Washington (AFP)Joe Biden expressed his gratitude to Americans on Monday for their "love and support" after the former US president said he had been diagnosed with prostate cancer.The weekend revelation that the 82-year-old Democrat had been diagnosed with an "aggressive" form of prostate cancer, and that it had spread to his bones, sparked an outpouring of good wishes, including from current President Donald Trump, Biden's vice president Kamala Harris, and everyday Americans."Cancer touches us all. Like so many of you, Jill and I have learned that we are strongest in the broken places," the former president, whose son Beau Biden died of cancer in 2015, posted on X with a photograph of him and his wife."Thank you for lifting us up with love and support," he said.Biden was diagnosed with the disease on Friday after he experienced urinary symptoms and a prostate nodule was found, a statement from his office said."While this represents a more aggressive form of the disease, the cancer appears to be hormone-sensitive which allows for effective management. The President and his family are reviewing treatment options with his physicians," it added.Trump, who has long derided Biden over his cognitive abilities and his four years in office, said he was "saddened" by the news."We extend our warmest and best wishes to Jill and the family, and we wish Joe a fast and successful recovery," Trump, 78, posted Sunday on Truth Social.Prostate cancer is the most common form of cancer in men, with the American Cancer Society reporting that one in eight men in the United States are diagnosed with it over their lifetime.While it is highly treatable if discovered early, it is the second leading cause of cancer death in men, the organization said.
Hormone therapy is a common treatment that can shrink tumors and slow cancer growth, but is not a cure.

Israeli forces kill 27 more Palestinians in Gaza
Palestinian health officials and witnesses say Israeli forces fired on people as they headed toward an aid distribution site on Tuesday, killing at least 27, in the third such incident in three days. Israel's military campaign has killed over 54,000 Palestinians, mostly women and children, according to the Gaza Health Ministry. The ministry is led by medical professionals but reports to the Hamas-run government. The army said it fired "near a few individual suspects' who left the designated route, approached its forces and ignored warning shots. The near-daily shootings have come after an Israeli and US-backed foundation established aid distribution points inside Israeli military zones, a system it says is designed to circumvent Hamas. AFP The United Nations has rejected the new system, saying it doesn't address Gaza's mounting hunger crisis and allows Israel to use aid as a weapon. The Israeli military said it was looking into reports of casualties on Tuesday. It previously said it fired warning shots at suspects who approached its forces early Sunday and Monday, when health officials and witnesses said 34 people were killed. The military denies opening fire on civilians or blocking them from reaching the aid sites. The Gaza Humanitarian Foundation, which operates the sites, says there has been no violence in or around them. On Tuesday, it acknowledged that the Israeli military was investigating whether civilians were wounded "after moving beyond the designated safe corridor and into a closed military zone,' in an area that was "well beyond our secure distribution site.' The shootings all occurred at the Flag Roundabout, around a kilometer (1,000 yards) from one of the GHF's distribution sites in the now mostly uninhabited southern city of Rafah. The entire area is an Israeli military zone where journalists have no access outside of army-approved embeds. At least 27 people were killed early Tuesday, according to Zaher al-Waheidi, the head of the Gaza Health Ministry's records department. The 27 dead were transferred to Nasser Hospital in the city of Khan Younis. Yasser Abu Lubda, a 50-year-old displaced Palestinian from Rafah, said the shooting started around 4 a.m. in the city's Flag Roundabout area, around one kilometer (1,000 yards) away from the aid distribution hub. He said he saw several people killed or wounded. Neima al-Aaraj, a woman from Khan Younis, gave a similar account. "There were many martyrs and wounded,' she said, saying the shooting by Israeli forces was "indiscriminate.' She said she managed to reach the hub but returned empty-handed. "There was no aid there,' she said. "After the martyrs and wounded, I won't return,' she said. "Either way we will die.' Rasha al-Nahal, another witness, said "there was gunfire from all directions.' She said she counted more than a dozen dead and several wounded along the road. She said she also found no aid when she arrived at the distribution hub, and that Israeli forces "fired at us as we were returning.' The Israeli military meanwhile said Tuesday that three of its soldiers were killed in the Gaza Strip, in what appeared to be the deadliest attack on Israel's forces since it ended a ceasefire with Hamas in March. The military said the three soldiers, all in their early 20s, fell during combat in northern Gaza on Monday, without providing details. Israeli media reported that they were killed in an explosion in the Jabaliya area. Israel ended the ceasefire in March after Hamas refused to change the agreement to release more hostages sooner. Israeli strikes have killed thousands of Palestinians since then, according to Gaza's Health Ministry. Hamas-led fighters killed some 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and took 251 people hostage in the Oct. 7, 2023, attack into Israel that ignited the war. They are still holding 58 hostages, a third of them believed to be alive, after most of the rest were released in ceasefire agreements or other deals. Nawrocki wins Polish presidential election
Nationalist historian Karol Nawrocki won Poland's presidential election, official results showed Monday, in a major blow for the pro-EU government and for abortion and LGBTQ rights campaigners. The 42-year-old fan of US President Donald Trump scored 50.9 per cent of the vote in Sunday's runoff in the highly polarised NATO and EU nation. His 53-year-old rival Rafal Trzaskowski, Warsaw's pro-EU mayor and an ally of the centrist government led by Prime Minister Donald Tusk, won 49.1 percent. Nawrocki said he wanted Poland to be 'a state that matters in international, European and transatlantic relations'. 'I will represent you with dignity on the international state, ensuring Poland is treated as an equal,' he said on X. Trzaskowski took hours to concede defeat. 'Congratulations to Karol Nawrocki... This win is an obligation, especially in such difficult times. Especially with a close result. Don't forget that,' he said on X. Nawrocki's win will block the government's progressive agenda for abortion and LGBTQ rights and could revive tensions with Brussels over rule-of-law issues. 'Nawrocki's presidency will be a rough ride for the Tusk government,' analyst Piotr Buras said in a statement. He told AFP the election result was a 'yellow card' for the government and could lead to 'early parliamentary elections, maybe not this year, but next'. Nawrocki's victory could also undermine strong ties with neighbouring Ukraine, as he is critical of Kyiv's EU and NATO accession plans and wants to cut benefits for Ukrainian refugees. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Monday that he looked forward to 'continued fruitful cooperation with Poland and with President Nawrocki personally'. Polish presidents have some influence over foreign and defence policy and wield veto power over legislation. Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk on Monday called for a parliamentary confidence vote in a bid to demonstrate continued support for his pro-EU government after a nationalist candidate won the presidential election. In a televised address, Tusk said he would 'ask for a vote of confidence in the lower house soon' in his coalition government.
