FRISCO - "How do they look?''
It's the No. 1 question we get after being granted access to Dallas Cowboys practices. So ... based on early work here at The Star in mandatory minicamp, let's answer the question with "Cowboys Stock Up With Five On The Rise at Minicamp'' ... while spending more time on the lesser lights than the superstars ....

Let's dive into three big winners from practice No. 1 based on the observations from several Cowboys insiders.
1 - TE Brevyn Spann-Ford - The former UDFA is definitely the No. 2 tight end ... and is getting work with the 1's.
He came out of college at Minnesota with a good run-blocking reputation.
He's already way more than that.
Jake Ferguson - who caught a Dak Prescott TD in team work - is the top dog. But two-tight-end sets? Spann-Ford looks like your guy.
2 - QB Joe Milton - Athletic? No doubt. Accurate as a thrower? That's been the case this week, yes.
This is Dak Prescott's show (and he's been good and looking healthy this week, too). But the cheap trade for the promising prospect "Bazooka Joe'' is off to a tremendous start.

3 - LB Jack Sanborn - Our old pal Mike Zimmer had his guy in Eric Kendricks. New defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus has his in Sanborn, who is surprisingly able to drop into coverage and looks athletic doing so.
ESPN notes that Marist Liufau recorded a pair of Wednesday QB pressures during indoor work at Ford Center, by the way.
And ...
Micah Parsons did do some on-field work on Tuesday after dealing with earlier back tightness, and when it comes to the front seven, he's obviously the top story.
But he can't do it alone. Sanborn looks like a helper.
4 - CB Israel Mukuamu - Trade get Kaiir Elam has been really steady at one corner. Daron Bland has moved around, with some work in the slot.

That's freed Mukuamu to move from the slot ("Big Safety'' at an eye-popping 6-4?) to get some starting reps at outside cornerback. ... where he's gone against George Pickens ... and survived.
5 - WR Jonathan Mingo - Ah, "The Mingo Package.'' Much talked-about but rarely seen. Still, we keep thinking about the one deep ball he caught, in double-coverage, using his big frame to "out-athlete'' the defense.
It's in there ... somewhere.

DaRon Bland hopes for contract extension before Week 1

The Cowboys are not in talks with star edge rusher Micah Parsons, but they apparently are with cornerback DaRon Bland. Bland said Tuesday his representation has had "some talks" about an extension with the team. He hopes for a deal before the season. "I do, but I'm not here to talk about it really too much," Bland said, via Tommy Yarrish of the team website. "But yeah, hopefully." The Cowboys signed tight end Jake Ferguson to an extension last month, and executive vice president Stephen Jones has indicated the team has other contracts it's working on. Parsons, though, remains in a hold in and has requested a trade with the sides at a stalemate. Bland could be next. He had nine interceptions in an All-Pro season of 2023 and returned a record five for touchdowns, and now, two years later, he's close to a second contract that will set him up for life. "I was the guy that didn't have too many offers out of high school," Bland said. "I had one offer so I went to Sac State, played three years, and then went to Fresno [State] and didn't start until four games into the season. Just stuff like that. Just keep going. You'll never know when your opportunity is going to come."

Why Dak Prescott may be a mid-round fantasy steal

Yahoo Fantasy analyst Matt Harmon and Establish the Run's John Daigle explain why the Dallas signal caller is primed to be a top-10 fantasy quarterback in 2025. Hear the full conversation on the 'Yahoo Fantasy Forecast' podcast - and subscribe on Apple Podcasts, Spotify or wherever you listen. View more Video Transcript Just real quick, Dak Prescott, um, this is another situation that, man, every time I look at this Dallas Cowboys passing offense, I get more and more excited. Um, the running back room is not inspiring. The offensive line could be pretty good in the interior. I'm all in on George Pickens and C.D. Lamb. Dak Prescott, somebody you're comfortable with is a QB1 or, or, or no? Absolutely. Someone who also bakes into my plans at quarterback if I miss out on Jalen Hurts. And it's because Dak is practically the opposite of Baker Mayfield, Pizzaro Baker, and finishing a career low in touchdown rate in points per game. Remember, if we strip away 2024, back in 2023, not long ago, Dak was the QB5 in weekly points and 2nd in MVP voting behind Lamar Jackson. He was that good. And now we're giving him his 2nd best receiver. I'll argue in his career. If someone wants to put Amari Cooper at the end of his prime or rookie or Michael Gallup next to George Pickens, I'll listen, but George Pickens is getting. With at least the best quarterback of his career is going to open up everyone, C.D. Lamb included. So I'm someone who drafts C.D. Lamb over Justin Jefferson comfortably when I'm looking at wide receiver, and I also look at the range that George Pickens is going and make sure I put him at the top of that tier because I want this entire offense that Prescott included. Wait, Denzel Washington is a Cowboys fan?

On Tuesday, while promoting his new "Highest 2 Lowest" movie, Denzel Washington appeared on ESPN's First Take to share some of his opinions on the Dallas Cowboys. Unsurprisingly, he had some choice opinions about Dallas owner Jerry Jones. Because, you know, it's hard not to talk about him and his propensity to overanalyze handshakes with All-Pro pass-rushers. Jones has driven the Cowboys into the ground over the years! He deserves all the criticism he's received lately and then some. But that's not the part I'm concerned with here. No, no. Everyone has (rightful) opinions about Jones these days. Washington is just the latest to pile on. It's that Washington, a New York native, is ... a Cowboys fan? Really? How did I not know this? For a legendary, superstar actor like Washington, I feel like that's something that would be much more common knowledge. Huh. So, how did it happen? How did a New York guy like Washington "betray" the New York Giants to root for one of their biggest rivals? As always, it's not as simple as it sounds. What drew Washington to the Cowboys? According to the Dallas Morning News, Washington's childhood football team was with the Boys Club in Mount Vernon, New York. Their nickname was the Red Raiders, and this made him want to go and play for the Texas Tech Red Raiders in college football. This eventually made him gravitate toward following Texas Longhorns football, and that, of course, transitioned to an emotional investment in the Cowboys. The fact that his fandom started as a kid off of something so innocent makes a lot of sense. Does Washington root for other New York teams? Yes, from a baseball perspective, he grew up rooting for the New York Yankees. He said as much in a visit to the Los Angeles Dodgers, where he told a story about sneaking into Yankee Stadium. He's apparently a huge baseball guy through and through, which is cool. From a basketball perspective, I'm sorry, Knicks fans, he doesn't love your team. (In all fairness, they haven't really been worth the trouble until recently.) Washington actually roots for the Los Angeles Lakers. He has season tickets and has been known to hang around the team from time to time over the years, like in this 2018 visit. OK, so he roots for the Cowboys, Yankees, and Lakers ... does that also mean he roots for Duke? Ha. Original! But in all seriousness, there isn't anything clear or public to suggest Washington actively follows the Blue Devils' men's basketball program. Phew. So, in this specific case, he does get to maintain some semblance of credibility from a surface level as a sports fan.
