James Whale gives update on ‘very difficult' situation amid terminal cancer diagnosis

Yahoo3 days ago

Radio presenter James Whale has said that his situation is 'very, very difficult', after being diagnosed with terminal cancer.
The 74-year-old broadcaster has been living with stage four kidney cancer for the past five years, telling listeners in May that he had stopped treatment and was 'at the end of [his] cancer journey'.
During Friday's (6 June) episode of his series James Whale Unleashed, broadcast on talkRADIO and TalkTV, Whale addressed a guest whose husband had died of cancer.
'Until very recently, everything was quite normal for me, everything was fine, and then you do get to a stage like I am now, and things get to be very, very difficult,' said Whale.
'To anybody else who is in the final stages of cancer, you have my sympathy. I know exactly what you're going through. I do know, I look basically okay, I get told I look OK – it's all make-up.'
Whale has been a fixture of British radio and TV for five decades and was awarded an MBE for his services to broadcasting and to charity in the 2024 New Year Honours List.
He was first diagnosed with cancer in 2000, with treatment requiring him to remove one of his kidneys. Whale's first wife, Melinda Maxted, died of lung cancer in 2018.
In 2020, Whale revealed that his own cancer had returned in his kidney, spine, brain and lungs.
He spoke about his condition last month on air, suggesting that he intended to continue work as a radio and TV host for 'another few months'.
'I'm at the end of my cancer journey,' he said, alongside Talk co-host Ash Gould. 'There is no treatment I can have anymore. I'm hoping to go on for another few months, but as soon as I can't do the show anymore, I won't.'
'I can't tell you how grateful I am to Talk to actually let me on the air and sit next to Ash, which is a real pain in the butt, but I've been doing it for 25 years!'

This Hilarious Prime Video Caper Flips the Script on British Crime Drama

You can't move for hit British crime shows right now. Whether it's Dept. Q or Adolescence on Netflix; MobLand on Paramount Plus; or Slow Horses on Apple TV Plus (even if that one's technically more of a spy show), gritty and binge-worthy content is showing up on the best streaming services, all delivered in a vibrant array of British accents. Deep Cover feels like a real crowd-pleaser. Peter Mountain/Metronome Film But a shift is happening. We're about to enter cozy-crime summer, when the genre will get an injection of lighthearted comedy, largely thanks to the much-anticipated adaptation of Richard Osman's Thursday Murder Club book series, set to land on Netflix this August. In the meantime, Prime Video is getting in there first with Deep Cover -- an action-comedy that flips the British crime script from serious to silly in the best possible way. In the film, which arrives on Prime Video on June 12, an unlikely trio of improv actors, all of differing skill levels, is recruited as undercover police officers and infiltrates London's underworld, theoretically to bust a drug ring. Needless to say, am-dram chaos ensues. Bryce Dallas Howard plays a failed stand-up comic turned improv teacher who ropes her two most hapless students into the gang: a method actor with delusions of grandeur, played by Orlando Bloom, and a nervy IT office nerd, played by Nick Mohammed. Together the three, nicknaming themselves Bonnie, Roach and the Squire, fudge their way through meetings with gangland bosses, each more intimidating than the next, and somehow manage to find friendship and romance along the way. I went to the film's premiere at SXSW London last week and came away convinced that Deep Cover should be at the top of everyone's watch list this weekend. The combination of comedy and action lands it squarely in crowd-pleaser territory, somewhere between Hot Fuzz and The Fall Guy. Of Deep Cover's three stars, it's Mohammed who has the most established comedy chops and gets the biggest laughs (you'll likely know him best as Nathan Shelley in Ted Lasso -- the kit man who defects to become a rival coach). That's not to say Bloom, who steps somewhat out of his comfort zone in this role, and Howard don't also deliver. The chemistry between the three lead characters keeps you rooting for them long after their "yes, and..." improv approach to undercover work seems to be failing them. The film's director, Tom Kingsley, has also worked on the Bafta-winning TV show Stath Lets Flats (available on Max), which is simultaneously the most Greek and most British piece of television you could ever hope to watch, and which I've long been convinced is a work of significant comic genius. Deep Cover has the same echoes of awkward, almost farcical humor, but with an Amazon-size budget behind it. Still, as Kingsley explained during a Q&A following the premiere, the budget was far smaller than anyone might expect for such a production. Bringing in bona fide Hollywood stars Bloom and Johnson attracted more funding, as did Amazon hopping on board. But the film was reportedly made on something of a shoestring by Hollywood standards. Still, it's easy to see where the injection of cash ended up. Deep Cover's action scenes are sometimes outlandishly slapstick, perfectly befitting of the three clowns at their center, and at times so graphic or high octane that they don't always jell with the overall tenor of the film. It's a minor niggle in the scheme of things, and one that shouldn't deter you. For all its silliness and stunts, Deep Cover is ultimately a heartwarming tale about developing adult friendships at that stage in life when you might feel like the moments for such opportunities have passed. If you're looking for something easy and fun to watch this weekend, then look no further.

