Grand Slam Track changes schedule for Philadelphia event
Changes are coming to the Grand Slam Track event in Philadelphia.
Founder and commissioner Michael Johnson announced on Thursday that the original three-day schedule for the professional track league event will be condensed to two days of competition.
The Philadelphia Slam will now begin on Saturday, May 31 and wrap up on Sunday, June 1 at Franklin Field.
"Coming off an amazing sold-out Miami Slam, we've taken time to celebrate the successes we've achieved in our inaugural season, but also have looked for ways to improve Grand Slam Track in real time," Johnson said in a release.
"We've said all along we want to listen to our fans, athletes, and coaches, and having heard feedback from various key stakeholders, we've made the decision to condense our schedule in Philadelphia into two, high-octane, and intense days of combat racing. We want to be the most flexible, adaptive, and fan-first league in sports, and we believe making these changes will improve the Grand Slam Track experience for all."
The move to a two-day event results in a significant change to the long distance category. The three-day competition window had allowed for a day of rest for the athletes between their 3,000-metre and 5,000m events, but now they will compete in a single 3,000m race in Philadelphia.
That change also comes with an altered prize pool for long distance athletes, with winners taking home $50,000 US instead of the $100,000 previously up for grabs.
The final stop of the Grand Slam Track season is in Los Angeles from June 27-29.

At the time, he was on parole for another previous sexual misconduct conviction. His counsel claimed that Dueck was 'mentally handicapped' and was a failure of the system. In 2022, he was denied parole for a previous conviction, but was released without notice to Kelowna residents after servicing his sentence in 2023. He'd also previously been the subject of public police warnings in 2020 when he was released in the Fraser Valley after serving time for sex crimes. RCMP team up to take down 187 km/h motorcyclist A man in Kelowna was arrested in a dramatic takedown and had his motorcycle impounded after being spotted driving at 187 km/h on Highway 97C near Merritt on Friday. Three injured in massive gas station fire near Chilliwack A massive fire broke out at a Shell gas station off of Highway 1 near Bridal Falls Road on Saturday, leaving three people injured. Online video showed a camper completely engulfed in flames under the station's awning, with black smoke billowing into the sky. After a call at 11:58 a.m. about the fire, emergency services responded with three primary care paramedics, once advanced care paramedic, one responder unit and a supervisor, as well as a critical care helicopter. Paramedics transported one patient by helicopter to hospital in critical condition and two patients via ground, both in stable condition. Mackenzie Hughes in the hunt heading into final round at Canadian Open
CALEDON, Ont. — Mackenzie Hughes has dreamed of this moment. In fact, he's already been in this moment. This time, he has to believe, will be different. Article content For the second straight year, the Dundas, Ont. native heads to Sunday at the RBC Canadian Open with a chance to win his national Open. Article content Article content 'I've dreamt from a young age about doing something like this,' Hughes said after shooting a Saturday 64 to head into the final round at 12-under par, two shots back of the lead. 'I was standard-bearer back at Hamilton in '03 and volunteered at a young age and thought, 'Wow, this is really cool.' Now that I get to actually do it, I tell myself, 'Hey, you've got to lean into this. You've got to embrace it and enjoy it.'' Whether it was the weight of the moment, the thought of accomplishment, or simply golf, he couldn't get it across the finish line, shooting a gut-wrenching 70 in the final round. Article content 'It was easy to kind of look forward and imagine what it would be like to win tournaments 10 minutes from my house and win the Canadian Open,' he recalled. 'It was difficult not to have that in your mind. I think it affected me.' Article content 'I think the hardest thing is to not want it too much, which is hard to turn off. Here I have that going for me, and I think it's important to try and use it.' We've seen it this week,' Hadwin said. 'I think at this point it's going to come down to whether I can get hot with the putter tomorrow.'
