Luke Dennison the hero as Drogheda beat Derry on penalties to advance in FAI Cup
The American goalkeeper saved twice from Jamie Stott and Danny Mullen while Adam Frizzell fired over the bar as the Boynesiders won 3-0 on penalties with Owen Lambe dispatching the winning spot kick.
It's one win in the last six games in all competitions for Derry with Tiernan Lynch's first season in charge threatening to fizzle out.
Six times winners Derry, who were out to avenge last year's FAI Cup final defeat to the Co. Louth men, found themselves behind after two minutes.
Andrew Quinn, who scored the first goal in that 2-0 cup final victory at the Aviva Stadium last November, broke the deadlock for the Boynesiders after just two minutes.
Swansea City loanee Josh Thomas did brilliantly to cut the ball back into the defender's path after a quickly worked free-kick and Quinn side footed it into the net at the near post.
It was a disastrous start for Derry and it could've been a lot worse but for Brian Maher's heroics when producing a stunning save to deny Ryan Brennan's close range effort on the hour mark.
Five minutes later Michael Duffy produced a moment of magic to send the game into extra-time with his ninth FAI Cup goal for his hometown club and his ninth of the season.
Luke Dennison denied Ronan Boyce's point blank header with an instinctive save during stoppage time in the first half of extra-time.
Derry skipper Mark Connolly had the ball in the back of the Drogheda net late on but referee Rob Harvery ruled his header out for a foul on Conor Keeley in the build-up.
Ben Doherty was shown a straight red card in stoppage time at the end of extra time for dissent after Duffy felt he should've had a penalty kick.
The match was to be decided on penalties and Dennison saved twice before Lambe fired home the winner emphatically to send the holders through.

Rory McIlroy prize money at BMW Championship as MacIntyre loses out to Scheffler
Rory McIlroy picked up a cheque for €376,977 as he finished in a tie for 12th position at the BMW Championship in Maryland. The Holywood man was hindered by consecutive double bogeys on the fifth and sixth holes as he struggled to close the gap on the leading group, carding a final round 70. Meanwhile, Shane Lowry went home €182,076 richer as he finished further down in the field in a tie for 23rd place on one over par for the tournament. His final round included four birdies and just one bogey as he shot a three-under-par 67. Robert MacIntyre saw a four-shot lead slip away in the final round as world number one Scottie Scheffler pulled off a stunning move to secure victory, pocketing €3,077,559 in the process. MacIntyre earned €1,846,437 for finishing second. The Scot's substantial overnight lead was reduced to just one stroke after he began Sunday with two bogeys, and despite a valiant attempt, he couldn't halt the American's growing momentum. With only two shots separating them and two holes left to play, MacIntyre could only watch as Scheffler executed an extraordinary chip from the rough, effectively sealing his victory on the penultimate hole. It was a tough pill to swallow for MacIntyre, who had created his own memorable moment on the final hole on Saturday when he sunk a 41-foot putt to maintain his significant lead. In pursuit of the win that would have guaranteed his spot in Europe's Ryder Cup team, McIntyre got off to a disastrous start on Sunday. However, Scheffler was also far from flawless, a missed putt restoring the Scot's two-stroke lead after three. The American drew level on the fifth hole after MacIntyre found a bunker with his approach shot, and Scheffler seemed unstoppable as he moved two clear on the 13th. MacIntyre managed to close the gap once more, but the 15th hole proved crucial as the Oban man failed to capitalise on Scheffler finding a bunker with his approach shot. A missed birdie putt handed the momentum back to the American. Following Scheffler's spectacular response on the 17th, MacIntyre couldn't conjure up any more final hole heroics and completed a three-over-par closing round of 73, falling two strokes short of Scheffler's 15-under-par aggregate of 265. Scottie Scheffler (Image: James Gilbert/PGA TOUR via Getty Images) "He's hit a great shot," MacIntyre said of Scheffler's pyrotechnics at the 17th. "Nothing you can do with that. I just didn't play good enough. "I got off to an absolutely horrific start. I just expected jumpers on one and two. One, it's come out dead and then it's got a massive mud ball just short of the green. "I just felt great going out today. I wasn't even expecting to be over par, to be honest. I was really expecting to go out there, foot down, and perform the way I have the last couple days." A closing round of 67 propelled Tommy Fleetwood into a share of fourth position behind American Maverick McNealy, whilst Harry Hall, who began Sunday in a tie for fourth, slipped back with a disappointing 70 to end up in sixth spot.

