CM Himanta Biswa Sarma, taking to X, paid his tribute to the freedom fighter. "Today, on his punyatithi, we remember Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi, Assam's first Chief Minister and a towering figure of our state, whose unwavering dedication to our land and its people continues to inspire generations. His role in opposing the Cabinet Mission's Grouping Plan which threatened to merge Assam with Bengal, potentially leading to our state's inclusion in East Pakistan, led to safeguarding our sovereignty and integrating us firmly into independent India.
As we mark the day as Lok Kalyan Diwas, I urge everyone to follow the ideals set by the Bharat Ratna and serve the people of Assam with utmost dedication," he wrote.
In Guwahati, to uphold his legacy, state govt presented the Loksewa and Karmashree awards to 69 state govt employees, who had diligently committed to their role in the realm of public service, at Srimanta Sankaradeva Kalakshetra.
In other districts across the state, the freedom fighter's legacy was celebrated by organising floral tributes, cultural events, and public meetings.
Meanwhile, a humble tribute was also offered at Raj Bhawan, by the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee. Sharing a post on X, the party said, "Remembering Gopinath Bordoloi on his 75th death anniversary, a towering freedom fighter and Assam's first Chief Minister. His unwavering love for India, Assam, and the Assamese people will forever inspire us, he continues to live on in our hearts."
It must be noted that, as an ode to his legacy, the book originally titled Bordoloi Smriti Granth, first published in Hindi in 1952 by Akela Publications, has now been released in Assamese. This rare work serves as a significant tribute to him.

CM to vigilantes: Protest encroachments lawfully
Guwahati: Amid rising vigilante activity in upper Assam, chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday urged citizens to continue protesting against encroachers but by staying within the bounds of law and avoiding taking law into their own hands. Responding to recent calls by student and regional youth organisations asking Bangladesh-origin Muslims to leave districts such as Sivasagar, Lakhimpur, Tinsukia, and Jorhat, Sarma said, "Nobody should take the law into their hands but protest and agitate against these issues." He emphasized that the government supports peaceful protests against illegal encroachments, warning that "the situation will turn worse if anyone attempts to harm the Assamese community." Referring to incidents during the recent eviction drive in Uriamghat (Golaghat district), Sarma said, "What was witnessed in the recent eviction drive at Uriamghat was shocking, and I am going to show some more videos in a few days, which is even more alarming." He alleged that encroachers had "illegally occupied thousands of bighas of land and converted it into fisheries." Highlighting the cultural significance of affected districts, Sarma said, "Lakhimpur, Jorhat and Sivasagar are historically significant places of the state, and if we do not raise our voice against such encroachments, then who will?"

Nijut Moina 2.0 to cover 4L girls, aims to end child marriage by 2026
Guwahati: Nijut Moina 2.0, the second edition of the ambitious scheme of the Assam govt to check child marriage by providing universal free admission to girl students from higher secondary to PG-level, will cover about four lakh girl students this year, more than double from last year's 1.6 lakh beneficiaries. CM Himanta Biswa Sarma distributed admission forms at Gauhati University on Wednesday to formally launch the initiative. He said irrespective of religion and caste, the Assam govt is committed to bringing down child marriage to zero by 2026 by facilitating the study of girls up to higher classes. "We have renewed our tirade against child marriage. With the launch of Nijut Moina 2.0, four lakh girl students will save themselves from its scourge while fulfilling their academic dreams," Sarma said. Under the scheme, monthly financial assistance will be transferred to students' bank accounts via direct benefit transfer (DBT) -- Rs 1,000 for HS students, Rs 1,250 for undergraduate students, and Rs 2,500 for postgraduates. The 2025-26 edition will cover HS, UG, PG, and BEd students. Eligibility is open to all unmarried girl students domiciled in Assam, regardless of economic background. However, married girls are excluded — except those pursuing PG and BEd studies. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Back Pain Treatments That Might Surprise You! To expand its reach, Nijut Moina 2.0 now includes central universities such as Tezpur University and Assam University, alongside provincialised colleges and self-financing courses. The Nijut Moina scheme will play a major role in enabling these girls to continue their studies, thus preventing child marriages, he asserted. "We have a society where even a 14-year-old has to live with the tag of someone's third wife. These girls are first stopped from attending school, then forced into marriage and pressured to bear children," Sarma added. He noted the contrasting pictures in the state — while in some areas 22-year-old girls are mothers of four children, others of the same age at institutions like Cotton University in Guwahati are seen pursuing PG degrees. Sarma explained that Nijut Moina 2.0 will cover girl students of the first and second years of HS, the first and second years of UG, and the first and second years of PG. "In the next year, the final year students of UG will be brought under the ambit, thereby ensuring 100 per cent coverage of girl students under the scheme. Subsequently, Nijut Moina will cover 10 lakh girl students," the chief minister added.

Arms licence portal for indigenous citizens in sensitive areas soon: CM
Guwahati: Assam govt is preparing to launch a dedicated online portal that will allow original inhabitants and indigenous Indian citizens of the state residing in sensitive areas to apply for arms licences, chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on Wednesday. In a post on X, Sarma said the initiative is aimed at addressing security concerns among indigenous communities living in vulnerable regions "who perceive a threat to their lives". According to the guidelines shared by the CM, applicants must be "original inhabitants or Indigenous Indian citizens of Assam" who "perceive a genuine threat to life and safety due to the vulnerability of the area of residence". Eligibility also extends to those residing in vulnerable or remote areas as notified by the district administration or assessed as such by authorized security agencies. The process for granting arms licences will involve security assessment, verification and vetting, compliance with existing laws, non-transferability, and periodic monitoring and reporting. The decision to enable arms licensing for indigenous residents was taken during the state cabinet meeting on May 28, with the objective of instilling a sense of security in communities living in high-risk zones. Sarma had earlier identified several such areas, including Dhubri, Morigaon, Barpeta, Nagaon, South Salmara-Mankachar, Rupahi, Dhing, and Jania — regions with significant minority populations.
