Michael Tilson Thomas says brain tumor has returned, announces final performances in Miami, San Francisco
Famed conductor and longtime director of the San Francisco Symphony Michael Tilson Thomas announced that his brain tumor has returned and that he is planning to lead his final performance in April.
"My doctors have informed me that the tumor has returned," he said in a statement posted on his website Monday.
Thomas first announced in Aug. 2021 that he had been battling glioblastoma, which required immediate brain surgery.
"The three and a half years since the initial diagnosis have been a special time in my life, filled with friends, family, and music. They have also been challenging," he said, noting a second surgery and additional treatments were also needed.
Thomas said he is continuing to work with the UCSF Brain Tumor Center and said there are treatment options but noted that the "odds are uncertain."
He went on to say that he is planning to wind down his public appearances in the next couple of months.
Thomas is set to lead performances of the New World Symphony in Miami on the weekend of March 29 and 30, followed by performances on April 5 and 6. On April 26, Thomas is set to lead the San Francisco Symphony in a performance celebrating his 80th birthday.
"A 'coda' is a musical element at the end of a composition that brings the whole piece to a conclusion. A coda can vary greatly in length. My life's coda is generous and rich," Thomas said. "Life is precious."
A winner of 12 Grammy awards, Thomas directed the San Francisco Symphony from 1995 to 2020 and co-founded the New World Symphony in 1987.

Emily Eavis reveals Glastonbury capacity cut to avoid overcrowding
Glastonbury organiser Emily Eavis has revealed that the festival sold 'a few thousand' fewer tickets this year in an attempt to reduce overcrowding. Last year, complaints emerged of huge crowds at certain sets to the point that security were forced to shut down entry to more fans. The 2025 event is sold out but apparently will not use its full 210,000 capacity when it takes place at Worthy Farm in Somerset later this month. Speaking to the BBC's Sidetracked podcast, Eavis said she wanted to see if the reduction could 'make an impact on some of the busier times'. 'It'll be interesting to see just how that affects the dynamics on site,' she said of the reduced crowd sizes. Organisers have apparently also created more room at the Other Stage, the festival's second-biggest arena, where Charli XCX will headline on the Saturday night. After the festival bought extra land, there will also be more room at the Shangri-La nightlife area. Eavis said she had held a meeting of around 250 Glastonbury staff and asked whether anyone believed the festival was overcrowded last year – apparently no one put their hand up. 'I was like, [that's] interesting because there's a lot of talk, some people think that it was,' she said. Ticket-holders will also be encouraged to use different routes and make use of the entire site in a bid to ease congestion. Eavis said that the festival's app planner, with which fans can note which artists they want to see, had helped organisers predict which areas were likely to be busiest at specific times. 'The app was really accurate last year. People plan what they're going to see,' she said. 'We can see what they're going to see, which is really useful for us from a crowd perspective.' She revealed that, since the Covid pandemic, people tended to move 'more in a herd' and so her goal was to emphasise that there are 'like 10 routes to anywhere'. This year's festival takes place between Wednesday 25 June to Monday 30 June and will be headlined by The 1975, Neil Young and Olivia Rodrigo. Other artists on the eclectic lineup include Grammy-winning rapper Doechii, rock band Wunderhorse, pop star Charli XCX, singer RAYE, Irish hip-hop trio Kneecap and mysterious band Patchwork.

Taylor Swift's Reputation re-enters Top 5 of Billboard chart
Taylor Swift's Reputation album has re-entered the Top 5 of the Billboard 200 chart after she bought back her masters. The pop megastar recently made a landmark $360 million deal to reclaim the rights to her original master recordings of her first six studio albums. Since the, Swifties have been streaming the 2017 record like crazy, leading to a 1,184 per cent spike in sales in a week, per music data tracker Luminate. The majority of sales are from streaming with an increase of 125 per cent, to 34.75 million on-demand streams. The 14-time Grammy winner shared the news of the sale via a message posted to her official website. She wrote: 'I'm trying to gather my thoughts into something coherent, but right now my mind is just a slideshow." Taylor added: 'A flashback sequence of all the time I daydreamed about, wished for, and pined away for a chance to get to tell this news. 'I almost stopped thinking it could ever happen, after 20 years of having the carrot dangled and then yanked away. But that's all in the past now. I've been bursting into tears of joy at random intervals ever since I found that this is really happening. I really get to say those words. All of the music I've ever made … now belongs… to me.' The 35-year-old singer specified the rights she now owns include her music videos, concert films, unreleased tracks, album art and photography.
