Alesha Dixon opens up about relationship struggles amid split from her daughters' dad

Daily Record03-05-2025

Britain's Got Talent judge Alesha Dixon has opened up about her private life in a recent podcast hosted by former BGT judge David Walliams and Little Britain star Matt Lucas.
Alesha Dixon has opened up about her personal struggles insisting that she can "rise above" any issues in her private life. The 46-year-old Britain's Got Talent judge reportedly split from her partner of 12 years, Azuka Ononye, earlier this year.
Although it is now believed that living together for the sake of their children, during the tough times has helped the couple to try and reignite the spark in their romance. They are reportedly doing "all it takes" to make their marriage work.

In a recent podcast interview Alesha stated that she knows no matter what comes her way she'll survive, the Mirror reports. The star hinted at her recent tough times, saying: "If I look back at the course of my whole life, I have highs and lows, and I think that's just reflective of life, isn't it?"

"So as much as we'd all love to have the magical happy ending, life will be life. I'm sure I'll face many more challenges in my life, but no matter what challenges I'm faced with, I will rise above," she continued.
During the interview Alesha also opened up about her first marriage, and how strictly saved her from feeling lost during the divorce - she split from her ex MC Harvey in 2006 after he cheated on her.
Alesha recalled: "I felt so lost, like, so lost. I've never been in that situation before. I felt sorry for myself for a long time. Then I won Strictly Come Dancing. I'm being spun around in the air at the end. All this confetti was falling on me. I just looked up to the sky and I knew I was going to be okay."
"I could feel that energy at the time. And that really was what kind of got me through as well. Because it was a very emotionally challenging time. Being in Strictly as well, it enabled me to just be in this bubble."

Alesha opened up about her life on the Making A Scene podcast with David Walliams and Matt Lucas - Alesha and David have been friends for a number of years by both being judges on BGT.
It has been reported that Alesha confessed to her pals that her relationship with choreographer Azuka became "more of a friendship" before their rumoured split.

The couple made their last public appearance together on the red carpet at Stormzy's 30th birthday party in July 2023, and have not featured on each other's social media accounts in several months.
According to rumours Alesha and Azuka tied the knot in 2017, as she introduced him as her 'lovely husband' while appearing on Michael McIntyre's Big Show Christmas Special in December 2017. However neither of them have confirmed if a wedding actually took place.
The pair share two daughters Azura 10, and Anaya four, together.
Additionally on the Making A Scene podcast, co-host David revealed he once bombarded Alesha with flowers before they had even met - hinting he may have been interested in dating her in the past.
"I took a shine to you, which I don't mind saying," David told Alesha. "How could you not take a shine to this woman? We met at Strictly. I took my mum to the Strictly final. I sent Alesha a bunch of flowers to wish her well for the finals. But at that point, I'd never met you. Then our paths crossed..."
Then co-host Matt asked: "Did you ever go on a date?" to which David replied with a joke, stating: "No, she wouldn't go anywhere near me. She's not stupid. No, we're just friends."

Eastenders actor suspended by BBC after making disabled slur

EastEnders actor Jamie Borthwick has been suspended by the BBC after using a disabled slur on the set of Strictly Come Dancing. The 30-year-old star made the offensive comment during filming of the show's Blackpool week last November, according to the Sun on Sunday. He said he was 'deeply sorry for any offence and upset my words and actions have caused'. The BBC said that his language was 'entirely unacceptable and in no way reflects the values or standards we hold and expect' and took the step of suspending him. In video footage obtained by the publication the actor used the term 'm--------s' to describe residents of Blackpool. He was reported to be backstage during rehearsals with Wynne Evans, 53, when he made the comment, leading the opera singer to say: 'Oh my God.' Borthwick, in a statement, said: 'I want to apologise sincerely and wholeheartedly for the words I used in the video showing my reaction to making it through Blackpool week on Strictly. 'I am deeply sorry for any offence and upset my words and actions have caused. It is no excuse, but I did not fully understand the derogatory term I used and its meaning.' Borthwick added that he was 'deeply embarrassed'. Disability charity Scope called on the Eastenders actor to educate himself and reflect on what he had said. Warren Kirwan, the organisation's media manager, said: 'We hope he takes the opportunity to get to know the reality of disabled people's lives.' It comes after Evans was taken off the Strictly tour back in January following claims he made an inappropriate sexual comment. The opera singer was then told that his BBC Radio Wales contract was not being renewed following a four-month investigation. Evans then apologised for language that he called 'inappropriate and unacceptable'. The BBC said Evans was 'not returning to the mid-morning show on BBC Radio Wales and there are currently no plans to work with him'

