4 scam warnings issued by the DWP you need to know about

The DWP has issued four separate scam warnings on social media in the last month - here's what we know.
Benefit claimants and pensioners have been told to keep a look out for fraudsters sending texts claiming to work for the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP).
Scammers have been targeting winter fuel payment claimants as well as homeowners who may be eligible for an energy support scheme.
The DWP has issued four warnings on social media in the last month telling people to be aware of the scams, such as text messages from people claiming to work for the DWP.
Here's what you need to know about the scams — and how to stay safe if you receive a suspicious message.
Winter fuel payment scam
One of the most recent scams involves the winter fuel payment.
Perplexed recipients have spoken about receiving texts claiming to be a reminder that they have not yet sent their application for this year's 'winter allowance'.
Hallmarks of the scam include:
A text message claiming to be a worker from the DWP
The text says that the person has not yet submitted their winter fuel allowance payment, and could miss out on £300
Listing a deadline for a response – often the day the message arrives
If you click on the message, it may also ask for your card details and a £1 payment that will be refunded
The DWP has reminded pensioners that winter fuel payments are automatic, and they can report the scam at stopthinkfraud.campaign.gov.uk.
A DWP spokesperson said: 'We never send text messages or emails requesting your bank details for winter fuel payment purposes.
'If you have any doubt whether a text is genuine, forward it to 7726 and you will receive a reply confirming if it's legitimate.'
Energy support scheme
Other people have noticed a text scam that tells people they are eligible for an 'Energy Support Scheme' to help with the high cost of gas and electricity.
It's worth noting that no such scheme exists under this name, although there are some other schemes available, like the warm home discount scheme.
To warn others, some X users have shared some examples of the fraudulent texts they received.
The message contains text similar to this: "You have not yet completed your application for an energy subsidy for 2025. The subsidy is between £200 and £300. Your application has not yet been detected by the system, so please ensure that you submit your application by 10 June. The channel will close after this date and the application will not be processed."
The message then contains a link that is not from a government website.
It continues: "(Once you have received a message from the system, please reply with 'y' and go to this page again, then exit the text message and re-open to activate the link, or copy the link and open it in your browser). Have a great day, DWP."
How do I protect myself from scammers?
Sadly, scams are only growing in sophistication, so it's best to be cautious if you receive a text message or a call from an unrecognised number — or a supposed government department.
Action Fraud, which advises people on how to protect themselves from scammers, has developed a checklist for anyone who has received a random text from an unknown number claiming to be someone else.
Be wary if you see:
an 'irresistible' product offer or prize from a number or company you don't know
an urgent alert about security, for example your bank account details have been compromised
a message about a product or service you haven't purchased or requested
a delivery company demanding you pay a fee before they deliver a parcel
an appeal from a family member asking you to send money
encouragement to click on an unknown link – if you're not sure, visit the organisation's website directly rather than clicking through
a request for you to share personal data
language designed to create a sense of urgency or panic
messages sent outside normal business hours, especially if they're very late at night or very early in the morning
If you've seen something that doesn't feel right:
break the contact – don't reply, click on any links or make any payments
check if it's genuine: contact the person or company directly, using a phone number you already have and know is correct
forward the message for free to 7726 to report it

