Olympic star, 3-time pro champion Vasiliy Lomachenko announces retirement from boxing
Vasiliy Lomachenko has announced his retirement from boxing after a decorated career that included two Olympic gold medals and professional world titles in three weight classes.
Lomachenko announced his decision with a video on social media Thursday.
'I am grateful for every victory and every defeat, both in the ring and in life,' Lomachenko said. 'I'm thankful that as my career comes to an end, I've gained clarity about the direction a person must take in order to achieve true victory.'
The Ukrainian star burst onto the international boxing scene at the Beijing Olympics in 2008, when the 20-year-old prospect steamrolled the competition. He showed off athleticism, footwork and ring intelligence far beyond his years, clearly marking himself as a once-in-a-generation talent.
But he eschewed the professional sport and returned to win gold at the London Games four years later alongside Oleksandr Usyk, his close friend and the future undisputed professional world heavyweight champion. After going 396-1 as an amateur, Lomachenko finally embarked on a pro career largely spent in the U.S.
Lomachenko won the WBO featherweight title in his third professional fight in June 2014, beating Gary Russell Jr. after ordering his promoters to get him a near-immediate title shot after turning pro. He won the junior lightweight belt in 2016 by stopping Román Martínez, and he added the WBA lightweight world title in 2018, stopping Jorge Linares.
Lomachenko finished his pro career 18-3 with 12 stoppage victories, incurring late-career decision losses to Teofimo Lopez and Devin Haney.
'It's been an honor for all of us at Top Rank to promote the pro boxing career of Vasiliy Lomachenko,' said Bob Arum, Lomachenko's U.S. promoter. 'He was a generational champion, and we will all miss his participation in the sport.'
Lomachenko paused his career for several months after Russia's invasion of Ukraine, and he has fought only three times since 2021. He stopped George Kambosos Jr. in the 11th round of his final bout in May 2024.

NBA's talks about new league in Europe are continuing, though the process remains in early stages
OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — The NBA's talks with FIBA and other entities about the process of adding a new league in Europe are continuing, Commissioner Adam Silver said, though he noted that it may take at least a couple more years to turn the ideas into reality. Silver spoke at a league event to unveil a refurbished Boys & Girls Club in Oklahoma City on Friday — an off day for the NBA Finals — and said it's difficult to put a specific timeline on the Europe plans. 'I will say it's measured in years, not months,' Silver said. 'So, we're at least a couple years away from launching. It would be an enormous undertaking. And while we want to move forward at a deliberate pace, we also want to make sure that we're consulting with all the appropriate stakeholders, meaning the existing league, its teams, European players, media companies, marketing partners. There's a lot of work to be done.' Silver and FIBA secretary general Andreas Zagklis announced in March that the league and the game's governing body are finally taking long-awaited steps to form a new league, with an initial target of 16 teams. It had been talked about for years, and decades even on some levels. And since the NBA and FIBA went public with their idea to move forward, talks have gotten more constructive, Silver said. Silver said the NBA has been talking directly with the EuroLeague and with some member clubs about a partnership. It's his preference that the NBA work with the existing league on some level, though it's still too early to say exactly what that means. 'Either way, we continue to feel there are an enormous number of underserved basketball fans in Europe and that there's a strong opportunity to have another league styled after the NBA,' Silver said. About one in every six current NBA players hails from Europe, including Denver's Nikola Jokic (Serbia) and Milwaukee's Giannis Antetokounmpo (Greece) — who have combined for five of the last seven MVP awards — along with the Los Angeles Lakers' Luka Doncic (Slovenia) and San Antonio's Victor Wembanyama (France). The NBA's board of governors will talk more about next steps with the European plans in July at their scheduled meeting in Las Vegas, Silver said. It's possible that the European venture could be unveiled in some way — or possibly start — around the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, just given how much attention will be on international basketball at that time. Chebet runs second fastest 5,000 ever at Rome's Diamond League meet
ROME (AP) — Olympic champion Beatrice Chebet ran the second fastest women's 5,000 meters of all time at Rome's Diamond League meet on Friday. The Kenyan clocked 14 minutes, 3.69 seconds to come within range of the world record of 14:00.21 set by Gudaf Tsegay of Ethiopia two years ago. Chebet's previous best was 14:05.92 in the race that Tsefay set the world record. Chebet holds the world record in the 10,000. Summer McIntosh is figuring it out at the Canadian swim trials
Canada's most dominant Olympic athlete returns to competition this weekend as Summer McIntosh ramps up for next month's world championships at the national swimming trials in Victoria. The trials, taking place Saturday through Thursday, will determine who represents Canada at the July 27-Aug. 3 world championships in Singapore. McIntosh, the now 18-year-old phenom who won a national-record three Olympic gold medals and a silver last summer in Paris, will have no trouble making the team in any event she wants. But exactly which events she'll choose to swim in Victoria is a matter of some intrigue. McIntosh has already declared a lofty goal for the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles: five individual gold medals. That would match Michael Phelps' legendary haul in 2008 in Beijing, where he added three relay victories to capture a single-Games record eight golds. McIntosh confirmed last week that she'll soon begin working with Phelps' old coach, Bob Bowman, as part of her ambitious plan. But the project is already in motion as McIntosh has declared her intention to compete in five solo events at the upcoming world championships. She'll use the Canadian trials to help figure out what those five will be. McIntosh has officially entered seven events at the six-day trials in Victoria, but it's highly unlikely she actually swims all of them. She recently told my CBC Sports colleague Brittany MacLean Campbell that her program for the worlds will definitely include the three events she won at the Paris Olympics (200m butterfly, 200m medley, 400m medley) and the one where she took silver (400m freestyle). Her fifth event will be either the 200m backstroke, 200m freestyle or 800m freestyle — all of which she's signed up for at the trials along with the core four. The smart money seems to be on the 800 as McIntosh has devoted a lot of her time this year to longer-distance training with her current coach Fred Vergnoux at his camp on the French Riviera. So look for her to swim the 800 at the trials and, if all goes well, the worlds too. McIntosh is not the only young Canadian Olympic medallist to watch in Victoria. On the men's side there's 21-year-old Josh Liendo, the 100m butterfly silver medallist in Paris, and 19-year-old Ilya Kharun, who took bronze in both the 100 and 200 fly. The trials will also decide Canada's team for the Para world championships in September in Singapore. Nicholas Bennett won a pair of golds and a silver at last year's Paralympic Games in Paris, while Aurelie Rivard collected a medal of each colour to bring her career total to 13.
