CSK's Urvil Patel achieves unique feat during IPL debut against KKR

India Gazette08-05-2025

Kolkata (West Bengal) [India], May 8 (ANI): Chennai Super Kings (CSK) opener Urvil Patel made history on Wednesday as during his first appearance for the five-time champions, he became the Indian batter with highest strike rate in a debut Indian Premier League (IPL) innings, lasting 10 balls or more.
Urvil reached this accomplishment during his side's match against defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at Eden Gardens.
During the game, he made 31 in just 11 balls, with a four, and four sixes. His runs came at a strike rate of 281.82. This included two sixes and a four against Moeen Ali and a six and four against Ravichandran Ashwin, marking his ability against spin.
However, this is the second-highest SR by a batter in his debut IPL innings, with the highest being in the hands of former England batter Luke Wright, who made 34 in 10 balls (with six fours and a six) at a strike rate of 340.00 for Pune Warriors India against Punjab Kings (PBKS) at Mohali in 2013.
Urvil, who represents Gujarat in the domestic circuit, is known for his high intent and explosiveness. Last year, during the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy match against Tripura, the batter star India player Rishabh Pant's record for fastest T20 century by an Indian and overall, second-fastest century in the format, scoring 113* in 35 balls, with seven fours and 12 sixes at a strike rate of 322.86 during a chase of 156 runs.
In 48 T20s, Urvil has made 1,193 runs at an average of 26.51, with a strike rate of 172.15, two centuries and four fifties. His best score is 115*.
After winning the toss, KKR opted to bat first. A second wicket 58-run stand between skipper Ajinkya Rahane (48 in 33 balls, with four boundaries and two sixes) and Sunil Narine (26 in 17 balls, with four boundaries and a six) propelled KKR forward with a fine run-rate.
After that, knocks from Andre Russell (38 in 21 balls, with four boundaries and three sixes) and Manish Pandey (36* in 28 balls, with a four and six) helped KKR reach 179/6 in their 20 overs.
Noor Ahmed (4/31) topped the bowling charts for CSK while Anshul Kambhoj and Ravindra Jadeja got a piece each.
In the run chase, CSK was reduced to 60/5 in 5.2 overs. A counter-attacking 51 from Dewald Brevis (in 25 balls, with four fours and four sixes) and his 67-run stand with Shivam Dube brought back some momentum to the Men in Yellow. Dube (45 in 40 balls, with two fours and three sixes) continued being the aggressor in his 43-run partnership with skipper MS Dhoni, taking CSK to the brink of a win.
However, in a twist, Vaibhav Arora got both Dube and Noor Ahmed in the penultimate over, leaving CSK with eight to get in the final over, with two wickets left.
Dhoni (17* in 18 balls, with a six) pulled off the finish fans wanted from him, tonking Andre Russell for a six on the first ball of the final over and letting Anshul hit the winning runs. CSK finished at 183/8 in 19.4 overs, getting their third win of the season.
Vaibhav Arora leaked runs, but was the pick of the bowlers for KKR with 3/48 in three overs. Varun Chakravarthy (2/18) and Harshit Rana (2/43) were also among the wicket-takers for KKR.
With three wins and nine losses, CSK remains at the bottom of the points table. KKR currently has 11 points, with five wins, six losses, and a no result in 12 matches. Their playoff chances have taken a serious hit as they sit in the sixth spot. (ANI)

Throwback: When Kuldeep Yadav slapped Rinku Singh twice, what actually happened during DC vs KKR IPL match?

What happened after the Delhi Capitals vs Kolkata Knight Riders IPL match on April 29, 2025, sent shockwaves through cricket fans. A month ago, a 9-second clip surfaced showing Kuldeep Yadav slapping Rinku Singh not once, but twice, during what appeared to be a casual conversation. Rinku appeared stunned, even uncomfortable. Almost immediately, social media erupted as fans cried foul. Commentators stayed silent, unsure of what they were seeing. But just one day later, both players took to the KKR's social media to set the record straight. The playful video quickly flipped the script on what millions thought was a serious incident. Caught on camera and misread by millions The drama took place in Delhi's Arun Jaitley Stadium, just after Kolkata secured a 14-run win. Rinku had played a gritty 36-run in 25 balls, contributing to KKR's formidable 204/9 total. As reported by ANI, Kuldeep had meanwhile had a quiet night—no wickets, 27 runs leaked in three overs. After the final ball, Kuldeep and Rinku were seen chatting with teammates. Then, out of nowhere, Kuldeep slapped Rinku. Once. Then again. Rinku's expression shifted. The clip ended abruptly, and without audio for context, it went viral on the internet. Outrage followed as fans blasted Kuldeep's "worst behaviour" while some called for a ban. Others pointed to Rinku's visible discomfort, claiming he looked close to tears. Online threads boiled over with comments like 'Rinku toh rone wala tha' and 'Bhai ka rone jesa muh hogyaa.' KKR responds with a laugh and receipts By the next morning, KKR shut down the firestorm with a perfectly timed Instagram reel. Titled 'Media vs Reality! Gehri Dosti feat. our talented UP boys', the clip showed Kuldeep and Rinku laughing, throwing up the 'love' hand sign, and joyfully teasing each other with 'Kaise hota hai?' as 'Yeh Dosti Hum Nahi Todenge' played in the background. The video ended with old pictures of the two from their domestic cricket days, undeniable proof of their long-standing friendship. As reported by ANI, the pair shrugged off the speculation. The slap? Just a playful jab between old friends. Misread by millions.

