Weekend at Bernie's: 70yo trainer set to steal show in The Quokka
If you had told Bernie Miller a few months ago that he'd have a runner in a $5 million race, he'd have said you were an idiot. But on Saturday, the 70-year-old larrikin trainer can provide the fairytale story of The Quokka.
Some trainers might party for a week if they won a $5m race, but not 70-year-old larrikin Bernie Miller.
Miller, who worked for an electrical company fixing power lines for more than two decades, might be a colourful character but he knows the value of hard work.
He can provide the fairytale story of Saturday's $5m The Quokka at Ascot but says even if Jokers Grin scores the rich slot race, there will be work to be done at his small stable an hour from Perth.
'If you told me last year that I would have a horse in a $5m race, I would have said you were an idiot,' Miller told Racenet.
'I'm quite dedicated with everything I do with my horses.
'After the race on Saturday I've got to drive the truck back to my stables and Perth drivers are the worst in the world.
'I would rather get home, get my horse safe and do the things I need to do for the other horses who are just as important.
'I won't finish until after 9pm that night.
'I might have a sneaky light beer, but that will be it.'

Miller first started training in the early 1980s but has never been a big-time player.
His main source of income for 23 years was working as a linesman for an electrical company.
'We used to work on the power lines when they were live, so we used to have a lot of accidents,' Miller chuckled.
'Basically, I was just a young kid who loved horses.
'We were lucky that I had a family friend who had some good trotters.
'As a young bloke, I couldn't wait until I was 16 so I could go to the trots.
'One fella knew I loved the horses and got me an ex-racehorse that was retired and my love of thoroughbreds started from there.'
• 'Gone to another level': Quokka first before Everest shot
Miller, who returned to training in 2007, purchased the mother of Jokers Grin as a weanling and that was the origin of the remarkable tale of the unexpected Quokka contender.
The four-year-old gelding has won six from nine and could be the giant killer in The Quokka, looking to take down the likes of two-time winner Overpass and other high calibre eastern states contenders such as Headwall and Front Page.
Miller says he currently has five horses in work, up from the solitary horse he trained when he returned to training in 2007.
But he says his horse numbers fluctuate.
One thing he feels sure of is that Jokers Grin, an $11 chance, will make his presence felt in the $5m slot race on Saturday.
Thrilling finish to the Group 3 PKF Roma Cup over 1100m at Ascot with the judges unable to split The Boss Lady and Jokers Grin before stewards ultimately upheld a protest in The Boss Lady's favour.

'This week I'm training five horses, but next week Jokers Grin will have a spell so I will be down to four,' Miller said.
'The week after that, I don't know.
'I'm very confident that my horse will be extremely competitive.
'His work last Saturday was a personal best.
'I can't get him any better at this stage of his life to complete against the best sprinters.
'Patty Carbery is one of the kindest and nicest jockeys going around and he is like family to me, it would mean a lot to both of us if we could win.'
"We are actually the best mates, 100%."

— Ladbrokes Australia (@ladbrokescomau) April 20, 2025
Jokers Grin will race in the Ladbrokes slot.
A spokesman said: 'We are proud to be supporting a local horse in their richest race this year.
'We believe Jokers Grin can go on to bigger and better things and we are backing in Bernie Miller and Patrick Carbery to get him there.'

Gelded Italian import Tempesti to continue improvement for Matt Cumani at Sandown on Saturday
Apollo Creed wasn't the only one to have trouble with an Italian Stallion. Like the Rocky movie combatant, Ballarat trainer Matt Cumani found his Italian Stallion difficult to handle. Apollo Creed lost his heavyweight title in Rocky II. Tempesti lost his stallion status after Cumani had him gelded a few weeks after the Italian Derby runner-up started work in Australia. • PUNT LIKE A PRO: Become a Racenet iQ member and get expert tips – with fully transparent return on investment statistics – from Racenet's team of professional punters at our Pro Tips section. SUBSCRIBE NOW! 'In Italy, they told me he was a very straightforward and very well behaved horse but Australia is very different with all the stables being open-aired and all the horses passing in front of them,' Cumani said. 'We sort of sold him as the Italian Stallion and he very much lived up to that name and he got very overexcited on the track, on the barn and everywhere to the extent where he was almost too dangerous. 'We hadn't even got to jumpouts and racing yet, so we hadn't even experienced tie-ups, the clerks of the course or anything like that. 'After about four weeks of training and giving him a good go as a colt, we decided we had to geld him.' The new version of Tempesti has impressed Cumani with his attitude in his two jumpouts and two races in his care. Tempesti was an easy winner at Group 2 level on a heavy track in Italy in 2023. Tempesti finished in the second half of the field at his Australian debut at Flemington in March but indicated his promise when running on well for third over 1800m at Sandown last month. Cumani said spacing Tempesti's runs was crucial to the six-year-old performing at his best, which meant bypassing a 2000m race at Flemington last Saturday to tackle Saturday's 1800m contest at Sandown. 'I actually thought his first run here in Australia was quite good, even if it didn't look visually impressive,' Cumani said. 'But if you look at the times, his finish was actually pretty good in a decent race. 'The only thing is that I would have loved to have stepped him up to 2000m in his next race but he's a horse that seems to thrive off not much racing. 'I didn't want to go two weeks into his next run, which was the 2000m at Flemington last weekend. 'But given he ran so well over 18 (00m), I was happy to give him another go at it' Cumani said he would like Tempesti to race 'a pair or two closer' to the lead from barrier six at Sandown. He added Tempesti could be competitive in minor stakes races over 2000m in the spring provided the Italian Group 2 winner gets conditions to suit. Tempesti is unbeaten in six starts on heavy ground in his homeland.

