Parthenium eradication drive in Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary to protect grasslands
Colloquially known as the 'Congress grass', the name has been associated with Parthenium because it grows at a fast pace in fallow lands, including wildlife sanctuaries, said well-known botanist and chairman of state expert appraisal committee for union forest ministry Jatindra Sarma.
An invasive weed from the Asteraceae family, Parthenium hysterophorus has spread aggressively, invading an estimated 1 million hectares of land across the country, including the Andaman and Nicobar Islands and Lakshadweep, as per reports.
Forest officials cautioned that Parthenium is notorious for causing various issues such as skin allergies, fever and reducing agricultural productivity and biodiversity.
To get rid of it and save the indigenous species of grass for the rhinos, park authorities have eradicated Parthenium across seven hectares in the sanctuary over the last two days. "Rhinos feed on 11 types of grasses found in Pobitora. The invasion of Parthenium has been worrying in the last two to three years.
Its growth is significant this year due to fewer floods," Pobitora range officer Pranjal Baruah said on Sunday.
As part of a three-day campaign of 'Parthenium Free Pobitora', on the first day, i.e., on Saturday, about 5.2 hectares of Parthenium was cleared by about 40 forest staff, who were led by Baruah. The drive continued on Sunday, with the team clearing a two-hectare area from the Tamuliduva area, along with members of EDCs and Pobitora Jeep Safari Association.
"Special precautions have been taken for the forest staff to avoid Parthenium allergy during the drive. Also, special emphasis has been given by the sanctuary authority for the improvement of the habitat of rhinos and other animals by way of weed eradication, soil moisture conservation, etc., so that the carrying capacity of the ecosystem can be enhanced," said Baruah
On Monday, the remaining part of about five hectares of Tamuliduva and Kamarpur areas will be covered under the drive.

CMCH surgeons perform rare limb salvage surgery
COIMBATORE: The orthopaedics department at Coimbatore Medical College Hospital (CMCH) performed a complex limb salvage surgery on the shoulder bone of a 57-year-old man. M Eswaran of Moongiltholuvu village near Udumalaipettai in Tirupur district was admitted to CMCH in July with a swollen left shoulder, which was diagnosed as squamous cell carcinoma that had metastasized from oesophageal cancer. Dr S Vetrivel Chezian, director of the Institute of Orthopaedics and Traumatology, said metastasis is common in the knee bone and the joints of the lower limbs, such as the thighs. He added that the typically diagnosed age group is young adults around thirty. He said, "The foremost factor is its rare occurrence in the upper part of the body, followed by age. Usually, when tumours are encountered at the secondary stage, that particular portion gets paralysed. But Eswaran's arm movements were intact. That's why we decided to save the bone and do a custom-made prosthesis on the left shoulder. Almost 15 cm of the prosthesis was inserted, retaining the patient's elbow bone and the rest of the limb bone. ' The surgery was multidisciplinary. 'This is the first such case in CMCH so far. Fire at Nerul hospital after safety audit cert expiration
1 2 Navi Mumbai: A major fire broke out at Nerul's Shushrusha Hospital in Sector 6 on Monday around noon. All 21 patients, including senior citizens, were immediately evacuated. Hospital's owner Dr Sanjay Tarlekar, said, "The fire broke out due to a short circuit in the air-conditioning unit in the basement, where there is a computer setup meant for printing X-ray films of patients. While the X-ray technician was taking a printout, sudden sparks in the AC unit caused the electrical wiring to catch fire." Tarlekar said the technician raised an alarm and attempted to douse the fire using an extinguisher, but the false ceiling became fodder for the fire to spread. The smoke spread to the upper three floors through the fire duct. Purushottam Jadhav, Vashi fire officer, said, "Vashi fire station received the emergency fire call the hospital at 11.58 am. Six firefighters immediately reached the spot with a fire tender and a water browser. The basement got completely charred in the fire breakout." "The fire was confined to the basement as it was prevented from spreading to the upper floors by our firefighting team. It took around three hours to completely extinguish the fire in the basement, including the cooling operation," said Jadhav. Jadhav informed that the hospital was issued the mandatory B-Form certificate, also called the Fire Safety Audit Certificate, by NMMC fire department for six months up to Dec 2024 after receiving an application in July 2024. Thereafter, the hospital did not apply for renewal, and the inspection of the hospital building by the NMMC fire department was not conducted to confirm that the hospital's fire safety measures and equipment were in compliance with regulations. As per Maharashtra Fire Prevention and Life Safety Measures Act, the B-Form Certificate is mandatorily required for hospitals as part of their overall licensing and operational requirements and is essential for ensuring a safe environment for patients and staff.