Glenn Maxwell emulates Rohit Sharma with superb T20 hundred for Washington Freedom

Australian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell delivered a stunning performance with the bat, smashing an unbeaten 106 off just 49 balls during Washington Freedom's clash against the Los Angeles Knight Riders at the Oakland Coliseum, California, on Wednesday, June 18. It marked his eighth T20 international century, putting him level with some of the game's greats, including Rohit Sharma and Jos in at number six, Maxwell showed no signs of pressure and single-handedly turned the tide in his team's favour, even as the rest of the batting lineup struggled for momentum. His knock featured just two boundaries but an astonishing 13 sixes, as he shifted gears and took full control of the explosive innings evoked memories of his legendary World Cup performance against Afghanistan, where he led a one-man rescue mission en route to Australia lifting the title. With his eighth century in T20 cricket, Maxwell now joins the likes of Rohit Sharma, Jos Buttler, and fellow Australians Aaron Finch, Michael Klinger, and David Warner in a tie for fourth-most T20 centuries. Only Chris Gayle stands ahead by a wide margin, holding the top spot with an incredible 22 heroics set the tone for the second innings, as Washington Freedom's bowlers backed up the performance with a clinical effort. Jack Edwards and Mitchell Owen took three wickets apiece, helping bundle out the Los Angeles Knight Riders for just 95 runs in a one-sided after the match, Maxwell reflected on his innings and acknowledged the support of Head Coach Ricky Ponting, especially after a difficult IPL season earlier in the things don't go your way; you just need time to find your rhythm. I've let Ricky (Ponting) down in a couple of tournaments. I even missed out on playing for Punjab toward the end of the IPL," Maxwell admitted."Playing under Ricky, we hopefully have a chance to add to last year's trophy. We tried to stick to that 6 to 8 metre length. Chopping and changing the bowlers helped as well. Netravalkar did well. Adair did well in his first game. You just have to adapt. The attitude in the group has been outstanding," he Maxwell in red-hot form, Washington Freedom will look to build momentum as they continue their title defense. Their next challenge comes against MI New York on June Watch

Ravi Shastri's India XI vs England: Sudharsan at No. 3, KL-Jaiswal opening duo, Nair returns in post Kohli-Rohit era

Former India coach Ravi Shastri sees Sai Sudharsan in the playing XI and wants him to bat at No. 3 as Team India embarks on a new era. The five-match Test series against England will mark a fresh chapter for the side, with Shubman Gill leading as captain following the Test retirements of batting greats Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. This series will also be India's first assignment in the new World Test Championship cycle. India reached the finals of both the 2019-21 and 2021-23 WTC cycles but fell short on both occasions. 'It would be (Yashasvi) Jaiswal, and with him will be KL. Rahul, because I think this is a big tour for him. He's the most experienced of the batsmen,' Shastri said on the ICC Review. 'He opened last time when India toured England, got a hundred, (and) had a good tour. So I would hope for him to open the innings. 'Three, I'll go with the youngster, Sai Sudharsan. Whatever I've seen of him, he's very impressive. This will be good exposure for him, this tour,' said Shastri. The top three are joined by the new Test skipper at No.4 in Shastri's side, with the 25-year-old Gill taking on the role 32 matches into his red-ball international career. In the middle order, 'In all probability, depending on what current form is, it'll be Karun Nair. He bats at five, it's a long time since he played for India. Six will be (Rishabh) Pant,' he said. 'I think he (Nair) has worked really hard. He's just worked his way back into the side. The number of runs he's got in First-Class cricket is incredible. And I met him during an IPL game. I said, 'don't just bang the door. Just kick it down and make your way in and walk into that side'. And I think he's done just that. Just the number of runs that he's got has made the selectors look in that direction and give him a place,' he added. Speaking of the bowling attack, Shastri is inclined towards Shardul Thakur, who scored a century in the intra-squad match. 'I would go with three fast bowlers, (plus) Shardul Thakur. I know it'll be a tough one between Shardul and Nitish Reddy, but you have to see who bowls how much. If Reddy is going to give you 12, 14 overs, then he might get the nod because of his batting,' said Shastri. 'And the three fast bowlers would be, I would go with Prasid Krishna, I would go with Mohammed Siraj and of course Jasprit Bumrah. In Leeds, if it's overcast and it's cloudy, there might be the temptation of going with the left-armer Ashdeep Singh as well. So it will be Prasid Krishna/Ashdeep but the other two will be Siraj and Bumrah,' he said. The first Test between England and India will be played in Leeds starting from June 20.
