Khawaja Asif slams PTI for 'politicising' Jaffar Express attack
Defence Minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif on Thursday condemned the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) for spreading a "fake narrative" regarding the recent terrorist attack on the Jaffar Express.
Speaking in the National Assembly, Asif accused PTI's social media platforms of misrepresenting the tragic incident and undermining national unity by promoting misinformation.
Asif expressed sorrow over the loss of innocent lives in the attack and criticised PTI for misinterpreting the situation. He specifically pointed out how PTI-affiliated social media accounts falsely claimed that the terrorists had released the hostages, instead of acknowledging the sacrifices made by the armed forces in the rescue operation.
He also accused PTI leaders living abroad of continuing to criticize national institutions while avoiding accountability.
The defence minister referred to PTI's leaders as products of past military regimes, pointing out their support for martial law and constitutional violations in the past.
Khawaja Asif admitted that his party had also supported a military regime in the past but emphasised that they had the decency to acknowledge their past mistakes. He urged all political leaders to learn from historical failures to move the country forward.
Asif condemned PTI's attempts to politicise terrorism and national security, stressing that politics should not come before Pakistan's integrity.
He called on leaders to put aside personal interests and recognise the sacrifices of the armed forces in the fight against terrorism.
The statement comes after security forces carried out a two-day operation to neutralise the terrorists who had hijacked the Jaffar Express.
The ordeal began on Tuesday when separatist militants ambushed the Jaffar Express en route from Quetta to Peshawar, blowing up the railway track and attacking the train with rockets.

The Auditor General's report identified IESCO, LESCO, MEPCO, SEPCO, HESCO, PESCO, QESCO, and TESCO as the key culprits involved in the over billing. While the companies have reportedly claimed to have returned the amount, the audit report clarified that they failed to provide any verifiable evidence supporting their claims. Glacial retreat reaches alarming levels endangering water system: minister
ISLAMABAD: Federal Minister for Planning, Development and Special Initiatives Professor Ahsan Iqbal warned that over the past six decades, the rate of glacial retreat has reached alarming levels, endangering Pakistan's water system, particularly the Indus River Basin. 'Pakistan is home to over 7,000 glaciers, the largest concentration outside the polar regions, which are melting at an unprecedented pace. The Indus River supports 90 percent of Pakistan's agricultural output, and the accelerated glacial melt threatens not only agriculture but also water security, energy generation, and food availability,' the minister said while addressing at a high-level event in Islamabad on climate change, titled 'Practical Action for Environmental Protection: Progress on Climate Change Direction in Pakistan' organised by Climate Adaptation and Resilience (CARE) for South Asia on Tuesday. He said that climate change is no longer a theoretical concern but a harsh and dangerous reality that poses a grave threat to the future of humanity. Recalling the catastrophic floods of 2022, he said that Pakistan has already experienced the devastating effects of climate change, which have inflicted irreparable losses on human lives, the economy, agriculture, and vital infrastructure. The minister pointed out that countries such as Pakistan, which have contributed least to global greenhouse gas emissions, are among the most vulnerable to climate change impacts. 'The annual provision of $100 billion for climate affected countries is not charity, it is a matter of climate justice,' he asserted. He urged that the international community, especially the Global North, must now be held accountable. 'The world has long demanded 'do more' from the Global South; the time has come to demand that the Global North 'do more' for climate justice,' he said. The minister further stated that developed nations must honour their commitments by providing the required financial, technical, and institutional support to climate-vulnerable countries so they can respond effectively to the unfolding crisis. He noted that the present government has taken the challenge of climate change seriously and has made it a central pillar of Pakistan's national planning framework under the '5Es' (Export growth, Environmental sustainability, Energy security, Equity and Empowerment, and E-Pakistan) strategy. Concluding his remarks, the minister called upon the international community to play an active and responsible role in ensuring climate justice and securing a sustainable and safer future for all. Proposed amendment on LGs: NA Secretariat asked to issue reminder to all parliamentary party leaders
ISLAMABAD: A parliamentary body on Tuesday directed the National Assembly Secretariat to issue a reminder to all parliamentary party leaders to submit their opinion on the proposed constitutional amendment aimed at strengthening local governments. The Senate Standing Committee on Law and Justice, which met with MNA Chaudhry Mahmood Bashir Virk in the chair, discussed 'The Constitution (Amendment) Bill, 2025' (Article 140-A) moved by MNA Muhammad Jawed Hanif Khan, seeking to make local government institutions more viable and effective in line with the aspirations of the people of Pakistan. The parliamentary body observed that, in compliance with its previous directions, letters were issued to the provincial governments as well as to the parliamentary leaders of all political parties, seeking their views regarding the proposed amendment in Article 140-A. However, the committee has so far not received a response of any parliamentary leader in this regard. The committee directed the secretariat to issue a reminder to all parliamentary leaders to submit their opinions as soon as possible to proceed further in the matter. The meeting also considered 'The Qanun-e-Shahadat (Amendment) Bill, 2025' moved by MNA Shazia Marri. During detailed deliberations, the mover informed the committee that, in light of the discussions held during the previous meeting, the proposed bill had been redrafted. The revised draft of the bill was placed before the parliamentary body for consideration, she said. The members of the committee observed that, since the bill now contained substantive amendments, it was not feasible to deliberate upon the revised draft without prior examination. Therefore, the committee decided to defer consideration of the bill till its next meeting to allow members sufficient time for a thorough review. The committee also considered the 'Constitution (Amendment) Bill, 2024' (Article 25) moved by MNA Nafeesa Shah and 'The Code of Civil Procedure (Amendment) Bill, 2024' (Section 54-A) moved by MNA Sofia Saeed Shah but due to the non-availability of the movers, the committee decided to defer consideration of both bills to its next meeting, with the observation that no further deferment shall be granted. The committee decided that, in case of continued absence of the movers, the bills shall be taken up and decided upon in absentia. MNAs Zahra Wadood Fatemi, Kiran Haider, Syed Ibrar Ali Shah, Syed Naveed Qamar, Syed Hafeezuddin, Hassan Sabir, Ali Muhammad Khan, Umair Khan Niazi, Changaze Ahmec Khan, Sardar Muhammad Latif Khan Khosa, Aliya Kamran, Shazia Marri, Jawed Hanif Khan, and senior officials of Ministry of Law and Justice attended the meeting.