Shayne O'Cass' tips, race-by-race analysis for 2025 Winter Cup Day at Rosehill Gardens
Form expert Shayne O'Cass analyses Saturday's 10-race card at Rosehill Gardens on Saturday, presenting his race-by-race tips and analysis. • PUNT LIKE A PRO: Become a Racenet iQ member and get expert tips – with fully transparent return on investment statistics – from Racenet's team of professional punters at our Pro Tips section. SUBSCRIBE NOW! â– â– â– â– â– Reckoning on the blinkers will be a big help to ARISTOCRAT (9). His two runs have been infinitely better than they read on paper and they actually don't read too bad as it is given the performance and potential and those around him like Agarwood and Providence, not to mentioned Regulated Affair. The Kermadec son, STATE OPERA (13), was $151 into $34 at one point on debut and ran more like a $34 shot than a $151 pop. He was coming again on the line in that midweeker at Warwick Farm. At home this time. Bet: Aristocrat to win, State Opera each-way â– â– â– â– â– RED RAG TO BULLS (18) has done more good than bad in nine starts (eight if you scrub the Failed to Finish at Scone first-up). Beat a subsequent winner, easily, 11 days ago. In a good place. SUPER NORWEST (6) is a Highway veteran. His record in the Highways is 10 goes; one win, three seconds and a third. This is not the hardest one he's run in either. Last week's Highway winning trainer Luke Pepper has HELL OF A FOX (5) aiming for four on the bounce. â– â– â– â– â– RACE 3: MIDWAY HANDICAP 1200m SILENTSAR (2) has some very deep form dating all the way back to his two-year-old days. He was second to Koshu at start two, fifth to Osipneko and Madam Pommery after that. First-up numbers read well as do his numbers at the track and the trip. Trialled well alongside World Alliance the other day. THE EXTREME CAT (4) was '00' in two runs in March and April but there were the Provincial Qualifier Heat and Wildcard. Still was pretty awful to be honest but the trial on May 7 was anything but. This looks well within the capabilities of EVERYONE'S A STAR (9). Bet: Silentsar to win â– â– â– â– â– CARRAZANA (9) looked like he could turn out to be another good horse for Waller, Morgan and Devine after his first two runs. There looks like there have been a few behind the scenes issues with this classically-bred now four-year-old gelding. Given where he is at in terms of absenteeism from racing, the market will say yeah or nay. Ditto that last bit for PRETTY POWERFUL (10). Form's there for all to see, but how about this breeding buffs; her dam threw 10 foals, all of them raced, all of them won and half of them won stakes races. Bet: Carrazana to place â– â– â– â– â– CODETTA (2) is a very valuable horse given she is a Nicconi half-sister to Riff Rocket. This Debbie Kepitis-owned three-year-old has run eight times for Michael Freedman, winning three and finishing runner-up three. She was $8.50 into $5.50 first-up and only needed another 50 or 100m and she beats King's Secret (who runs here also). USEAPIN (13) has raced three times first-up. One of them was a win and the other two were actually very good runs behind More Territories and then Aleiana. Bet: Codetta to win, Usapin each-way â– â– â– â– â– AGITA (13), I've said it before and say it every time, shaped as a Derby horse early on for AJC Derby-winning trainer David Payne but for one (good) reason or another, never got the opportunity. Here is now, first-up, at home over 1500m with 54.5kg. There's four good reasons why he can and there is no good reason why he can't. The $8 the place looks good value. CHICA MOJITO (2) has won one from 18 but the fact that she has placed eight times makes her $3.10 place price somewhat appealing. Bet: Agita each-way, Chica Mojota to place â– â– â– â– â– RACE 7: CAPTIVANT @ KIA ORA HANDICAP 1300m TESTATOR SILENS (1) has finished sixth in both runs this preparation and in quite solid company (Dragonstone, In Flight, Storm The Ramparts, etc). His last 150m in both were eye-catching to put it mildly. Loves Rosehill. SNACK BAR (11) has raced at Rosehill three times for a third to Autumn Glow, third to Lady Shenandoah and fifth in the Tapp-Craig. Drawn to get every chance. UNSTOPABULL (7) is close to a peak. HIGH BLUE SEA (4) trialled well. Bet: Testator Silens each-way, quinella 1, 11, box trifecta 1, 4, 7, 11 â– â– â– â– â– Context time. I was a bit keen on MORMONA (9) in the Lord Mayors Cup here two weeks ago. The grey was rock solid at $41 and ended up running seventh of 14 beaten six lengths, keeping in mind that Touristic won by two lengths. This grey from France is a quality stayer and is crying out for 2400m (and more). Clearly TOURISTIC (3) is easy to like and hard to knock. Respect market on CHANGINGOFTHEGUARD (1). Bet: Mormona each-way, Daily Double 1st Leg 9, 2nd Leg 13 â– â– â– â– â– RACE 9: TAB HANDICAP 2000m KIND WORDS (10) has been the 'next time' horse in, and after, every one of her six runs this time in but just hasn't converted yet. To be fair to the mare, she went close at Scone on Dark Jewel Day and barriers have played their part too. Very fit and maybe 2000m does the trick. Sounds odd to say a 13th of 14 was 'good', okay maybe not 'good' but the run of LENAPE VIBE (15) here a fortnight ago was passable given that was 1500m and this is 2000m which is more her go. Bet: Kind Words, Lenape Vibe each-way â– â– â– â– â– MISS JENNIFER (13) is a big time blue blood. Her fourth dam is Toltrice who was a champion on the track and a broodmare gem in the breeding shed. As for Miss Jennifer herself, she is one of those horses that is very much reliant on outside factors given her slow early/fast late pattern but it when the stars align - boom. Ditto all that for TOTOKA (12) only double. Don't know if she'll be winning but I bet she'll challenge for the fastest last 400m on the whole card.