EastEnders star suspended by BBC after disabled slur on Strictly set

A video emerged of the actor, who plays Jay Brown on the soap, using the term to describe the people of Blackpool, the town where the show was being filmed, The Sun on Sunday first reported. Borthwick is said to have made the offensive remark on a phone video while the Strictly cast were at Blackpool Tower Ballroom last November. A spokesperson for the BBC said: 'This language is entirely unacceptable and in no way reflects the values or standards we hold and expect at the BBC. 'We have robust processes in place for this.' Warren Kirwan, media manager at disability equality charity Scope, said: 'Attitudes and language like this are never acceptable. 'It's not just ignorant and hurtful to disabled people, it has wider consequences. 'Negative attitudes hold disabled people back in all areas of life, from getting a job to shopping on the high street. 'Mr Borthwick needs to reflect on what he said, educate himself and do better. 'We hope he takes the opportunity to get to know the reality of disabled people's lives.' Borthwick won the Strictly 2023 Christmas special with Nancy Xu, and won the best actor gong at the Inside Soap Awards in September that year, with the show recognised with the best storyline for Loving And Losing Lola, about character Lola Pearce-Brown's brain tumour diagnosis. As part of the storyline, Borthwick, as Lola's husband Jay, and Emma Barton, as Honey Mitchell, ran the London Marathon in character in honour of Lola after her death. His suspension comes after Wynne Evans last week said he had been dropped by the BBC, following an apology saying that he used 'inappropriate language' during the launch of the Strictly Come Dancing tour. The Welsh opera singer, 53, known for the insurance advertisements, will no longer be a BBC Radio Wales presenter, he announced on May 30. Earlier this year, he apologised for language that he called 'inappropriate and unacceptable' after The Mail On Sunday reported that Evans was heard making a remark to a woman in a video filmed during the Strictly launch event. It is understood he was given a warning over the remark by tour producers. In January, he said: 'I've agreed with the BBC that I'll take some time out from my radio show and the Strictly Live tour, as well as my other public commitments, to prioritise my wellbeing. 'I am deeply sorry for the pain my inappropriate actions have caused, and plan to take this time for self-reflection. 'Apologies to those I won't get to see at the remaining performances and I'm grateful to my fellow tour gang for all the amazing support they have given me.' The singer, who performed in the 25th anniversary of The Phantom Of The Opera and also won 2023's Celebrity MasterChef, told The Sun on Sunday earlier this month that the Strictly comment was not sexual or directed at one of the female cast but was a nickname for fellow contestant Borthwick. He told the paper: 'I didn't see the statement, Old Spit-roast Boy was a nickname for Jamie Borthwick. I'm not a bad guy, I'm not a misogynist, I'm not any of these things.' Evans added: 'And so I went, 'I'm so sorry'. And that was taken as a formal apology, so the press team issued a statement. I didn't see it. 'When I read the apology within the context of the story as it had been written, I was absolutely horrified.' The Strictly tour saw contestants of the most recent series return to the dancefloor, including Love Island star Tasha Ghouri, actress Sarah Hadland, JLS singer JB Gill, The X Factor winner Shayne Ward and Gladiators star Montell Douglas. They toured the country alongside Strictly judges Shirley Ballas, Anton Du Beke, Craig Revel Horwood and Motsi Mabuse, performing in cities including Birmingham, Sheffield, Newcastle, Liverpool, Leeds, Manchester and London.

EastEnders actor Jamie Borthwick suspended over ableist slur

The EastEnders actor Jamie Borthwick has been suspended by the BBC after using an ableist slur on the set of Strictly Come Dancing. A video emerged of the actor, who plays Jay Brown on the long-running soap, using the term to describe the people of Blackpool, the town where the programme was being filmed, according to the Sun on Sunday. On Saturday, a spokesperson for the BBC said: 'This language is entirely unacceptable and in no way reflects the values or standards we hold and expect at the BBC. We have robust processes in place for this.' Warren Kirwan, media manager at disability equality charity Scope, said: 'Attitudes and language like this are never acceptable. Negative attitudes hold disabled people back in all areas of life, from getting a job to shopping on the high street. 'Mr Borthwick needs to reflect on what he said, educate himself and do better. We hope he takes the opportunity to get to know the reality of disabled people's lives.' Borthwick won the Strictly 2023 Christmas special with Nancy Xu. The 30-year-old took part in the most recent series of Strictly, where he was paired with the professional dancer Michelle Tsiakkas. They were eliminated in week 10, finishing seventh. Borthwick, who joined EastEnders in 2006 and is one of the longest-serving actors on the show, told the Sun on Sunday: 'I want to apologise sincerely and wholeheartedly for the words I used in the video showing my reaction to making it through Blackpool week on Strictly. I am deeply sorry for any offence and upset my words and actions have caused. 'It is no excuse, but I did not fully understand the derogatory term I used and its meaning. That is on me completely. Now I am aware, I am deeply embarrassed to have used the term and directed it in the way I did. It was wrong. 'When I made the video, I was excited and caught up in the moment. Again, that is no excuse. But my regrettable actions are not a true reflection of my views, or who I am. 'I enjoyed every minute of my time in the Blackpool Tower Ballroom and the town itself. The people of Blackpool have always been amazing with the Strictly crew, dancers and cast members. I know they will be again for this year's show and those in years to come. I am truly sorry.' Wynne Evans, who also competed in last year's edition of Strictly, said last week he had been dropped by the BBC, after apologising for using 'inappropriate language' during the launch of the Strictly Come Dancing tour. The Welsh opera singer, 53, will no longer be a BBC Radio Wales presenter, he announced last week. Earlier this year, he apologised for language that he called 'inappropriate and unacceptable' after the Mail on Sunday reported that he was heard making a remark to a woman in a video filmed during the Strictly launch event.
