Who Is Ashish Lata Ramgobin, Mahatma Gandhi's Descendant, Jailed For Forgery?
Last Updated:
In a targeted post about US President Donald Trump, Hans Zimmer reflected on the ideas of Mahatma Gandhi.
It has been exactly four years since Ashish Lata Ramgobin, the great-granddaughter of Mahatma Gandhi, was sentenced to seven years in jail. She was found guilty in a Rs 3.22 crore fraud and forgery case by the Durban Specialised Commercial Crime Court. While it has been a long time since the trial took place, the case has once again resurfaced online, grabbing unexpected attention because of Oscar-winning composer Hans Zimmer. But where's the catch?
Zimmer recently took to his Instagram stories and launched a scathing remark on US President Donald Trump. Claiming that the Trump administration is likely to plant violent participants during peaceful protests, Zimmer urged the protesters to follow non-violent methods and sit down on the ground. In the post, the music producer made reference to Gandhi, urging protestors to demonstrate non-violence and maintain peace despite the President's attempts to hamper the situation.
In line with this post, the story of Mahatma Gandhi's great-granddaughter has been making headlines.
The Case Of Mahatma Gandhi's Great-Granddaughter
Daughter of noted human rights activist Ela Gandhi and late Mewa Ramgovind, Lata Ramgobin was accused of duping a businessman named SR Maharaj, who provided her with an advance of Rs 3.22 million for allegedly clearing import and customs duties for a non-existent consignment from India. He was also promised to share the profits.
It was informed that Lata Ramgobin met Maharaj, the director of New Africa Alliance Footwear Distributors, in August 2015. His company was engaged in importing, manufacturing, and selling clothing, linen, and footwear, further also providing finance to other companies on a profit share basis.
After the trial began in 2015, Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi of the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) stated that Lata forged the invoice and the documents to convince potential investors about three containers of linens being shipped from India. Speaking on the case, NPA spokesperson Natasha Kara told PTI that Lata was experiencing financial difficulties in paying for import costs and customs, and she needed the money to clear the goods and the harbour.
'She advised him (Maharaj) that she needed the money. To convince him, she showed him what she claimed was a signed purchase order for the goods. Later that month, she sent time what seemed to be a NetCare invoice and delivery note as proof that the goods were delivered and payment was imminent," she added, further stating that Lata had just sent him a payment confirmation leading to an agreement for a loan; however, Maharaj ended up filing criminal charges after he found a document were fake and NetCare had no arrangements with her.
During the hearing, Lata was also refused permission to appeal both the conviction and the sentence by the court.
Lata Ramgobin was the founder and executive director of the Participative Development Initiative at the NGO International Centre for Non-Violence and was like many other descendants of Gandhi who are also human rights activists. Her mother, Ela Gandhi, was particularly recognised internationally and had received national honours from both India and South Africa.