Movie Review: Can a rom-com be honest about money? Celine Song's smart ‘Materialists' gives it a go

The problem with so many rom-coms — one of the problems, anyway — is how often we're asked to conveniently dismiss our knowledge of life's realities. Particularly economic ones. How does this person live in a spacious, light-filled apartment when they have a beginner's salary, for instance? (In London, or Manhattan!) How can they buy chic designer clothes, or afford those long taxi rides? By this metric alone, Celine Song's 'Materialists' is something else entirely. Song's characters tell us bluntly what their salary is, or how much their apartment costs. Economic reality, in fact, drives the narrative. Still, it's understandable how one can watch the trailer for 'Materialists,' with the starry trio of Dakota Johnson, Pedro Pascal and Chris Evans, and feel a little concerned. Especially if you loved 'Past Lives,' her stunning debut film that explored not only love and longing but the very idea that our romantic choices, right or wrong, bring lifelong consequences. Compared to that soulful film, 'Materialists' looks suspiciously like it could be glossy, superficial and … OK, loads of fun! But perhaps a bit more Bridget Jones than Celine Song. Let's look at the similarities, though. Again, Song is writing about a triangle of a woman and two men, each deserving of our empathy and understanding (no cad-like Hugh Grant character here). And Song, who based 'Past Lives' on an experience she had when contacted by a former love, is again writing what she knows. For six months in New York, while a struggling playwright, she worked for a matchmaking firm. As does Johnson's Lucy, who's good at what she does. Passing a good-looking guy, she stops: 'Hey, are you single?' She offers her card. That man will become a client, and his demands are chilling: at 48, he's ready for a slightly older woman than usual. No, not in her 30s. Even 27 is pushing it. Another man gives the maximum BMI his partner can be. Men are usually the villains here, but women aren't immune to being superficial jerks, either. But Lucy has somehow beaten the odds. Early in the film, she's being feted at the offices of Adore, the firm she works for: Charlotte and Peter are getting married, and it's the NINTH wedding of Lucy's making! Still, there's one woman whose prospects Lucy despairs of. Sophie (a superb Zoe Winters, both vulnerable and dignified) reports having a wonderful time on her date. Lucy, delighted, calls the man, who did not. 'She's 40 and fat,' he says. Lucy promises Sophie that she will soon find and marry the love of her life. But privately to her colleague, she admits there may not be a guy who 'just wants a nice girl.' At Charlotte's wedding, Harry (Pascal), the groom's handsome brother, notices Lucy and starts to flirt. Turns out, he's everything a woman could want: Rich, successful, nice, the right height. To Lucy, he's a 'unicorn' — and an ideal client. Then the cute waiter drops off her favorite drink combo before she can ask: a beer and a Coke. It's John, a former boyfriend. He looks like … well, like Chris Evans. He's scruffy and adorable, but he's a cater waiter and struggling actor. The two had split up years ago, we learn, over money — meaning, his lack thereof. Money, Song points out repeatedly here, is not merely a sideline issue; It's a driving force in relationships, even good, honest ones. Anyone who's ever fought bitterly over money with a loved one can understand this. Many movies seem to think we don't. And so our triangular love story progresses over tricky terrain. (Johnson, Pascal and Evans, expertly cast, all do excellent work). Harry doesn't want to be Lucy's client, he wants HER. 'The math doesn't add up,' she protests. 'I'm the kind of girl you go home with once and never call again.' But Lucy lets herself be wooed — how can she resist a $12 million Tribeca duplex? With those expertly sliced radishes at breakfast? Still, Lucy can't erase John from her mind — mid-30s John who lives in a cramped apartment with roommates who swipe his charger and leave dirty condoms on the floor (Song does not make this cute-funny. It's also sad.) A life Lucy thought she had left. Then there's Sophie. The sharpest scene in the film is a devastating confrontation between Lucy and her trusting client. On a date, something terrible has happened. Is it Lucy's fault that some people are bad humans? No, but it shines a light on a sordid part of the dating world. And it shakes Lucy to the core. Obviously there's a final act here. How Song resolves this particular triangle is certainly different from the resolution in 'Past Lives,' where an Uber car arrived to separate two people we ached to see together, somehow. In 'Materialists,' I confess I found myself wondering if, in the end, Lucy would really make the choice she does — or even if we're supposed to believe it's a final choice. But that doesn't mean the experience rings hollow. A smart rom-com that tries to be honest about life and still leave us smiling — that math seems to add up just fine. 'Materialists,' an A24 release, has been rated R by the Motion Pictire Association 'for language and brief sexual material.' Running time: 116 minutes. Two and a half stars out of four.
