Hi, and welcome to another edition of Prep Rally. My name is Eric Sondheimer. March is over on Tuesday. Welcome to April. Let's remember March Madness.
From Brayen Burries' greatness in Sacramento to Corona High's baseball team recording nine shutouts in 11 games after winning the Boras Classic South last week, March is ending with lots of terrific high school sports memories.
Eleven games into the baseball season, Corona has been even better than expected, and the expectations are extremely high. From fielding to pitching to hitting home runs, the Panthers are delivering every game. Here's a look at how they have been so good so far.
Burries, the senior basketball standout at Eastvale Roosevelt, will be in New York this week to play in Tuesday's McDonald's All-American game. He still hasn't announced a college choice, but his McDonald's All-American teammate, Alijah Arenas of Chatsworth, is probably going to try to help recruit him to USC. What Burries did in the state championship game — score 44 points at Golden 1 Center — will go down as one of the greatest performances in finals history.
Former Corona Centennial guard Donovan Dent, the 2022 Times player of the year, announced he was transferring from New Mexico to UCLA. He'll get to play his final season in front of family and friends.
Etiwanda's Grace Knox and Aliyahna Morris are in New York for the McDonald's All-American girls basketball game after leading their team to the state Open Division championship.

Brandon Thomas of Mater Dei enters the start of Trinity League play this week playing as well as anyone in the Southland. On the mound, he hasn't give up any runs in 20 innings with 24 strikeouts and three walks. He's also batting .371.
At least four starting pitchers have not given up a run this season — Thomas, Otto Graham of JSerra, Jackson Eisenhauer of Crespi and Seth Hernandez of Corona.
Bishop Montgomery and Redondo Union are less than two miles apart and played in a nonleague game. Bishop Montgomery won 7-2 behind 14 strikeouts from Pierson Howe.
Sophomore catcher Dezi Delgado of Sierra Canyon is batting .490 with nine doubles and 15 RBIs.
Eisenhauer has thrown 30 consecutive scoreless innings.
Birmingham freshman pitcher Carlos Acuna continues to impress. He threw eight scoreless innings in a game against Paloma Valley.
Yucaipa is showing signs of being one of the best teams in the Inland Empire with an 11-2 record and 4-0 mark in the Citrus Belt League. The Thunderbirds have quality wins over Vista Murrieta and Foothill.

It didn't have to be. Brody Thompson could have stayed at Sherman Oaks Notre Dame, where he was the starting catcher last season. Then his father, Randy, an assistant coach for the Knights, decided to accept the job as athletic director and coach at Bishop Alemany, where he had been for years before.
His family had no intention of moving. It was too expensive to change residences, so if Brody decided to join his father, chances were the Southern Section would make him sit out half his junior season under transfer rules
'He was doing well at Notre Dame,' Randy said. 'He wanted to play for his father. It was his decision.'
The family appealed to the Southern Section. This wasn't an athletically motivated transfer, something the rules are designed to prevent. Even Notre Dame coach Tom Dill wrote a letter in support of the transfer.
His appeal was rejected. He has sat and sat and finally becomes eligible this week. He'll make his season debut on Tuesday against Notre Dame. Here's the story on the challenge he has faced.
Payton Kennedy turned 18 on Friday, an event every teenager cherishes, but for her it also happened to be a game day, meaning any celebration had to be put on hold until victory was won.
'I walked into the team room and there was Starbucks in my cubby, gifts, and they sang me happy birthday,' the Santa Margarita senior said. 'I love my teammates so much.'
The best present of all was one she gave herself by pitching four innings and adding two hits and two RBIs in host Santa Margarita's 5-2 triumph over Mater Dei in its Trinity League softball opener.
Rated one of the best pitchers and hitters in Orange County, Kennedy has the numbers to back the hype. Through Friday she was 4-0 in the circle with 30 innings pitched to go with 16 hits, 19 RBIs, six home runs, a .457 batting average, a 1.000 slugging percentage and a 1.512 on-base-plus-slugging percentage.

Brandon Arrington, a junior at Mount Miguel in San Diego, is the defending state champion in the 100 and only getting faster. He ran 10.24 in the 100 meters and 20.37 in the 200 this past week. As long as he stays healthy, lots of state records could be in jeopardy.