2025 Stradbroke Handicap: War Machine unders, owner says
Don't miss out on the headlines from Horse Racing. Followed categories will be added to My News. Prominent owner Rupert Legh says his Stradbroke Handicap favourite War Machine is silly odds in the betting market and he couldn't possibly back him in the famous Queensland Group 1 on Saturday. Legh knows he has a talented and progressive horse on his hands but can't believe bookmakers have the Lindsay Park galloper the raging $2.70 favourite with a huge gap to anything else in the Stradbroke market. While War Machine was dominant in winning the Group 3 BRC Sprint, Legh said he was unproven at Group 1 level and was far from the finished product. He questioned whether War Machine's stranglehold on Stradbroke betting spoke more to the quality of the field in the $3m race. It doesn't shape as a vintage Stradbroke. • PUNT LIKE A PRO: Become a Racenet iQ member and get expert tips – with fully transparent return on investment statistics – from Racenet's team of professional punters at our Pro Tips section. SUBSCRIBE NOW! 'I won't be backing him, I think he's 'unders',' Legh told Racenet. 'Is that a true price? 'I think it must be a reflection of the actual quality of the race. 'Given another three or four starts with some more experience, he will get better and better this horse. 'But is still unproven in this sort of class.' • Stradbroke Handicap field and news In War Machine's only previous Group 1 attempt, he finished 11th when being beaten almost eight lengths by fellow Stradbroke contender Kimochi in last November's Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes at Caulfield. War Machine races in Legh's striking colours and the owner is aiming to score his fourth Stradbroke. He has previously claimed Stradbroke glory with Tofane (2021), Santa Ana Lane (2018) and Mr Baritone (2008). Legh has never been on track at Eagle Farm to witness any of his Stradbroke wins and he said maybe it was a good luck omen that he would not be there again, instead heading to England for the famous Royal Ascot carnival. Lindsay Park is searching for its first Stradbroke but it should not be forgotten that the Hayes boys – Ben, JD and Will – got to train War Machine after legendary trainer Mike Moroney's sad passing earlier this year. • 'Pressure is your friend': Cejay's tip to conjure Stradbroke fairytale It would be an emotional moment if War Machine won and Legh said his great mate Moroney always thought he had a special horse in the making. 'We got War Machine out of New Zealand and Mike gave me a call one day and said 'I think I have got the right horse for us',' Legh recalled. 'He had a big opinion of him, he really liked the horse. 'He is a horse who used to over-race a bit and the reality is, he is still learning his craft. 'Mike thought he was a horse who could one day stand up and run in a big race, but could he get to a Group 1? 'No owner or trainer knows until you go through the grades and start racing against better horses, which is what he is doing. 'He couldn't have done any more than what he did last start, it was a pretty dominant sort of win. 'You would like to think there's more to come and he will only get better. 'But this is a big Group 1 – it's a Stradbroke.' War Machine was elevated to Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap favouritism after his dominant win in the BRC Sprint. Picture: Grant Peters / Trackside Photography • Grafterburners primed for JJ Atkins decider against Cool Archie War Machine has won five of his 12 starts and rocketed into Stradbroke favouritism when destroying the Group 3 BRC Sprint field in a blistering two-and-a-half length win. War Machine carried 56.5kg in the BRC Sprint and now drops to 53kg in the Stradbroke with Tim Clark to ride. The four-year-old gelding, a son of Harry Angel, drew barrier 13 at Tuesday's night's barrier draw function. 'I don't actually mind barrier 13, it gives Tim Clark more options,' co-trainer Ben Hayes said. 'There will be a lot of horses crossing from out wide, so he should be able to get into that three-wide line and get a nice run in transit.'
