Yankees optimistic Giancarlo Stanton could elbow way into lineup soon

June 5 - Fingers seemingly crossed, New York Yankees manager Aaron Boone implied good news is right around the corner for Giancarlo Stanton. Nearly two weeks after Yankees general manager Brian Cashman said Stanton was "getting really close to doing a rehab assignment," Boone said on Wednesday that Stanton would be in New York and advance to next steps imminently. On May 25, Cashman told MLB Network Radio that Stanton was hitting off of a pitching machine and "doing everything." "I think he was doing baseball activities (but not live at-bats). He's probably headed up here, but I don't know the next step if it's a rehab assignment or what. Hopefully, we'll have that in the next 24 hours," Boone said, pointing to a Thursday update. Boone said he wouldn't "speak too soon" until conferring with the team and Stanton. Sitting in first place in the American League East entering play Thursday, the Yankees are second in baseball in home runs and slugging. Stanton, 35, was placed on 10-day injured list in late March and later transferred to the 60-day IL in May due to right and left elbow epicondylitis, an issue last season that resurfaced before spring training. The 2017 National League MVP with the Miami Marlins and a five-time All-Star, Stanton batted .233 with 27 home runs and 72 RBIs in 114 games last season. In seven seasons with the Yankees, Stanton has belted 162 homers and driven in 431 runs while hitting .241. Calf, hamstring, Achilles and elbow issues have been a roadblock to Stanton's availability. He averaged just 94.7 games per season since joining New York, playing more than 115 games just twice -- the last time occurring in 2021 when he played 139 games. --Field Level Media

Orioles rally past Mariners for 5th straight win

June 5 - Heston Kjerstad's two-run triple in the seventh inning proved decisive as the Baltimore Orioles rallied to defeat the host Seattle Mariners 3-2 Wednesday night. Adley Rutschman homered for the Orioles, who won their season-high fifth straight game and improved to 8-2 over their past 10. Cal Raleigh went 2-for-4 with a double with an RBI and a run scored for the Mariners, who dropped to 3-5 on their nine-game homestand that concludes Thursday. Orioles reliever Yennier Cano (1-4) got the victory and Felix Bautista worked the ninth for his 11th save. Trailing 2-1 in the seventh, Ramon Urias drew a base on balls. With two outs, the Mariners brought in Carlos Vargas (1-4) to face Coby Mayo, but the move backfired as Vargas walked him on four straight pitches. Kjerstad then hit a fly ball that landed just fair down the right-field line and rolled to the wall, scoring both runners. The Mariners had just one hit through the first three innings, a dribbler down the third-base line by Julio Rodriguez in the first, before Raleigh led off the bottom of the fourth with a ground-rule double down the right-field line. Rodriguez blooped a single to center before Randy Arozarena hit a sacrifice fly to the warning track in center to open the scoring. The Orioles tied it on Rutschman's 415-foot blast to right-center with two outs in the sixth. The Mariners regained the lead in the bottom of the inning after Ben Williamson was hit by a pitch and J.P. Crawford walked. Raleigh drove in the run with a liner down the left-field line but was thrown out trying to stretch it into a double. Crawford tried to score on a grounder to shortstop Gunnar Henderson and was originally called safe by home-plate umpire Jeremie Rehak, but Orioles interim manager Tony Mansolino challenged the play and a video review determined catcher Rutschman got the tag down just before Crawford touched the plate. Both starters pitched well, though neither factored into the decision. Orioles lefty Cade Povich allowed two runs on four hits in 5 1/3 innings, with one walk and five strikeouts. Mariners right-hander Emerson Hancock gave up two hits and one run over 5 2/3 innings, with two walks and six strikeouts. --Field Level Media

Star F Hilary Knight signs with expansion Seattle franchise

June 5 - The expansion Seattle franchise of the Professional Women's Hockey League signed legendary forward Hilary Knight to a one-year contract on Wednesday. Knight was left exposed in the expansion draft by the Boston Fleet. Seattle and fellow expansion franchise Vancouver were given a five-day window from June 4-8 to sign a maximum of five players prior to the June 9 zxdraft. Knight, a four-time U.S. Olympian who recently announced her intention to play in the 2026 Games in Milan, tied for the PWHL lead of 29 points (15 goals, 14 assists) in the recently concluded season. It was her second season with the Fleet. "Signing Hilary Knight was an absolute no-brainer -- she's the heartbeat of any team she joins," Seattle general manager Meghan Turner said in a news release. "Her proven leadership and drive, the way she elevates everyone around her, those are qualities you can't teach. "Hilary's not just a game-changer on the ice, she's the kind of person who defines a culture, and we're incredibly proud to have her as the first-ever player to join PWHL Seattle." Knight, who turns 36 in July, has won one Olympic gold medal and three silvers. She had a regulation-time goal when the U.S. famously beat Canada in a shootout to win the 2018 gold medal in South Korea. In the 2022 Olympics, Knight had six goals and four assists. Overall, she has 12 goals and 15 assists in 22 Olympic contests. She also owns a record 15 medals (10 gold, five silver) at the Women's World Championships. The most recent gold came in April. "I'm incredibly proud to be part of bringing professional women's hockey to the Pacific Northwest," Knight said. "Seattle holds a special place in my heart, and I'm beyond excited to join PWHL Seattle in such a storied sports city. I'm grateful to Meghan Turner for believing in me and bringing me on board as part of this new chapter. "To my teammates, the staff, and the fans of Boston --- thank you. The Fleet wasn't just a team, it was home. These past two seasons were some of the most meaningful of my career, and I'll carry those memories with me forever." Across all levels of U.S. national team play, Knight has 161 goals and 125 assists in 243 games. The longtime resident of Sun Valley, Idaho, was a college star at Wisconsin and helped the Badgers win two national championships. The Seattle franchise will play at Climate Pledge Arena, the home of the NHL's Kraken. --Field Level Media
