UK's 'most underrated' seaside town sees tourist spike with £2m transformation
A small but charming seaside town that has long been overlooked is finally witnessing a tourist boom, after almost £2 million has been spent on improving the resort for holidaymakers and locals
A tiny seaside town that has remained under the tourist radar for years has finally been cast into the spotlight.
Often touted as the UK's most 'underrated' coastal gem, Saltburn-by-the-Sea - commonly referred to as just Saltburn - has been attracting tourists since 1861. But, while most of the UK's coastline started to fall into decline after the Benidorm boom, Saltburn has sustained its appeal, and has been quietly undergoing a huge makeover.
The resort - located in North Yorkshire under the Redcar and Cleveland authority - boasts an eight-mile stretch of golden sandy beach, which melts into rugged green cliffs. It's the perfect place for sitting back with a good book, rock pooling, or even surfing (if you're brave enough to face the chilly waters). There's also Saltburn Pier, which opened back in 1869 and stretches out into the North Sea for 200 metres.
But Saltburn's biggest claim to fame has to be its Cliff Tramway, which is the oldest water balanced funicular still in operation in Great Britain. Tourists can pay just £2 to ride in quaint carriages that offer stunning sea views and get transported straight down to the beach.
"The delightful coastal town Saltburn-by-the-sea bestows plenty of Victorian charm and thrills," hails Yorkshire.com. "From the water balanced cliff lifts to the last remaining pier in Yorkshire, Saltburn promises its visitors an authentic seaside experience! There's plenty to entertain too as the town has an up and coming arts scene, lots of restaurants and plenty of daring water sports to try."
Speaking exclusively to the Mirror, Councillor Carrie Richardson, deputy leader and cabinet member for Climate and Culture at Redcar & Cleveland Borough Council, described Saltburn as one of the region's most 'popular and much-loved beauty spots' - revealing that visitor numbers are continuing to grow year on year. "Its unique Victorian charm, which features a traditional pier, a historic water-balanced cliff tramway, boutique B&Bs, Italian gardens, a stunning coastline and a vibrant food and drink scene, makes it a truly special place to visit," she added.
"Saltburn has even featured on BBC's Robson Green's Weekend Escapes and Channel 4's Yorkshire by the Sea. This growing popularity increased the demand for visitor infrastructure, particularly during the peak tourist season."
Cllr Richardson said the council is 'delighted' to see the positive impact recent improvements had on both tourists and local hospitality businesses. Overall, almost £2 million has been pumped into the town to improve accessibility, better transport links, and upgrade crumbling infrastructure.
The regeneration includes increasing the capacity of the most popular car park in Saltburn and building an overflow car park in adjacent land to deal with soaring tourist numbers. This also includes EV charging and infrastructure for motorhomes. Major improvements - including a resurfaced footway, new street lighting, and additional seating - have been completed on the Upper Promenade, while essential infrastructure upgrades have been carried out on the Lower Promenade. This includes renewing the historic balustrade.
Saltburn has also seen its grade-two listed Albert Memorial landmark - which was falling into disrepair - get restored. Funding was also allocated to improving other local footpaths to make it 'easier to explore Saltburn on foot'.