Why do Chelsea still not have a shirt sponsor?
Blue is the (unblemished) colour. When Reece James led the home side out for their season opener at Stamford Bridge on Sunday afternoon, Chelsea already stood alone in the Premier League. The Club World Cup winners are the only top-flight team not to feature a sponsor on their kits for the 2025/26 campaign. This is the third-straight year that the big-spending side have eschewed one of the most lucrative income streams for clubs. But why? Because owners Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital plus you'd imagine their marketing and finance departments are holding out for the absolute top dollar. Chelsea are believed to be targeting a massive pay day on the back of their summer glories in FIFA's expanded global gathering and their return to the Champions League. According to reports, the club is "aiming to strike a deal worth £60m-£65m per season". Nottingham Forest had been the only other holdout among the 20 Premier League clubs but they agreed a partnership with American casino giant Ballys this month, which meant 11 of the 20 top-flight teams have gambling firms emblazoned across the front of their kits. Chelsea are rumoured to be hopeful of a higher-brow partner yet Riyadh Air, Saudi Arabia's newest airline, have been most strongly linked to a potential deal.

Chris Forrester eyes another FAI Cup after St Patrick's Athletic victory over Shebourne
Chris Forrester is dreaming of more Sports Direct FAI Cup success with St Patrick's Athletic after reaching the quarter-final stage thanks to a 2-0 victory over Shelbourne at Richmond Park on Sunday evening. Mason Melia opened the scoring for the Saints at the end of the first half with Forrester sealing the win from the penalty spot. It was an impressive victory for Pat's given they were in Turkey on Thursday where they went 2-0 up against Besiktas before losing 3-2. With their European campaign now over, domestic matters are the focus of the Inchicore outfit's attentions. Their title hopes are long gone and there is work to do to claim a top three spot to book a spot in the Conference League next year. Forrester have helped Pat's win two of the last four FAI Cups, so he knows what is stake in the coming weeks. Asked if the Cup is particularly important now this year, Forrester told RTÉ Sport: "It always is, regardless of what's gone previously in our season. The FAI Cup games are some of the best days out in the calendar to be honest. "I have lot of fond memories in the Cup for myself. It's always a big day and you want to get back to the Aviva. I'm just glad that we progressed today and we're in the hat for the next round. "Everyone in the changing room knows that the FAI Cup is a route as well. "We're fully focused on getting it through the league as well and not just hanging our hat on the Cup. "We're progressing well, we're playing well at the moment. The carrot is there in the FAI Cup for Europe, but our league is bread and butter and we want to keep progressing in that." The cultured midfielder was pleased with what he saw from his team-mates today as well as his manager. Balancing three competitions at once is often difficult, so overcoming Shels was no easy feat. Forrester explained: "It's been a tough couple of weeks for us, but everyone's pulling the same direction in there. We had a good game plan, we saw it through, and the boys came up with a good performance. "Everyone's stuck to the game plan. I thought everyone pulled their weight away today, from the back line to Mason [Melia] up front and everyone throughout the whole team." Forrester reserved special praise for teenage star Melia, who has gone from strength to strength in the last couple of months. "I thought Mason was excellent today up top," Forrester said. "He's really coming into it now, you can see it. He's really doing well. He seems to always score here. He led the line well for us today and we're really pleased with everyone."
