Guinea name Duarte as new national coach

CNAa day ago
CONAKRY :Well-travelled Portuguese coach Paulo Duarte has been named as Guinea's new coach, less than a month before their next round of World Cup qualifiers.
Duarte, 56, has twice previously coached Burkina Faso and taken charge of Gabon and Togo, while also coaching at clubs in Portugal, France, Tunisia, Angola and Saudi Arabia.
Guinea's football federation gave no contract details when they made the announcement on Monday, but said they would be looking for Duarte to 'restructure their national team'.
Guinea trail leaders Algeria by eight points in their World Cup qualifying group with four games remaining, leaving them with only a slim chance of qualification.
They play Somalia away on September 5 and then Algeria at home on September 8 in their next two qualifiers although a stadium ban means Guinea have moved their home game to Casablanca, Morocco.

Newcastle sign German defender Thiaw from Milan

Newcastle United have signed German defender Malick Thiaw from Serie A side AC Milan, the Premier League club said late on Tuesday. Financial details were not disclosed but British media reports said Newcastle paid a transfer fee worth around 34.6 million pounds ($46.69 million) for the 24-year-old. Thiaw was a key part of Milan's defensive line-up last season, making 31 appearances across all competitions, but featured less frequently towards the end of their Serie A campaign as they suffered a disappointing eighth-placed finish. He has also played three times for Germany, with all three of those appearances coming in 2023. "We're really pleased to have Malick on board. He's a player I've admired for a long time and somebody who will add real quality to our defensive options," Newcastle manager Eddie Howe said in a statement. Thiaw is Newcastle's third signing of the summer transfer window, after winger Anthony Elanga's arrival from Nottingham Forest and goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale's signing on loan from Southampton. Newcastle, who finished fifth last season to secure a spot in the Champions League, begin their Premier League campaign with a trip to Aston Villa on Saturday. ($1 = 0.7411 pounds)

Lateness costs Bissouma place in Spurs' Super Cup squad, Solanke fit

UDINE, Italy :Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Yves Bissouma has been dropped from the squad for Wednesday's Super Cup clash against Paris St Germain due to his tardiness, manager Thomas Frank said. Frank also confirmed that striker Dominic Solanke will be available for the start of the new season despite featuring in only one of Spurs' pre-season friendlies due to an ankle injury. Speaking on Tuesday before the European season curtain-raiser between the Champions League winners and second-tier Europa League champions, Frank said: "Bissouma has been late several times and now this time, it was one too many. "With everything, you need to give your players a lot of love but also have demands and have consequences. And this was the consequence of that." New arrival Joao Palhinha, on loan from Bayern Munich, could play in place of Ivory Coast international Bissouma, though Tottenham will be without playmaker James Maddison, who faces a lengthy spell on the sidelines with an ACL injury. New manager Frank's tenure could start with a gleam of silverware if Spurs manage to defeat European champions PSG, who were beaten by Chelsea in last month's Club World Cup final. The Dane added that a lighter pre-season since Tottenham's Europa League triumph on May 21 could give his comparatively better-rested side an edge over the French team. "We have had a more normal pre-season which is what every coach would prefer. In that way, it can be an advantage. But on the flip side, they have had a long season and played a lot of games recently," Frank said. "It's the right time to face PSG. We are ready. I am 100 per cent convinced that it will be very super competitive tomorrow. "But of course, over the whole season they are in a better place to perform better. But in a single game, we will be ready." Though Spurs are without former captain Son Heung-min after his move to MLS side LAFC, Frank said their Argentine World Cup-winning defender Cristian Romero would be a key figure. "Romero is going to be a very important and experienced player for the team. He is going to be a very, very big player for us tomorrow," he said.

Everton sign Grealish on season-long loan

Sign up now: Get ST's newsletters delivered to your inbox LIVERPOOL, England - England midfielder Jack Grealish joined Everton on a season-long loan from Manchester City on Tuesday in a bid to revive his international career. The deal was announced by both clubs. City paid Aston Villa 100 million pounds ($135.08 million) for the player, now 29, in 2021 but he fell out of favour with manager Pep Guardiola and is seeking game time ahead of next year's World Cup. Media reports said Everton, who finished last season 13th overall and are managed by David Moyes, had an option to make the move permanent for 50 million pounds at the end of the loan period. Grealish's current weekly wages have been put at 300,000 pounds. Everton said Grealish would wear the number 18, the same number worn by past club greats Paul Gascoigne and Wayne Rooney. "I'm over the moon to have signed for Everton. It's massive for me, honestly. This is a great club, with great fans," the player said in a statement. Top stories Swipe. Select. Stay informed. Grealish, who had a medical on Monday and was at Everton's training ground on Tuesday, made only seven league starts last season and was not included in City's recent Club World Cup squad. He was also omitted from England's 2024 European Championship squad and has spoken of his determination to get back in the reckoning under Thomas Tuchel and add to his 39 senior caps. "I think we're getting him at a good time because he's experienced, he understands the Premier League, and we're all fully aware of the levels he's capable of performing to," said Moyes. "I know Jack's ambition is to get back into the England squad so hopefully we can help him achieve that over the course of the season." Grealish scored 17 goals for City in 157 appearances and was involved in three Premier League title triumphs as well as winning the 2023 Champions League, FA Cup and Club World Cup. He is Everton's sixth and biggest signing of the summer with the Liverpool club ready to start afresh at a new 52,769 seat stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock. REUTERS