The 68-year-old, from Liverpool, did not realise the tax on her husband's Ford Kuga would automatically be cancelled when she told government agencies about his death. The government has carried out a consultation on reform of the Single Justice Procedure after a slew of scandals, including almost 60,000 wrongful train fare evasion convictions, as well as harsh penalties handed out to pensioners with dementia, cancer patients, and people with severe health problems for not paying household bills. But the Ministry of Justice has done nothing to change the system in the three months since the consultation closed. The pensioner, in her letter to Bradford magistrates court, set out that the car was registered in her husband's name and was fully taxed until March 31, 2025. 'My husband sadly passed away suddenly on March 9, 2025', she wrote. 'I then completed the tell once portal and did not realise at the time that the car tax would cease at the date of death. 'I thought it would continue until the date it had been paid up until, March 31, 2025. 'Upon trying to transfer the car into my name I could not find the logbook to do so, so I contacted the DVLA who informed me of the form to complete which I done, and as soon as the new ownership come through in my name I made a SORN declaration. 'Since the date of my husband's death the vehicle remained on the roadside and was not driven until I realised it was not taxed, and at that point I arranged for it to be moved on to the driveway and there it remained until it was recently sold. 'There may have been a slight delay in the SORN being made as I myself have been receiving treatment for cancer and have been in and out of hospital. 'At no point have I ever knowingly not paid car tax, it has been an administrative error made in the midst of dealing with cancer treatment and grief at the sudden loss of my husband. 'In addition, my husband has never received any refund of the car tax from the period he passed away, March 9, to the point in which tax was paid, March 31. 'I hope you look upon my case in the sentiment it should be.' The DVLA has called for reform of the Single Justice Procedure, so that all letters of mitigation from defendants are handed to prosecutors before a case goes in front of a magistrate. This change would allow for prosecutors to check if cases are in the public interest in light of information put forward in mitigation. Magistrates themselves say the system is broken, and called for reform more than 16 months ago. But their concerns were not acted upon by the previous Conservative government. Former Lord Chief Justice Lord Thomas expressed disappointment last summer that politicians had not acted already to reform the court system. The Single Justice Procedure was set up in 2015 to deal with low-level offences such as speeding, fare evasion, non-payment of car tax and insurance, and truancy. MPs agreed at the time that magistrates could sit in private to deal with cases instead of open court, with no prosecutor present and convictions being decided on written evidence alone.

Heroic prison officers saved a man's life after he cut his own throat in Barlinnie. Four members of staff rushed to a cell in early 2024, after reports that an inmate had hurt himself. Stewart Anderson, Daniel Broadley, George Dickens and Stephen Fyfe arrived in the room, which was "heavily saturated with blood" after the man injured himself. He also has a kettle of water boiling, which the officers assumed was to either inflict further self-harm or keep them away. Despite the danger, they bravely entered the space and tried to negotiate with the prisoner, who was bleeding heavily. Despite their efforts, the man cut himself a second time, causing the four workers to run closer to him and put pressure on the wounds, while also having to restrain him. "We had to put handcuffs on him because he had slit his throat. "He didn't have a lot of strength but we still had to restrain him. It's something I have never experienced before, having to use handcuffs while also administering life-saving care." To mark the heroic act, Cabinet Secretary for Justice and Home Affairs Angela Constance presented the four employees with Meritorious Conduct Awards. This is the highest honour the prison gives out to staff members who go above and beyond to ensure prisoners' safety. Barlinnie governor, Michael Stoney, said at the short ceremony: "This is the top award, a very rare award, it doesn't happen often. "It should be recognised how weighty it is. It's not one I have encountered before as a governor. "Staff responded without hesitation and regard for their own safety. "The individual was violent and threatening violence. But they knew they had to save this man's life. It was a real and significant attempt to take his own life." "They put aside their own self-interest. "It does show that the prison service has, on the front line, people who keep others in their care safe. "We should recognise that prison officers are changing lives and they saved one in this instance. "Between the four of them, they have more than 60 years of service." Stewart Anderson, who has worked at the Scottish Prison Service (SPS) for 11 years, recalled: "It's difficult because you have to make a judgment call. "He had a sharp item and a kettle that was boiling. He did want to end his own life. "In that moment, you know that you need to do something and you are just hoping you are making the right call." He explained: "It's a delicate balance, you have to be rigid in your discipline but at the same time, you have to have compassion. "If you aren't open with people, you will get absolutely nowhere. The biggest tool we have is speaking to people and building meaningful relationships as quickly as we can. "My responsibility is the staff, making sure that they know they have support. "It does take a toll on everyone." The 34-year-old also said he's grateful for the support from SPS, including their Employee Assistance Program, which helps workers deal with the trauma they experience on the job.
