England fight back but India lead grows

CNA4 days ago
LONDON :England picked up three key wickets in the afternoon session as India advanced to 304-6 under murky skies at tea on the third day of a fluctuating final test at The Oval on Saturday.
India extended their lead to 281 runs and are still well placed to secure the victory they need to draw the series 2-2, but England fought back well after a disappointing morning.
The hosts removed Shubman Gill with the first ball after lunch, the India captain trapped lbw by Gus Atkinson for 11 and failing to get the decision overturned on review.
Karun Nair suffered a painful blow to his hand from the next delivery which spat up off the pitch, and suddenly England and the crowd were energised.
India opener Yashasvi Jaiswal, however, continued his patient knock and moved calmly to his sixth test century and second of the series.
Harry Brook dropped Nair on 12 in the slips off Jamie Overton but the batsman had added only five more when he edged Atkinson to wicketkeeper Jamie Smith.
Ben Duckett at leg slip spilled a very difficult chance to remove Jaiswal, England's sixth dropped catch in the innings, before the batter's long vigil ended on 118 when he slashed Josh Tongue to deep backward point and Overton held a good low catch.
Ravindra Jadeja, so often the scourge of England with the bat in the series, survived a huge lbw appeal after getting the umpire's decision overturned and reached the interval on 26 not out with Dhruv Jurel on 25.
India had dominated the morning as Jaiswal and nightwatchman Akash Deep shared a stubborn partnership of 107 against a toothless England attack missing the experience of Ben Stokes, Jofra Archer and Chris Woakes due to injury.
Under the floodlights, Deep reached his first test fifty off 70 balls by hitting Atkinson for his ninth boundary before gleefully pumping his fists in celebration.
Overton removed Deep for 66 with a ball that lifted sharply and looped up to cover, but the England team and majority of spectators at the ground looked as gloomy as the weather as the players trudged off at the interval.

Mercedes upbeat after binning suspension upgrade

LONDON :Former champions Mercedes hope to be challenging for wins again when they return from Formula One's August break after binning a rear suspension upgrade that made the car slower. The upgrade was introduced at Imola in May after George Russell had finished in the top three in four of the first six races. The Briton finished only seventh in that Italian race and Mercedes dropped the upgrade for the next two rounds before bringing it back for Canada, a race Russell won. That proved misleading, and Russell struggled in the following four races until Mercedes reverted to the old package for Hungary last weekend and he finished third. Rookie teammate Kimi Antonelli was also back in the points at the Hungaroring, finishing 10th after three races without scoring. Mercedes boss Toto Wolff said the upgrade would "be ending up in a bin somewhere. "We were misled a bit by the Montreal win... we came to the conclusion it needed to come off, it went off and the car's back to solid form," said the Austrian. Trackside engineering director Andrew Shovlin said in a Hungarian GP debrief on Wednesday that the car was now easier to work with and the drivers more confident in attacking the corners. "If we make a new suspension, we're doing it to make the car go quicker... and clearly there's something that wasn't right," he added. "And it's not something that was dead obvious. Otherwise, we wouldn't have had the issue in the first place." Shovlin said the learning would help Russell in his battle with Red Bull's Max Verstappen for third place overall behind the McLaren drivers, and Mercedes chasing second in the constructors'. "Budapest showed that we've got a good car when we land it in the right place," said Shovlin. "And then hopefully there'll be an opportunity to build on our tally of race wins. "We had a great time in Montreal. There's other circuits that are a bit more like that coming up over the remaining 10 races and hopefully we'll have a few more highlights."

Injured NZ skipper Latham to miss second test against Zimbabwe

New Zealand captain Tom Latham has been ruled out of the second test against Zimbabwe after failing to recover from a shoulder injury, New Zealand Cricket said on Wednesday. Latham missed the opening test last week, with Mitch Santner stepping in to lead the side to a nine-wicket victory. Santner will continue to skipper the team after Latham failed a fitness test ahead of the second match of the two-test series starting on Thursday in Bulawayo. "It's hugely disappointing to lose Tom again," coach Rob Walter said in a statement. "He's been working hard and had been tracking well towards the second test but unfortunately today he couldn't pass his fitness tests. He's extremely gutted he won't be able to take the park and we're really feeling for him."

Emma Raducanu adds Rafael Nadal's former coach to her team ahead of US Open

Photo: Instagram / @emmaraducanu British tennis star Emma Raducanu recently added Rafael Nadal's former coach, Francisco Roig, to her team on a full-time basis. This addition happened a month before the US Open. Raducanu has been working with her British coach, Mark Petchey, on an unofficial basis ever since March, and this partnership has shown positive results in the athlete's season performance. The 22-year-old athlete had difficulties with a coach in recent years until her part-time collaboration with Petchey, which successfully led her to the quarterfinals at the Miami Open last March, followed by a last-16 run at the Italian Open and last eight in the first women's tournament at Queen's Club this year. However, Petchey is unable to become Raducanu's full-time coach due to his TV commitments. After having a trial with Roig following this year's Wimbledon, Raducanu will then start working with him for the Cincinnati Open. The Spanish coach has worked with Rafael Nadal, together with Nadal's uncle Toni, for the majority of the 22-time Grand Slam champion's tennis career. Furthermore, he was part of Matteo Berrettini's backroom staff. Roig agreed to a contract with Raducanu until the end of 2025. Raducanu to pair up with Alcaraz at the US Open Young tennis stars, Alcaraz and Raducanu, were one of the exciting pairs for this season's mixed doubles at the US Open. The pair will play on-court together for the very first time. With this, Alcaraz admitted: 'She's gonna be the boss… I'm super excited about it. I think it's going to be great. It was an amazing idea for the tournament… I've known Emma for a really long time, so we know each other. I have a really good relationship with her. We are going to enjoy it, for sure.' The Spaniard added: 'I will try to bring my doubles skill. We will try to win, but obviously it's going to be really, really fun… I was thinking that I couldn't play better unless it was with Emma. I just asked Emma if she wants to play doubles with me. Yeah, I made that special request.' With this partnership, Raducanu also expressed that Alcaraz was an inspiration to her: 'I've known him for years, and actually in Wimbledon 2021 it was like kind of the first time I started getting to know him, and I had a good run there and then also again in the US Open in 2021… And I remember he was always playing the day before me, and I was playing like the second day of the round, and I would see him win, and then I would have motivation to win and get myself into that position too.'