‘I'm Ready For Lie Detector Test, Are You': KTR Dares Telangana CM Over ACB Summons
Last Updated: KTR said he was summoned by Telangana Anti-Corruption Bureau in connection with the alleged irregularities in the Hyderabad Formula E case. Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) working president KT Rama Rao has hit back at Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy over the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) summons in connection with the alleged irregularities in the Hyderabad Formula E case, demanding a 'lie detector test". KTR has been asked to appear before the ACB at 10 am on Monday. Reacting sharply to the summons, the BRS leader said that the Congress government was trying to divert the attention of the people by keeping them busy with a circus, as they cannot run the government. He said that he was being summoned for the Formula-E case in which Rs 44 crore was transferred from one bank to another, 'and the money was very much in the account of Formula E". He said that, as a law-abiding citizen, he would fully cooperate with the investigation. However, he also took a swipe at the Chief Minister by pointing out that the CM is also being investigated in an ACB case. — KTR (@KTRBRS) June 13, 2025 'However, the same ACB still has a pending case against Revanth Reddy, who was caught red-handed ten years ago in the vote-for-note scam, with a black bag full of currency bundles. Since both of us are facing ACB cases, does this cowardly Chief Minister have the courage and strength to face a live lie detector test in front of a judge and on live television, to prove who is guilty and who is innocent?" he posted on X. He said that he was ready for a lie detector test and asked the Chief Minister if he was, too. 'I am ready for a lie detector test — are you ready, Revanth Reddy? I am directly asking this in front of four crore people of Telangana. On one hand, as a Chief Minister, you shamelessly admit the state treasury is empty due to your bankrupt policies, and on the other hand, you waste public money on unnecessary investigations. Instead, stop the waste and get ready for a lie detector test immediately," he dared Reddy. First Published:

Arunachal declares 2025-35 as 'Decade of Hydro Power'
Itanagar (Arunachal Pradesh), June 14 (ANI): Arunachal Pradesh declared the years 2025-35 as the Decade of Hydro Power, in an effort to harness its significant hydropower potential estimated as 58,000 MW. The decision was taken during the Special Cabinet meeting of the Arunachal Pradesh government held on Friday in presence of Chief Minister Pema Khandu, the Governor and the Deputy Chief Minister. In a press statement of the CMO Arunachal Pradesh said that, during the Decade of Hydro Power, the government aims to undertake strategic policy and governance measures not just to harness the hydropower potential through a judicious mix of mega, large and small hydroelectric projects, but also to create a stable and supportive policy and regulatory framework for the overall development of the industrial ecosystem in the state, both as a source of economic growth and as a means of generating employment and self-employment opportunities for youth of Arunachal Pradesh. 'With around 19 GW of hydropower projects under development with cumulative investments of over Rs 2 lakh crore in the next 10 years, Arunachal Pradesh is estimated to receive annual revenues of Rs 4,525 crore from the sale of free power from HEPs from 2035 onwards. The Cabinet also approved the creation of an escrow account for strategic management and effective utilization of the revenue generated from the proceeds of free power from HEPs. By effective management of these benefits, the state can make strategic and financial decisions about investing in overall development of the state. This initiative will not only streamline financial processes but also ensure that the benefits of Free Power are maximized for the state's long-term sustainable growth and prosperity, ultimately contributing to the realization of its strategic energy goals and the well-being of its citizens,' said in the statement. The Cabinet was briefed on Friday about the strategic and national security significance of the proposed Siang Upper Multipurpose Project (SUMP), declared as 'National Project' by the Government of India in 2008. 'The Cabinet also took note about the concerns expressed by certain sections of people regarding preparation of the Pre- Feasibility Report of the SUMP, and the measures undertaken by the State Government for allaying fears and building consensus amongst likely Project Affected Families (PAFs) regarding this 'National Project,' through regular and detailed interactions with likely PAFs and various interactive meetings held at various levels by the State Government regarding the urgent need for preparation of the PFR for the SUMP,' said in the CMO Arunachal Pradesh statement. 'The Cabinet also re-emphasized the need for continuous engagement by the State Government with PAFs, and for the need to ensure fair, just and equitable compensation and solatium for all likely PAFs, in case construction of the SUMP was found feasible after successful conduct of the PFR. The Cabinet directed the Department of Urban Development for constitution of a New Yingkiong Development Authority and a New Geku Development Authority to enable building future-ready alternate towns. The Cabinet also directed that a Committee be constituted under the chairmanship of the Secretary (Land Management) to examine land and property compensations rates, as well as to suggest the mechanisms to be adopted for designing and implementing a robust Rehabilitation and Resettlement Plan for PAFs,' it stated. The Cabinet also decided to request the Union government to sanction a special development package for the Siang and Upper Siang Districts, including the beneficiary oriented social development for the twin districts. The Cabinet further directed the Public Works Department to initiate survey for a necklace road along the Siang River above the likely submergence area on both banks of River Siang. (ANI)
