Mehbooba Mufti meets families of civilians killed in Pakistan shelling in Poonch
Srinagar (Jammu and Kashmir) [India] May 14 (ANI): PDP Chief Mehbooba Mufti on Wednesday met families of victims who were killed in Poonch in shelling by Pakistan on unarmed civilians.
Pakistan launched a targeted attack on the Sikh community in Jammu and Kashmir, hitting a Gurdwara in Poonch and the homes of Sikh community members. At least three individuals were killed in that particular attack.
Pakistan's escalatory action, following India's precision strikes under Operation Sindoor, caused huge suffering to civilians in Jammu and Kashmir. Pakistani shelling caused panic among villagers and damaged several houses.
Visuals showed damaged civilian infrastructure, shattered window panes, cracked walls, and debris scattered across the lanes of the village.
Pakistan shelling also targeted a school and two students lost their lives. If there were students inside there could have been a heavy loss of innocent lives.
During heavy shelling across the Line of Control in the early morning of May 7, a shell fired from Pakistan landed just behind the Christ School, run by the Carmelites of Mary Immaculate, a congregation in Poonch.
The shell fired from Pakistan hit the home of two students of the Christ School. Both students unfortunately lost their lives and their parents were severely injured.
Another Pakistani shell struck a Christian Convent of Nuns belonging to the congregation of the Mother of Carmel, damaging water tanks and destroying solar panel infrastructure.
Several priests, nuns, school staff and local residents took refuge in an underground hall beneath the Christ School during the shelling by Pakistan.
President of Poonch District Gurudwara Prabandhak Committee Narinder Singh said on May 7 that Pakistan Army's shelling has caused huge damage in civilian areas of Poonch, leading to several deaths and a shell hit a corner of Shri Guru Singh Sabha Gurudwara,
He said one shell hit Geeta Bhawan and one shell hit a mosque also, killing a teacher in the mosque.
'Our neighbour has no sense at all, has made a huge attack on civilians. Civilians have suffered huge damage,' Narinder Singh said in a self-made video.
He urged the Jammu and Kashmir government and the Centre to make efforts so that situation improves.
Narinder Singh said locals were in panic and many had left their residences.
'Nearly 12 people have died in Poonch district due to cross-border shelling... In Poonch proper five people of the Sikh community and rest from the Muslim community have died. A shell hit one corner of our Gurudwara Shri Guru Singh Sabha, because of which one door and a few glasses were shattered...Since it is a congested area, one shell has hit Geeta Bhawan and one shell hit a mosque also, killing one teacher in the mosque,' Narinder Singh said.
Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader Sukhbir Singh Badal strongly condemned the inhuman attack by Pakistani forces on the sacred Central Gurdwara Sri Guru Singh Sabha Sahib in Poonch.
Condemning the inhuman attack, Badal stated that three Sikhs have lost their lives.
The SAD leader expressed solidarity with the bereaved families and demanded adequate compensation to support them in their time of grief.
'Strongly condemn the inhuman attack by Pakistani forces on the sacred Central Gurdwara Sri Guru Singh Sabha Sahib in Poonch, in which three innocent Gursikhs, including Bhai Amrik Singh Ji (a raagi Singh), Bhai Amarjeet Singh and Bhai Ranjit Singh lost their lives. The Shiromani Akali Dal expresses complete solidarity with the families of the deceased Gursikhs and prays for peace for the departed and courage for their friends and loved ones,' he had said in a post on X.
'We demand that the martyrs be honored for their sacrifice and that the bereaved families receive adequate compensation to support them in their time of grief. The Sikhs have always been, and will continue to be, the sword arm of the country. We stand like a rock with our armed forces. Although the Shiromani Akali Dal and our country stand for peace, if our honor is challenged by the enemy, we need no reminder to fulfill our patriotic duties,' Badal added.
India's precision strikes on terrorist infrastructure came in response to the Pahalgam terror attack in which 26 people were killed. The government had said that the perpetrators will face severe punishment and over 100 terrorists were killed in Operation Sindoor.
Indian Armed Forces effectively repelled Pakistan's subsequent military aggression and pounded several airbases in Pakistan.
