Flyadeal launches cabin crew tour guide initiative

Trade Arabia04-05-2025

Flyadeal, the fastest growing airline in the Middle East, has announced a regional first with Saudi cabin crew to be trained as certified tour guides in support of the kingdom's Vision 2030 to build a dynamic tourism industry.
The programme will target 800 crew by 2030 for comprehensive tour guide training in which they will embrace wider learnings of Saudi Arabia's culture and historical attractions.
Upon completion, they will receive a licence as tourism ambassadors enabling them to hone their skills as official guides engaging with passengers, and with visitors in a private capacity.
Over the next few weeks, the Saudi-based airline will open applications for courses specifically designed for Saudi nationals. A training institute accredited to Saudi Arabia's Ministry of Tourism will conduct the courses.
The initiative was announced at Arabian Travel Market (ATM) in Dubai, the region's largest gathering of travel industry professionals from across the Middle East.
Flyadeal promoted several developments at the show including its upcoming summer season flying programme and new year-round destinations.
Steven Greenway, flyadeal Chief Executive Officer, said: 'flyadeal continues to push the boundaries with employee initiatives designed to enhance their personal development and professional skills. This new training programme, the first of its kind in the Middle East, will empower crew and equip them with the skills and confidence to engage with visitors as official tourism ambassadors.
'As licensed tour guides, the beauty of the programme allows our crew to use their new-found skills while interacting with passengers but also harness their experience by taking tourists on guided tours around the wonderful historic sites that the Kingdom is so renowned for.'
To kick-off the programme, flyadeal crew were given a guided tour of the fascinating Dirayah district – the birthplace of Saudi Arabia – in the Kingdom's capital, Riyadh. They explored and learned more about the traditional mud-brick architecture and cultural sites being restored to their former glory, but more importantly gained insights into what it takes to become a certified tour guide.
Massive investment is underway in the Dirayah project being developed as the nation's foremost historical, cultural and lifestyle destination. With Saudi Arabia looking to welcome 150 million domestic and international visitors by 2030 as part of the nation's economic diversification strategy, tourism infrastructure is scaling up across the country.
flyadeal is already playing a key role in national efforts to promote tourism in, and to the Kingdom through an expanding partnership with Saudi Tourism Authority. The airline operates a large domestic network of 18 towns and cities across all national provinces, with a rising international network that currently stands at nine destinations served year-round.
flyadeal's domestic coverage includes Abha, Al Bahah, Al Hofuf, Arar, Bisha, Dammam, Gizan, Gurayat, Hail, Jeddah, Madinah, Najran, Neom, Qassim, Riyadh, Tabuk, Taif and Yanbu with more planned to be introduced during 2025.
The year-round international network currently covers nine destinations. Amman (Jordan), Cairo and Sohag (Egypt), Istanbul (Turkey), Dubai International and Dubai World Central (UAE) and Karachi (Pakistan), with Istanbul Sabiha Gökçen (Turkey) and Alexandria (Egypt) coming online over the next few weeks.
Including summer seasonal services, flyadeal flies to over 30 destinations in Saudi Arabia, Middle East, North Africa, Europe and South Asia.
Network Growth
By 2030, flyadeal expects to triple its network to more than 100 destinations with a fleet also increasing three-fold to over 100 aircraft. flyadeal currently operates 38 Airbus A320 family aircraft on short- and medium-haul routes from bases in Riyadh, Jeddah and Dammam.
With ambitious growth plans that will see flyadeal's size increase three-fold by 2030, the airline is ramping up manpower heavily that will see the number of employees across the business increase from over 1,400 to more than 4,000 within five years.
During ATM, flyadeal highlighted growth of its international network including ramping up capacity to Dubai; expanded operations to Turkey and Egypt; launching Hajj pilgrim flights; and entering long-haul markets from 2027 following a recent order for Airbus A330neo widebody aircraft.

Nearly 2 Million Pilgrims Enter Final Stages of Hajj with Ritual Stoning at Mina

Nearly two million Muslim pilgrims began the final phase of the Hajj pilgrimage on Saturday by performing the symbolic stoning of the devil at Mina. The sacred ritual marks one of the final rites of the pilgrimage before worshippers return to the Grand Mosque in Mecca for the farewell circumambulation, known as Tawaf al-Wada. According to local Saudi media reports monitored by Anadolu Agency, early groups of pilgrims made their way to the Jamarat complex in Mina at dawn, where they participated in the stoning ritual, which symbolizes the rejection of evil. In a statement issued on Saturday, the Saudi Ministry of Interior emphasized the importance of crowd control and safety, urging pilgrims to adhere to designated pathways to and from the Jamarat complex to ensure smooth movement and avoid congestion. The Saudi General Authority for Statistics confirmed that the total number of pilgrims performing Hajj this year — 1446 according to the Islamic calendar — reached 1,673,230. Of those, 1,506,576 arrived from abroad, while 166,654 were domestic pilgrims, including Saudi citizens and residents. This year's turnout mirrors the growing global enthusiasm for the spiritual journey, following last year's figures, where over 1.8 million pilgrims from 200 nations participated in the sacred rites. With meticulous planning, expansive infrastructure, and coordinated efforts by Saudi authorities, the Kingdom continues to deliver a seamless and spiritually enriching Hajj experience, reinforcing its commitment to hosting the Guests of Allah with unwavering dedication.

AI, drones, cameras to keep hajj pilgrims safe

AFP | Mecca Working day and night in front of maps, screens and seemingly endless data, Saudi officials have harnessed artificial intelligence to help manage the million-strong sea of pilgrims during the hajj. The technology has proven pivotal to track the overwhelming amount of footage from more than 15,000 cameras in and around the holy city of Mecca. The systems are tuned to spot abnormal crowd movements or predict bottlenecks in foot traffic -- a potential life-saver at a packed event with a history of deadly stampedes. Software is also used to help guide more than 20,000 buses deployed to transport pilgrims between holy sites during one of the world's biggest annual religious gatherings. It is all part of the tech arsenal that Saudi Arabia is deploying as 1.4 million faithful from across the globe descend on Mecca and its surrounds. 'In our traffic control room, we use specialised cameras that have AI layers to analyse movements, crowded areas' and predict behaviours, said Mohamed Nazier, chief executive officer for the General Transport Centre at the Royal Commission for Mecca. The centre has a main control room in Mecca filled with screens and maps, where staff use high-tech tools including AI for round-the-clock monitoring. About a dozen staff members sit in rows before desktop computers with a large display at the front, zooming in on crowd movements around the holy sites. On hillsides nearby, cameras that resemble little white robots film buildings, roads and pathways along the hajj route, which winds more than 20 kilometres (12 miles) between Mecca and Mount Arafat. Nazier said the constant monitoring is aimed at averting traffic collisions with pedestrians on crowded routes while also making sure there are buses available to minimise walking time in the desert heat. 'Our eye on the ground' With its cutting-edge technology, 'the control room is our eye on the ground,' said Mohammed al-Qarni, who oversees the hajj and the year round umrah pilgrimage at the transport centre. Artificial intelligence helps to determine 'the flow on the (roads to the holy sites), and detects emergency situations even before they occur', he told AFP, adding that the technology can help assess the number of people in a single place. Cameras and AI can estimate if a site has reached maximum capacity, allowing authorities to divert the flow of pilgrims, Qarni said. During the holy month of Ramadan this year, the system spotted when the Grand Mosque had reached full capacity. 'The flow to the Haram (Grand Mosque) was stopped and the process cont rolled,' he said.
