. Managers often resort to unconventional lineup moves to get a player going, though it's clear that starting Marsh in a lefty-on-lefty matchup wasn't one the Phillies wanted to test.

The same applies to snapping losing streaks, such as the Phillies' current seven-game skid. Thomson may have more faith in Wilson, who is 5-for-33 in 18 games, to help the Phillies get back on track.

Marsh entered Monday hitting .216 with two homers, 12 RBI, and a disappointing .638 OPS in 131 plate appearances. It's unclear what his future holds, though Phillies beat writer Matt Gelb suggested the team consider demoting Marsh to Triple-A and allow him to "reset."
As of publication, Marsh remained on the Phillies' 26-man roster.
Philadelphia has lost 10 of its last 13 games and sits 4 1/2 games back of the New York Mets in the NL East.

Spencer Schwellenbach Picks up Complete-Game Win Against Brewers

Spencer Schwellenbach Picks up Complete-Game Win Against Brewers originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Atlanta Braves picked up a 6-2 win over the Milwaukee Brewers today, with Braves' pitcher Spencer Schwellenbach getting the win after pitching a complete game. The Saginaw, Mich native punched out nine batters and allowed only five hits in his first ever complete game pitched at any level. The win brings Schwellenbach's record to 5-4 for the year, with an ERA of 3.11 Advertisement It was an efficient outing for Schwellenbach, who pitched 76 strikes in 105 pitches and only gave up one home run to deliver Atlanta the victory. This win puts the Braves at 29-38 this season, and gives them a 2-1 series win over Milwaukee Ronald Acuna Jr and Michael Harris II led the way for the Braves offensively with a home run and two RBIs each, while Ozzie Albies and Drake Baldwin added RBIs of their own. Schwellenbach stayed strong throughout the game, striking out two of three batters in the final inning. His final pitch, which was grounded out by Jake Bauers, clocked in at 104 miles per hour. This was Schwellenbach's first outing since June 6, when he pitched six innings in a loss to the San Francisco Giants, striking out four batters but giving up six hits before being pulled. Advertisement Complete games for pitchers are getting increasingly rarer, as more thought is being put into protecting pitchers' arms. Schwellenbach's outing marks only the ninth time this season a player has pitched a complete game. The most recent was only a day prior, when Cincinnati Reds Pitcher Andrew Abbott went the distance in a 1-0 win against the Cleveland Guardians, in his first-ever complete game. Cowboys cap strategy must evolve to keep contending

Cowboys cap strategy must evolve to keep contending originally appeared on Athlon Sports. If you're serious about contending, it's time to start keeping up with the Joneses, so to speak. As highlighted by Blogging The Boys, Jerry Jones' Dallas Cowboys are drastically behind the league's elite in both total void-year spending and the number of high-salary players on their roster. The Eagles lead the NFL with a staggering $452 million in void-year allocations — a strategy that has allowed them to maintain one of the deepest rosters in football. Advertisement In contrast, the Cowboys rank 16th with just $44 million in future void years, most of it tied up in Dak Prescott and CeeDee Lamb. Philadelphia also has 10 players making at least $10 million annually, while Dallas has just five. The difference isn't necessarily about being "cheap''; it's about refusing to use every tool (or loophole) available to win now. The best teams in the league have figured it out. The salary cap isn't a hard ceiling; it's a strategy game. You can manipulate the cap through void years, restructures, and deferred money ... all with the understanding that the NFL dollar is ever inflating. The cap is fake today and real tomorrow ... but is not a team-building restriction. Advertisement Rather, it is simple accounting. And it's something we've been saying for years. The Cowboys have slowly shown signs of a 'changing of the guard' in how they approach cap management, but complacency or old-fashioned thinking or maybe frugality still looms to a degree. In a family-run front office, there's no pressure from ownership to push harder. ... because of course here, "the front office'' and "ownership'' are one in the same. That's exactly why fans must keep applying it. (For whatever good that does.) Micah Parsons, Tyler Smith, DaRon Bland, and George Pickens are next in line and the Cowboys could quickly shrink the "talent gap" in the NFC with those specific extensions. Advertisement Get ahead of the ever-increasing positional market that also parallels with the ever-ballooning cap. Push some money into future void years and trust the cap growth. Do it now. For years, the Cowboys have leaned on in-house superstar retention, cheap labor and compensatory picks as the foundation of their roster-building philosophy. And to a degree, it's worked — they draft well, they find value, and they stay under budget. But there's a ceiling to that approach. ... as exhibited by the fact that they win regular-season games ... and nothing more. You can't build a Super Bowl roster on rookie deals alone. At some point, you have to pay to keep your homegrown stars and you have to supplement that core with proven, high-priced talent. Advertisement Comp picks are nice — but banners aren't raised for mastering the comp pick formula. They're raised for winning in January and February. And that requires financial aggression, not financial caution. The league is evolving — and if the Cowboys truly want to stop spinning their wheels, they need to spend like contenders and exploit every modern cap tool available. Cowboys Stock Up With Five On The Rise at Minicamp

Cowboys Stock Up With Five On The Rise at Minicamp originally appeared on Athlon Sports. FRISCO - "How do they look?'' It's the No. 1 question we get after being granted access to Dallas Cowboys practices. So ... based on early work here at The Star in mandatory minicamp, let's answer the question with "Cowboys Stock Up With Five On The Rise at Minicamp'' ... while spending more time on the lesser lights than the superstars .... Advertisement Let's dive into three big winners from practice No. 1 based on the observations from several Cowboys insiders. 1 - TE Brevyn Spann-Ford - The former UDFA is definitely the No. 2 tight end ... and is getting work with the 1's. He came out of college at Minnesota with a good run-blocking reputation. He's already way more than that. Jake Ferguson - who caught a Dak Prescott TD in team work - is the top dog. But two-tight-end sets? Spann-Ford looks like your guy. 2 - QB Joe Milton - Athletic? No doubt. Accurate as a thrower? That's been the case this week, yes. This is Dak Prescott's show (and he's been good and looking healthy this week, too). But the cheap trade for the promising prospect "Bazooka Joe'' is off to a tremendous start. Advertisement 3 - LB Jack Sanborn - Our old pal Mike Zimmer had his guy in Eric Kendricks. New defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus has his in Sanborn, who is surprisingly able to drop into coverage and looks athletic doing so. ESPN notes that Marist Liufau recorded a pair of Wednesday QB pressures during indoor work at Ford Center, by the way. And ... Micah Parsons did do some on-field work on Tuesday after dealing with earlier back tightness, and when it comes to the front seven, he's obviously the top story. But he can't do it alone. Sanborn looks like a helper. 4 - CB Israel Mukuamu - Trade get Kaiir Elam has been really steady at one corner. Daron Bland has moved around, with some work in the slot. Advertisement That's freed Mukuamu to move from the slot ("Big Safety'' at an eye-popping 6-4?) to get some starting reps at outside cornerback. ... where he's gone against George Pickens ... and survived. 5 - WR Jonathan Mingo - Ah, "The Mingo Package.'' Much talked-about but rarely seen. Still, we keep thinking about the one deep ball he caught, in double-coverage, using his big frame to "out-athlete'' the defense. It's in there ... somewhere.
