Eurovision says 'wait and see' on Celine Dion
Just hours before Saturday's Eurovision Song Contest grand final, organisers were tight-lipped about whether ailing superstar Celine Dion might make an emotional appearance, 37 years after winning the competition.
"Father Christmas exists, and you'll have to wait and see," Eurovision director Martin Green told a press conference, when asked directly if Dion might show up.
At both of Friday's dress rehearsals for the final, as at Tuesday's semi-final, a video message from Dion was played, with the presenters announcing that she could not be with them in Basel, Switzerland for the world's biggest televised live music event.
But Eurovision 2025 co-executive producer Moritz Stadler said on Saturday that the show was still being adapted.
"There are constant changes. Our team has been working overnight until very late," he said. "We continue changing it for the grand final."
BBC television reported that Dion's private plane was in Basel, but did not know if she was on it.
And Swiss newspaper Blick said that selected staff with printed schedules for the final "can see that the recorded greeting from the rehearsals and the first Eurovision semi-final is no longer included".
"This indicates that the clip played during rehearsals has been replaced," the tabloid added.

Dion, 57, is now a global music icon. But she has never forgotten the role the song contest played in launching her on the international stage.
Dion was 20 and little-known outside her native French-speaking Quebec province in Canada when she won Eurovision in 1988, representing Switzerland with the song "Ne Partez Pas Sans Moi".

Switzerland duly hosted Eurovision 1989, where Dion opened the TV extravaganza with her winning French-language song.
She then premiered the single "Where Does My Heart Beat Now" -- heralding her career switch into English, which set her on the path to global chart domination.
With Eurovision 2025 returning to Switzerland, organisers reached out to Dion.
However, the singer is now battling a debilitating health condition and rarely appears in public.
"We are still in contact with Celine Dion. As always, her health remains our top priority," a Eurovision 2025 spokeswoman told AFP on Friday.

Dion first disclosed in December 2022 that she had been diagnosed with Stiff Person Syndrome, a painful autoimmune disorder which is progressive and for which there is no cure.
She was forced to cancel a string of shows scheduled for 2023 and 2024, saying she was not strong enough to tour.

But she gave a surprise, show-stopping performance from the Eiffel Tower at the Paris 2024 Olympics opening ceremony.
"I'd love nothing more than to be with you in Basel right now," Dion said in her video clip.
"Winning the Eurovision Song Contest for Switzerland in 1988 was a life-changing moment for me.
"Music unites us -- not only tonight, not only in this wonderful moment. It is our strength, our support, and our accompaniment in times of need."

Before Dale started surfing, he was already adept at paddleboarding and bodyboarding. He picked up surfing for the movie and quickly found his new favourite hobby. In the past two years, the 6-year-old has loved standing on a blue, 11-foot long surfboard with his owner, Greg Dutcher, at a Honolulu surfing spot. Image: The Washington Post After Dutcher bought Dale from a San Diego breeder in the spring of 2019, the French bulldog with a fawn and white coat learned to ride a small skateboard at tennis and basketball courts. He also enjoyed going to the beach - although he was initially scared of the water. Once he went in for the first time, he picked up swimming naturally and didn't want to leave. He now wears an orange life jacket. Dale became comfortable standing on Dutcher's paddleboard and also on a bodyboard to ride the waves. Beachgoers usually pull out their phones for photos and videos when they see Dale in the water. When Dutcher or Eggers take him out of the water, Dale often jumps back in and sometimes hops onto other boards so he can stay longer. Dale, who weighs 25 pounds, enjoys walks - but only at the beach. When Eggers tries to walk him around her neighbourhood, he stops after a bit and sits on the concrete. Eggers said she thought Dale would be in a commercial. Dutcher took Dale to a surfing spot in Waikiki, a Honolulu neighbourhood, to meet J. Tyler London, who trains dogs to ride on surfboards and paddleboards. Dale balanced on the surfboard on his first try. 'He's so fearless,' Eggers said. Eggers was shocked when she later learned that Dale would be in 'Lilo & Stitch.' Dale reminded Eggers of Stitch because he makes similar gravely, nasally noises, she said. Dale's owners bought him a stuffed Stitch doll. In June 2023, Dale and London rode a surfboard together while cameras, boom mics and other equipment recorded them in Oahu, Eggers said. While the production crew needed to film other scenes afterward, Eggers said, Dale wanted to stay in the ocean. Dale's love for surfing blossomed afterward. He competes in a Honolulu surfing competition - where people surf with their dogs on board - in August with Dutcher, 43. Last month, when Disney began releasing clips from 'Lilo & Stitch' on YouTube, Eggers often checked her phone for updates, hoping to see one that starred Dale. On May 8, she said she gasped when she saw a video of Stitch, sitting on a beach eating sand, watching Dale ride the surfboard with London. Eggers, 44, showed the footage to Dale, hoping he would recognize himself. Alas, he stood and walked away. Eggers and Dutcher watched the movie, including Dale's brief cameo surfing with London, at a local theatre when it came out. It made $145.5 million domestically in its opening weekend. On Monday, a beachgoer recognized Dale at a Honolulu beach. While Dale doesn't seem to care about his newfound notoriety, or the several seconds he shows off his surfing skills to the world, he does seem quite happy about the extra time it's afforded him on the water. Unbeknownst to Dale, his internet fame has even grown with dog lovers. Dutcher received messages from French bulldog owners who said their dogs were born from the same breeder and on the same day as Dale, meaning they might be related. When Eggers learned one of Dale's long-lost sisters is named Lilo, she figured Dale was meant to be in 'Lilo & Stitch.' 'It was destiny,' Eggers said.

Gaming fans bring electric energy to Rotterdam as TwitchCon arrives
ROTTERDAM - A few metro stops from Rotterdam's Ahoy Arena, chatter is already flowing among gaming fans -- TwitchCon passes swinging from their necks, animal ears perched on their heads. The Dutch city is hosting TwitchCon this weekend -- the annual event run by United States streaming giant Twitch -- where fans can meet their favourite creators and join the celebrations. Thousands of fans from across Europe turned out to meet their favourite creators and watch live e-sports events, including Fortnite and Elden Ring, staged by Twitch celebrities. "Most of the work that happens on Twitch is online, it's digital," said Mary Kish, a marketing director at Twitch. "You're streaming with other people, you're hanging out with your community for many hours a week. "What happens at TwitchCon is the culmination of all of that goodwill and all of that joy in person at a con, and the energy is electric," said the 39-year-old, who is from the United States. French streamers JL Tomy and Etoiles -- who have 1.3 million and 1.2 million followers -- were also among those in attendance. "It's fun because there are lots of other partner streamers who are like me," said JL Tomy, 28, whose real name is Toma Abdellaoui. "I'm very much a homebody," said the streamer, whose content focuses on GTA, Valorant, League of Legends and e-sports competitions. Acquired by Amazon in 2014 for roughly $842 million, Twitch is the world's leading streaming platform for gaming, with more than 2.5 million hourly viewers on average. While gaming remains core to Twitch since its 2011 debut, the platform has broadened its reach, drawing in entertainment, sports and political figures, as well as livestreaming other major events. Kish said that Twitch's "Just Chatting" category is now its largest non-gaming segment. "There is a massive variety of other people doing other things. Like food and drink, where people are cooking... people who are showing their aquariums in their houses," Kish said. Reflecting that diversity, visitors attended theatre workshops, built Lego models, or watched the annual Drag Queen show, a TwitchCon staple. TwitchCon's next North American edition is scheduled for October 17–19, 2025, in San Diego.