Apathy and anger cloud USA team a year out from World Cup
Former USA goalkeeper Kasey Keller says he was embarassed by the USA's 4-0 loss to Switzerland. (Victor Decolongon) A run of four straight losses, including a 4-0 hammering from Switzerland on Wednesday, has left Mauricio Pochettino and his USA team feeling the wrath of critics a year out from the World Cup they will co-host. The USA head into their opening game of the CONCACAF Gold Cup against Trinidad and Tobago on Sunday having lost on home soil to Panama and Canada in the Nations League in March before friendly losses to Turkey and the debacle against the Swiss. Advertisement "I think it is the most embarrassed I have been for the US national team in a long time," said Kasey Keller, who played in goal for the USA 102 times between 1990 and 2007. While there were plenty of American fans venting similar feelings on social media after the loss, what will perhaps be more concerning for the US Soccer Federation is supporters voting with their feet and not attending games. There were thousands of empty seats in Nashville for the Switzerland defeat after poor turn-outs for March's games in Los Angeles. "There's just a sense of apathy around the United States men's program and I don't think that's a hot take," former striker Taylor Twellman told NBC Sports. Advertisement Alexi Lalas, a star of the USA team the last time they hosted a World Cup in 1994, has built a career in 'hot takes' for Fox Sports but even he was struggling to fire himself up for a Star Spangled rant after the latest disappointment. "I'm having a hard time even conjuring up that and that makes a little sad. In the past when I was angry at what was going on, I felt compelled to express it and now they are not even worth that, not worth me expressing how disappointing this is right now," he said on his podcast 'State of the Union'. Pochettino has been forced to field a largely second string squad in this month's games with the likes of Tim Weah and Weston McKennie on Club World Cup duty with Juventus while captain and talisman Christian Pulisic has opted to take some rest along with some other members of the first choice squad. That latter decision prompted fierce criticism from some ex-players, including Landon Donovan, the country's all-time joint top scorer who during commentary of Portugal's win in the UEFA Nations League hit out at the absentees. Hurt himself in the process, and I can't help but think about some of our guys on vacation, not wanting to play in the Gold Cup. It's pissing me off," he said. That led to a sarcastic reply on social media from Pulisic's father Mark who posted a reminder of Donovan's own 'sabbatical' from the USA team. - Pressure - But there is also pressure mounting on Pochettino, the Argentine former Tottenham Hotspur manager, who was appointed to the USA role in September. Advertisement The coach said he would take the blame for the showing against Switzerland where the USA were 4-0 down by half-time. "It's my responsibility the choice of the starting 11. I wanted to give minutes to certain players, but we were never in the game," the Argentine said. While Pochettino's job may be safe, some are wondering if he might not need some assistance. "It looks like he doesn't know the team, it looks like he doesn't scout the players, has no idea of the pieces he has at his disposal," said former USA forward Hercules Gomez on You Tube. "The US Soccer Federation, why not place somebody who has some experience with the player pool to help Pochettino out because it looks like he has no idea who his players are? ICE and Border Patrol will be at the Club World Cup in Miami. Is that normal?
