T.N. Tourism Development Corporation registers a five-fold increase in revenue
The revenue of the Tamil Nadu Tourism Development Corporation has increased fivefold — from ₹49.11 crore in 2020-21 to ₹243.31 crore in 2023-24 — the State government said, while highlighting the achievements of the Tourism Department. From May 2021 to January 2025, the Corporation generated a massive revenue of ₹129.28 crore through its 26 hotels, and online booking services for all tours, it said. In Tamil Nadu, foreign tourist arrivals grew from 0.14 million in 2022 to 1.17 million in 2023, and domestic tourist arrivals from 218.58 million in 2022 to 286 million in 2023, according to a statement. Chief Minister M.K. Stalin released the Tamil Nadu Tourism Policy on September 26, 2023 — a first in the State's history. Following this, many tourism development projects were implemented across Tamil Nadu, it said. The release also highlighted various projects implemented since the DMK assumed office in 2021, including the establishment of Keeladi Museum, Jallikattu arena near Alanganallur in Madurai, and the construction of India's first fiberglass sea bridge at Kanniyakumari.

Expert committee to be formed to formulate plan of action for modernising Amaravathi Cooperative Sugar Mill
The announcement on formation of an expert committee for modernisation of the Amaravathi Cooperative Sugar Mill by Chief Minister M.K. Stalin during his recent visit to Udumalpet has been welcomed by cane farmers in the command area in Coimbatore, Tiruppur and Dindigul districts. A proposal readied by the mill management seeking sanction of ₹160 crore by the government for revamp of facilities and replacement of old machinery has been pending for over two years. The old machinery installed in 1955 had worn out and had to be discarded during 2023. The committee will formulate the plan of action for revival of the cane crushing infrastructure. The mill has, for the last couple of years, been extracting rectified spirit and ethanol by sourcing molasses from other mills in the State. The distillery unit in the mill has a capacity to process 100 metric tonnes of molasses per day, generating 225 litres of rectified spirit and 215 litres of ethanol. Sale of rectified spirit was 42.50 lakh litres valued at ₹21.55 crore during 2023-24. During the year, 7.09 lakh litres of ethanol was produced and ₹3.71 crore was realised. It was a quantum jump from 24.40 lakh litres (₹11.60 crore) of rectified spirit, during 2022-23. Ethanol production was high during the year at 15.10 lakh litres valued at ₹7.14 crore). Farmers' associations have been emphasising on revival of cane crushing in the mill, to derive the benefit of highest extent of 11% recovery rate in the western region. The Tamil Nadu Karumbu Vivasayigal Sangam mooted modernisation of the mill with a crushing capacity of 2,500 metric tonnes a day. They are now constrained to transport their produce to other mills. Against this backdrop, farmers have urged the State Government to tap into the utility of the loan scheme of National Cooperative Development Corporation (NCDC) for strengthening of the cooperative sugar mills (CSMs). For the benefit of the cooperative sugar mills, NCDC has reduced its floating rate of interest for term loan to 8.50% under the grant-in-aid scheme of the Ministry of Cooperation. Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) are required to prioritise CSMs participating in ethanol procurement cycles. On March 6, 2025, the Department of Food and Public Distribution, Government of India, issued a Gazette Notification notifying the revised scheme titled 'Scheme for financial assistance to CSMs for converting their existing sugarcane-based feedstock ethanol plants into multi-feedstock-based plants to utilise grains such as maize and damaged foodgrains for enhancing and augmenting ethanol production capacity', exclusively for cooperative sugar mills. Under the scheme, Central Government will bear the interest subvention on the loan availed by them at a rate of either 6% per annum or 50% of the interest rate charged by the lending institution, whichever is lower, for a period of five years, including a one-year moratorium. Cooperative sugar mills availing of the benefit of interest subvention will be prioritised by OMCs for ethanol procurement.

T.N. CM Stalin writes to PM Modi flagging impact of U.S. tariffs on State; seeks relief measures
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin on Saturday (August 16, 2025) wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, highlighting the considerable impact of United States' tariffs on Tamil Nadu, including the threat of layoffs in export-oriented sectors, and urged the Union government to take immediate measures, including providing a special financial relief package to support exporters. 'I wish to bring to your attention a matter of considerable concern to Tamil Nadu, as it faces severe implications due to the current 25% tariff and its potential escalation to 50%,' Mr. Stalin wrote. 'In the last financial year, while 20% of India's total goods exports of $433.6 billion were to the United States, 31% of Tamil Nadu's $52.1 billion goods exports went there. This higher dependency on the U.S. market clearly implies that tariff impact on Tamil Nadu will be disproportionately greater than for most other Indian states. Hence, this tariff has significant implications for Tamil Nadu's manufacturing sector and employment scenario,' he pointed out. 'The most-affected sectors are textiles, apparels, machinery, auto components, gems and jewelry, leather, footwear, marine products, and chemicals. Even more concerning is that all these sectors are labour intensive, wherein any export slowdown will quickly result in mass layoffs,' Mr. Stalin pointed out. Tamil Nadu accounted for 28% of India's textile exports in 2024-2025, the largest contributor among all Indian States. The textile sector employed nearly 75 lakh people and with a 25% tariff and a proposed 50% tariff, an estimated 30 lakh jobs were at immediate risk. 'To mitigate this crisis, it is essential to address structural issues that have long hindered our export competitiveness,' he said. 'In this regard, I had extensive consultations with the industry associations from the affected sectors. Based on these consultations, it is evident that the textile sector urgently needs support in two aspects: correction of the GST inverted duty structure for the man-made fiber value chain, by bringing the entire chain under a 5% GST slab and exemption of import duty on all varieties of cotton,' Mr. Stalin said. In addition, extension of 30% collateral-free loans under the Emergency Credit Line Guarantee Scheme (ECLGS) with a 5% interest subvention and a two-year moratorium on principal repayment, along with enhancing Remission of Duties and Taxes on Exported Products (RoDTEP) benefits to 5%, extending pre- and post-shipment credit to all textile exports, including yarn, have been highlighted as other important steps to strengthen our export competitiveness, he said. 'Similar challenges are being faced by other sectors due to tariff impacts and competitive pressures in global trade,' Mr. Stalin said. 'To provide immediate relief, the Union government needs to consider introducing a special interest subvention scheme for all exporters affected by tariffs to improve liquidity and reduce cost burdens and accelerating Free Trade Agreements (FTAs) and bilateral arrangements to offset high-tariff market risks,' he said. 'Considering the scale of the problem, a special financial relief package including a moratorium on principal repayment, similar to the one implemented during the COVID period is necessary to support our exporters. We look forward to such an initiative at the national level like the one from the Government of Brazil, which has announced tax deferrals and tax credits to exporters,' Mr. Stalin said. Tamil Nadu's thriving manufacturing sector is facing a never seen before crisis, threatening millions of livelihoods across various sectors, he said. and requested the Prime Minister's urgent intervention in this matter, in consultation with the relevant ministries and industry stakeholders. Mr. Stalin assured Tamil Nadu's full cooperation in implementing all necessary measures to navigate this trade predicament.