TUI's newest flight route from UK takes Brits to beautiful country 3-hours away
TUI has unveiled a brand new flight route, whizzing Brits over to a stunning country filled with intricate architecture, vibrant shopping scene and a rich history - and it's just 3 hours from the UK A tiny UK airport is slated for a huge boost after securing an exclusive new route with TUI. The travel firm has announced it will debut direct flights from Newcastle Airport to Sofia, the capital of Bulgaria, later this year - just in time for the ski season. The service will operate once a week on Saturdays, with the first flight scheduled to depart on Saturday, December 20. TUI says the new route, which will complement the existing London Gatwick, Dublin, Manchester and Birmingham services, will help connect the north-east to Bulgaria's winter sports resorts - such as Bansko, Pamporovo and Borovets. The new flights are available on a flight-only basis, as well as part of Crystal Ski Holidays packages. Sofia is a great budget-friendly destination for ski enthusiasts who don't want to break the bank by visiting the ultra-expensive Alps. The city is surrounded by soaring mountains that you can hike in the summer - or race down in the winter in your salopettes. If you're looking for a more laid-back holiday, don't worry. Sofia is filled with stunning architecture, a ubiquitous history, and plenty of cheap bars. History buffs will love St Alexander Nevski Cathedral, a Neo-Byzantine landmark renowned for its gold and green dome. The church was built as a memorial to the 200,000 Russian soldiers who died in the Russo-Turkish Liberation War and boasts an intricately beautiful interior. Vitosha Boulevard is great for those wanting to admire the rugged mountains from afar. The pristine strip is filled with a 'rich array' of shops, eateries, and cafes and perfectly encapsulates the 'spirit of the city'. Day trips to Rila Monastery - the largest and most famous Eastern Orthodox monastery in Bulgaria - and the nearby Rila Lakes are also popular. In a statement sent to the Mirror, TUI's Chris Logan said the firm was 'excited' to introduce the new route following 'strong customer demand'. "The Bulgarian ski resorts have always been a popular choice with Crystal customers, and we're pleased to make the destination even more accessible for travellers from Newcastle and the North of England," he added. "Boasting high quality hotels, excellent value for money, highly rated ski schools and lively nightlife, Bankso, Pamporovo and Borovets are brilliant ski resorts all easily reached from Sofia Airport with transfers included with Crystal Ski Holidays." Leon McQuaid of Newcastle Airport also welcomed the news, praising TU for 'continuing to invest' in the hub. "This exciting new destination gives our passengers even more choice to explore some of Europe's best-value ski resorts and it's another great addition to our growing winter schedule," he added. "We look forward to celebrating with TUI Airways when the new route takes off in December." TUI is currently offering return flights to Sofa from Newcastle for just £293, which includes 15kg of checked-in luggage and 10kg of hand luggage per person. *Prices based on passengers departing on January 10, 2026 and returning on January 17, 2026.

Hilton unveils its first property on north coast following £11m renovation
The 80-room Marcus Portrush is a Tapestry Collection by Hilton venue, and marks Hilton's first presence on the north coast. Its opening takes place ahead of golf extravaganza The Open at Royal Portrush in July. Andras House, led by chief executive Rajesh Rana, had carried out an £11m renovation on an old Victorian-era hotel on Main Street where The Marcus is now located. According to an economic impact assessment carried out by Andras House, the hotel is tipped to boost the economy in the area by £1.1m in annual visitor spending, while creating over 40 permanent jobs. Hilton said the restoration 'carefully preserves historic features, including original mosaic signage, decorative floor mosaics reflecting the site's rich hospitality heritage, and the restored tiled façade'. The company said the new hotel's name, 'whimsical design' and 'coastal charm' were inspired by fictional character Marcus, described as a 'comic book-style adventurer'. Children staying at the hotel are to receive a complimentary storybook about his adventures. There are historical photographs on display in the hotel to celebrate Portrush's heritage as a Victorian tourist resort, while the interior design is said to draw inspiration from the surrounding coastline. The hotel has an Asian fusion restaurant, Nemesis, featuring classics like sirloin steak, as well as Asian dishes. And its cocktail bar has been designed to evoke 'the charm of snug harbour bars, with low ceilings, rich textures, and a warm, intimate atmosphere'. Its cocktail menu includes Poitín with mango. Stephen Cassidy, senior vice president, UK & Ireland, Hilton, said: 'Northern Ireland has seen a strong rise in tourism in recent years, drawing travellers from around the world to experience its unique charm. "As the only internationally branded hotel in Portrush, The Marcus Portrush, Tapestry Collection by Hilton, offers high-quality accommodation with an authentic local touch – making it the perfect base for visitors eager to explore all that Northern Ireland has to offer.' Rajesh Rana, director at Andras House, said: 'I am delighted to be welcoming our first guests to this exciting and high-profile project. "Portrush has so much history and fond memories created here over the years, and our architects and designers have responded by delivering a scheme that embody these stories in a modern style. "This investment of £11m will bring much needed modern hotel accommodation to the area, helping to regenerate the Main Street of Portrush and secure its future as a must-go tourism destination.'
