Wichita Falls camp empowers kids with hands-on learning
WICHITA FALLS (KFDX/KJTL) — A local summer camp is making big waves this year, not just with swimming pools, but with reading, math, and real-world skills.
Kids in Wichita Falls have a chance to dive into more than just fun this summer.
The All Hands Playwell Summer Camp will be packed with activites designed to support kids emotionally, socially, and academically for just $20.
It's more than just a summer camp at All Hands Cultural Community Center, its a place where kids come to grow.
'Relationships come first with the students, and we just empower individuals to grow personally, grow spiritually, kind of establish their identity and who they are. And then also on top of that, just having that career readiness,' Jackson said.
For just $20 per child, campers can choose a variety of activities, from swimming and cosmetology, to gardening, math lessons, bible study and more.
'Culinary arts, first aid, cosmetology, art classes, gardening, reading, math, gym and life skills, as well as spiritual classes like bible study.'
One of the most pivotal classes is life skills, taught by camp leader, Eternity Jackson.
'Anger management, stress management, mental health classes, physical health like nutrition like it,' Jackson said. 'It ranges from the small thing to the large things there all hands on. So it's not like, oh, they're just doing a worksheet. You know, they're actually gonna walk through those scenarios and kind of teach us that.It's like, okay, this is what I learned. And now I'm going to actually apply to my life'
Free meals are also included, making this camp a lifeline for working families during the long summer months.
'In all honestly, we understand that people, especially in this area can't really afford it. And so, even with the donations, like a lot of people donate to this program just because they have seen the results in the past, it doesn't only benefit their behavior here, it also benefits their behavior at school and in the community.'
From swimming, to school prep, all hands is making sure every child has a safe and supportive place to grow this summer.
On Friday, June 13, the center will partner with the Wichita Falls Food Bank for a free food distribution from from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.

Landscape supervisor turned hero: Man helps over 2 dozen people, pets escape apartment fire
They say not all heroes wear capes, and that is exactly the case with Cornelius Rainey. The people he helped save from a burning apartment complex in Hyde Park on Wednesday night agree. The Landscape supervisor was visiting his family at Riverbank Apartments on Wednesday, June 4, when he quickly realized something was wrong. 'I looked to the left and see fire, flames shooting out the building,' said Rainey. 'That's when I went and helped everyone out of their apartment.' >>> STREAM ACTION NEWS JAX LIVE <<< Around 4:45 pm Wednesday, JFRD responded to a fire at Riverbank apartments in Hyde Park. JFRD said the fire originated in a bedroom inside one of the apartments. The fire quickly spread to the attic, and as a result of that, JFRD told me they told JEA to cut the power off for the entire building. The state fire marshal is currently investigating the cause of the fire. Without hesitating, Rainey said he ran inside the burning building and began banging on residents' doors, telling them it was time to go. 'I was trying to kick people's doors in, burglary style, but it wasn't flying open,' said Rainey. 'And the doors that I didn't get opened, kicked in, it was people actually in those apartments, too.' [DOWNLOAD: Free Action News Jax app for alerts as news breaks] Rainey tells me he helped get 15 people and 3 dogs out of the burning building, including an elderly woman in a wheelchair. 'I was knocking on their door. It wouldn't open; I opened the door. She was sitting in the living room. Her husband was trying to get her out. And I just grabbed him. I said 'Move, man. I got her, I got her,' said Rainey. 'I grabbed her and rolled her out. And that's how she got out there.' I asked Rainey why he decided to run into that building. He said it was instinct. 'I just care about people. I was just helping everybody. I couldn't leave them in there. The building was shooting fire, like real big flames,' said Rainey. Rainey told me everyone he helped was extremely grateful to him, and he was just happy that everyone was safe. The Red Cross said it assisted a total of 34 individuals displaced by this fire. In addition, there are also other people displaced. Jackson was on her way back home from work on Wednesday when she got a call telling her apartment building was on fire and she needed to evacuate. 'When I walked up, I just see this black apartment complex,' said Jackson. 'I just moved in literally I haven't been here for not even a month yet. And everything I work hard for is ruined.' I spoke with Riverbank Apartment's Property Manager about what they are doing to help residents during this time. They told me everyone who was impacted by the fire can access their units, but they need to obtain an access pass through the city, which they have available if residents contact them. Wichita Falls Symphony hosts jazz night at Kemp Center during Art Walk
WICHITA FALLS (KFDX/KJTL) – The June Art Walk is here, and the Wichita Falls Symphony Orchestra invites the community to a jazz night at the Kemp Center. While all the fun continues downtown in Wichita Falls on Thursday, June 5, there will also be fun activities at the Sculpture Garden at the Kemp Center, weather permitting. The Wichita Falls Symphony Orchestra will be playing live jazz tunes while The Traveling Tavern bar serves up beverages. The event will proceed rain or shine, but if it does rain, the orchestra will relocate into the Great Hall. Seats are limited, but you are welcome to bring lawn chairs to enjoy the live music. Wichita Falls city council backs grant for Circle Trail project
WICHITA FALLS (KFDX/KJTL) — The city is attempting to complete the Circle Trail by applying for a grant through the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT). On Tuesday, June 3, Wichita Falls city council signed a resolution supporting the city's efforts. It's a step that city officials needed to take to apply for the grant by Friday, June 20. Assistant Public Works Director Tyson Traw said the grant is competitive. If approved, the grant will cover 80% of the construction cost. The city will match 20%. The total cost is about $5.6 million. 'This will include the construction funds for the construction, design and environmental permitting if necessary,' Traw said. 'We intend to incorporate a lot of safety measures, bollards and things like that that we've heard from concerned citizens.' At the last city council meeting, Lake Shore Drive neighbors continued to raise concerns about the trail's location. Traw said the city should know by October whether it has received the grant.