A series of social media posts by U.S. Customs and Border Protection have spooked fans ahead of Inter Miami's match against Egypt's Al Ahly at the Hard Rock Stadium as part of FIFA's Club World Cup this Saturday. Since at least April, Customs and Border Protection (CBP) has been promoting its involvement in security measures for the tournament on social media and vowing to work with local, state, and federal partners to 'secure the games around the U.S.' One post read, 'Together, CBP Office of Field Operations, CBP Air and Marine Operations and U.S. Border Patrol have a strong presence so you can focus on the game.' Another—since deleted—claimed officers would be 'suited and booted, ready to provide security for the first round of games.' Given the intensity of the Trump administration's crackdown on immigrants, 's participation has caused consternation and fear that the event could be unsafe for immigrants. NBC News also reported that Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) sent a statement saying it would also be part of the tournament's security team, and advised that 'all non-American citizens need to carry proof of their legal status.' Miami-Dade Sheriff Rosie Cordero-Stutz tried to quell fears, stating that her office would lead stadium security, emphasizing that immigration enforcement is not a priority during the event. 'We are in charge of security at the stadium for the Club World Cup,' Cordero-Stutz said to CBS. 'While we're working with our state and local partners, that is not our priority that day.' A sheriff's office spokesperson said that they are working in collaboration with Hard Rock Stadium security. However, it is unclear in what capacity CBP and ICE are collaborating. CBP at major events The involvement of CBP in major sporting events is not uncommon. In February, they were touting their participation in security for this year's super bowl between the Philadelphia Eagles and Kansas City Chief in New Orleans. A press release said that 100 Border Patrol agents, CBP officers, Air and Marine Operations agents had been involved in security measures leading up to and during the big game. The scope of their work is described as patrolling the Mississippi River, X-ray examinations of food, drink and merchandise trucks that entered the venue area, air sorties as well as deploying several units to support local, state and federal law enforcement. They have a similar press release about their participation in security for Super Bowl LIV in 2020, which took place at the Hard Rock Stadium. Juan Perez, a former Miami-Dade police director, said concerts and games large enough to merit a special federal security designation — like a Super Bowl— will see federal law enforcement officers deployed around a stadium. 'It's not unusual for ICE to work major sporting events,' he said. 'It's not unusual to bring in agents to help.' The Miami Herald requested clarification from both CBP and ICE regarding the scope of their involvement in the tournament. A CBP spokesperson suggested that public concerns stemmed from a 'misunderstanding,' but declined to elaborate. A formal statement, originally promised, has not yet been released. When the Herald asked ICE to clarify what it meant by advising that 'all non-American citizens need to carry proof of their legal status' as part of security measures, an ICE spokesperson responded in a statement: 'As is customary for an event of this magnitude with national security implications, ICE will be working alongside our Department of Homeland Security and Department of Justice partners to help ensure the safety and security of the event.' Not another Copa The Club World Cup is considered a dress rehearsal for Miami's participation in next year's FIFA World Cup and a chance to show that Miami has the security infrastructure to host a big event safely. The chaotic scenes at last year's Copa América final at Hard Rock Stadium have only heightened concerns around security for the Club World Cup. During the July 2024 the tournament final's between Argentina and Colombia, thousands of fans overwhelmed stadium entry points—jumping over barricades, bypassing security checks, and clashing with police. The chaos endangered the safety of spectators, players, and referees, ultimately forcing officials to delay the game 80 minutes. According to reports at the time, 55 people were ejected from the venue and 27 were arrested. Nearly 800 police officers were there, which is quadruple what they deploy for Dolphins games and close to Super Bowl numbers, reported the Miami Herald at the time. However, Saturday's match may not draw the same crowds as last year's Copa América final. According to Sports Illustrated, FIFA was forced to slash ticket prices for the opening fixture of the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup due to sluggish sales. After the tournament draw in December, the cheapest seats were priced at $349. That figure dropped to $230 the following month, then to around $110—and as of early June, tickets have fallen to as low as $55 for fans hoping to see Inter Miami face Egypt's Al-Ahly on Saturday, June 14. Hostile environment While the presence of federal agents at major sporting events like the Super Bowl is not unusual, the political climate has dramatically shifted. For many immigrant advocates, CBP's tone and visibility suggest something more than routine security measures. Thomas Kennedy, an immigration advocate with the Florida Immigrant Coalition, said the rhetoric is troubling. Although checking legal status for every attendee would be logistically difficult, he said, the mere suggestion that non-citizens should carry proof of legal status could be enough to deter participation. 'Detentions have clearly increased, and there's such a hostile immigration enforcement environment right now,' Kennedy said. 'It's not just Miami—international fans with valid visas could feel intimidated. There are real financial and emotional consequences.' He added: 'I'd be worried and disturbed if I were going to the games,' Kennedy said. 'If I didn't have status, I would probably stay away altogether.' FIFA President Gianni Infantino, who oversaw the 2022 tournament in Qatar, said they are prepared to create a safe environment at the matches. 'The most important thing for us is to guarantee security for fans who come to the games,' he said. 'Nobody should think they can come to a game and create problems. We want everyone to have a good time.' At a press event Wednesday at the Pérez Art Museum, marking the one-year countdown to the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will include seven matches in Miami, Mayor Daniella Levine Cava was asked whether fears of immigration enforcement might deter fans from attending. 'I'm not the sheriff, I'm not a police officer, and I'm focusing on how the games are going to continue for the protection of everyone,' she told the Herald.