The two countries have now reached an understanding to stop firing and military action after Pakistan DGMO reached out to his Indian counterpart. (ANI)

Disputes emerge in Mumbai housing societies over goat sacrifice on Bakri Eid
As Mumbai prepares to celebrate Eid-al-Adha on Saturday, several housing societies in the city are witnessing disputes over permissions to sacrifice al-Adha or Bakri Eid is celebrated by the Muslim community as the festival of sacrifice. On this day, people traditionally sacrifice animals such as goats, sheep, or camels, and distribute the meat among family, friends, and those in issues have arisen following the enforcement of Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) guidelines and growing objections from residents and neighbouring societies. On Thursday, the BMC's P South Ward office revoked the no-objection certificate (NOC) earlier granted to a housing society in Gokuldham, Goregaon East, after receiving objections from nearby civic body cited the presence of another slaughtering location within a 1-kilometre radius as the reason for the Priti Satam, who led a delegation to the BMC, said, 'In Satellite Society, Gokul Dham, permission was given for goat slaughter during Eid in open space. We met the ward officer and told him that you have given permission for slaughter in open space.'She added that the BMC acted according to its guidelines, which prohibit slaughter within 1 km of a religious structure or in an open space. 'We are thankful to BMC for respecting our religious sentiments. Festivals should be celebrated following guidelines,' Satam similar dispute reached the Bombay High Court after BMC denied permission to Maitri Society in Damodar Park, Ghatkopar West. The residents, who have been conducting sacrifices at the same location for years, approached the court. On Friday, the vacation bench directed the society to reapply for permission and instructed the BMC to decide on the application the same Kaif Mujawar, representing Maitri Society residents, said, 'We informed the honourable court that we have been getting permissions at the same location for past many years. Designated place for slaughtering is small and cramped. There is a limitation on number of goats that can be slaughtered there. Court has asked the society to reapply for the permission. We have faith in judiciary. In other cases, as per the guidelines even if there is a mosque nearby, permission is denied. Permissions once given are being revoked under political pressure.'In another case, a senior citizen from Kurla (W) filed a complaint alleging illegal animal slaughter in residential premises in Kurla's Naupada, citing hygiene per High Court directions, the BMC has issued guidelines specifying four categories of places where slaughtering is permitted upon obtaining an NOC — designated marketplaces, community spaces, privately owned premises, and housing if a community slaughtering space, including a religious one, is within 1 km walking distance from a housing society, then the NOC cannot be granted.

Welcoming PM's rail initiative, Mehbooba, Mirwaiz demand prisoners' release, dialogue on Kashmir
Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) president Mehbooba Mufti and Hurriyat chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq on Friday (June 6, 2025) welcomed the rail initiatives inaugurated in Jammu and Kashmir but demanded confidence-building measures by releasing youth and initiating a dialogue on Kashmir. 'If the Prime Minister truly seeks to reduce the 'dil ki doori' (distance of hearts) which he often mentions in his speeches, then humanitarian steps are the real way forward. Train links are welcome, but it is the human links that truly matter and endure,' the Mirwaiz said, while delivering his sermon at the Jama Masjid in Srinagar. Their sons, husbands, fathers and brothers have been incarcerated for years — many without trial — in jails within and outside Jammu and Kashmir. And with each passing day, more of our youth are detained,' the Mirwaiz said. Meanwhile, the Mirwaiz condemned the inhuman killing of 30-year-old Zubair Bhat of Ali Kadal, Srinagar, who was working in New Delhi. 'Zubair's custodial-like death, allegedly at the hands of the Delhi police as claimed by his family, has brought back haunting memories of such deaths and raised serious concerns regarding the safety and security of Kashmiris residing or working in different parts of India,' he said. He said that after the recent Pahalgam incident, Kashmiris across the country were increasingly facing hostility. 'And now, an innocent young trader has been killed in cold blood. How long will this go on?' the Mirwaiz asked. He urged the Government of India and the union territory administration to fulfil their constitutional responsibility and ensure the safety, security, and dignity of all Kashmiri citizens, especially those outside the region. 'The silence and inaction only embolden those targeting Kashmiris,' he said. In a separate statement, Ms. Mufti welcomed the train to Kashmir and termed the project a culmination of what so many governments worked on and capped by the government of Narendra Modi. 'We welcome the train. The work had been on for the past 40 years, ever since Indira Gandhi started the Jammu-Udhampur railway link in 1983. All governments have worked on this project, and Prime Minister Modi has completed it,' she said. Ms. Mufti said she was happy that Mr. Modi had acknowledged the stand taken by the people of Kashmir against terrorism after the Pahalgam attack. She appealed to the Prime Minister to mark the occasion of Id with a humanitarian gesture by ordering the immediate release of prisoners, particularly youth, detained on suspicion or without serious charges. 'Such an act would reflect the essence of this festival, rebuild trust, and demonstrate a commitment to dialogue and reconciliation,' she said. She said prolonged detentions without substantial evidence deepen alienation and hinder peace efforts in Jammu and Kashmir. 'It's important to address the aspirations of the people and foster a future where dignity and fairness prevail,' she said, in her Id message.
