Car expert explains what speed will trigger a speed camera

However, many drivers are unaware of how speed cameras actually work – with several myths being widely believed across the UK.
Though regardless of how much you know about speed cameras, with speeding fines ranging from fixed penalties to points on your licence and even court appearances the best advice is to not risk it.

Speed cameras work using radar or road markings to monitor a vehicle's speed and capture evidence of any offence.
While older cameras used film, most modern devices are fully digital and can even track your average speed over many miles.
These digital systems record:
In some cases, they even capture a clear image of the driver and passenger.
Contrary to common belief, there's no universal '10% + 2mph' rule baked into law.
Experts from BigWantsYourCar.com explained: ''The idea that you're safe doing 35mph in a 30 zone is one of the biggest myths we hear.
'Technically, you're liable for a fine the moment you go even 1mph over the limit.'
While the National Police Chiefs' Council (NPCC) does recommend a '10% plus 2' margin to allow for officer discretion, this is not a legal threshold and can vary depending on the enforcement area or the officer reviewing the case.
RAC advice adds: 'The law states that you are liable for a speeding fine as soon as you exceed the limit, so if you're doing 31mph in a 30 limit or 71mph on a motorway, you're breaking the law and could receive a fine.
'It is well worth remembering this is totally dependent on the officer who catches the speeder, and it is up to that officer whether to fine the offender or not.
'The best advice is to not speed full stop.'
Here are some other common speed camera myths:
No. There are no laws about visibility, so nothing is stopping an officer from operating in the dark. But they don't often choose to do this and maintain that being visible acts as a deterrent in its own right.
Go Safe Casualty Reduction Officer, Gareth Thomas said: "Legally, we don't have to be visible. I could camouflage myself if I wanted to - but it's all about being fair, education and preventing an accident. Even if I parked my van and went for a walk somewhere, it would deter people from speeding right away."
If drivers choose to flash to warn others about a speed van, they could be in breach of the law. Under section 89 of the Police Act 1997 it is an offence to "wilfully obstruct a constable in the execution of his/her duty".
However, Gareth says while it is an offence, it is very difficult to prove. He said: "It doesn't bother me that people flash to warn them of the speed van - I just want to educate people and the van to act as a speed deterrent."
It all comes down to the circumstances within which you were caught speeding, and how much you were more than the limit. The minimum penalty for being caught speeding on the UK's roads is a £100 fine.
But Gareth explained in some circumstances, police can offer the option of attending a speed awareness course - an alternative to a fine and penalty points. Gareth, said: "An accredited course is far more likely to improve driver behaviour and consequently make our roads safer.
"Courses are available to drivers who respond quickly to the 'notices' and who were driving at no more than 10 per cent, plus 9 mph above the posted speed limit."
So for example, anyone travelling over 86mph on a motorway would not be offered the awareness course. Those who don't have a clean licence at the time of the office, or if you have been on the course in the last three years, it is unlikely you will be offered the awareness course as an option.

'I was told from somebody who has been walking along the path that he had come across them shortly before and they did not appear to be in distress. Bombshell book claims Jeffrey Epstein called Prince Andrew a serial sex addict and said he was kinkier than himself

The explosive claims come alongside fresh allegations about Andrew's conduct on royal tours 'SEX OBSESSED DUKE' Bombshell book claims Jeffrey Epstein called Prince Andrew a serial sex addict and said he was kinkier than himself Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) PRINCE Andrew has been branded a 'serial sex addict' in a bombshell new book — with Jeffrey Epstein reportedly claiming the Duke of York was even kinkier than him. The shocking allegations appear in 'Entitled: The Rise and Fall of the House of York', which the disgraced royal reportedly tried to block. 'From the reports I've got back from the women we've shared, he's the most perverted animal in the bedroom. 'He likes to engage in stuff that's even kinky to me – and I'm the king of kink!' The explosive revelations come alongside fresh allegations about Andrew's conduct on royal tours. A Reuters correspondent reported that, during the King of Thailand's diamond jubilee celebrations in 2006, more than 40 women were taken to Andrew's Bangkok hotel room. 'Often, as soon as one left, another would arrive,' the reporter said. Hotel staff were reportedly stunned that 'more than 10 a day' were going to the Duke's suite. The exposé portrays the 64-year-old royal as a man consumed by sex, with claims from an investigative journalist that he has bedded over a thousand women, ranging from porn stars and actresses to palace staff and bartenders. Prince Andrew has never been more toxic - the public hate him and NONE of the royals back him either One 20-year-old model, who says she twice slept with Andrew before being whisked to Mustique, recalled: 'He wanted me to engage in kinky sexual activity. 'He had no boundaries. He told me he had an open marriage arrangement with his wife. 'After returning to London, I never heard from him again. I felt like he used me for a few days, so he could live his wildest fantasies.' Masseuse Emma Gruenbaum, who worked on him at Royal Lodge, alleged Andrew was a 'constant sex pest,' insisting on being naked for massages and making crude remarks. 'That's just not normal behaviour for a professional sports therapy session," she said. The book also recounts disturbing tales from palace insiders. One former staff member claimed: 'When I started, I was warned to stay away from him. 'He would sometimes enter the staff quarters. 'It seemed everyone was aware of his behaviour, but little was done about it.' From his 'Randy Andy' schoolboy reputation to being accused of bullying aides and humiliating women at society events, Andrew is painted as both sex-obsessed and arrogant. Aides alleged he once had an employee moved because of a mole on his face, while another was sidelined for wearing a nylon tie. 9 Disgraced paedophile Epstein died in prison in 2019 Credit: Splash 9 Prince Andrew with bikini girls as he holidayed on the French Riviera in 2002 Credit: The Mega Agency 9 The Duke of York on holiday in Sardinia in 2010 Credit: MCP 9 The Duke meeting with Thailand's Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra (left) in 2006 Credit: Shutterstock Editorial The York family reportedly tried to block the book, warning contacts not to cooperate and enlisting the Foreign Office to discourage diplomats from speaking. Despite legal threats, the exposé has gone to print — leaving Andrew once again at the centre of a storm of sleaze and scandal. It comes as a top lawyer warned that Andrew may not be in the clear despite the FBI dropping its probe into his ties with Jeffrey Epstein. Spencer Kuvin, who has represented five of Epstein's alleged victims, said the Duke of York, 65, still has reason to worry after six years of avoiding travel abroad for fear of arrest. 'I still don't think Andrew can sleep soundly,' Mr Kuvin said. 'With the quick change of administration or new leadership at the Department of Justice, the investigation could be reopened or continued. 'Andrew needs to visit the US to answer questions from the FBI. Avoiding this merely makes people think he's guilty.' Andrew has always denied claims by Virginia Giuffre that he abused her when she was 17, insisting he never saw or suspected Epstein's crimes. Giuffre died in Australia in April at the age of 41. There is no statute of limitations for federal sex crimes in the US, meaning allegations could be revived at any time. Andrew has not set foot in America since meeting Epstein in New York in 2010.

Police officers told their pay rises as thousands given inflation-busting wage hikes

Police officers across England and Wales will be handed an inflation-busting pay rise to 'ensure they are properly rewarded for their service', the Home Secretary has said Thousands of police officers will see their wages go up after being handed an inflation-busting pay rise. ‌ The government has confirmed a 4.2% pay increase for all police ranks up to chief superintendents in England and Wales - meaning the starting salary for a police constable now will be £31,163. The pay boost will be backed by £120 million in new funding from the Home Office, meaning it will not come out of existing policing budgets. Weighting for London -based police officers will be boosted by 4.2% in response to the "demands placed on officers in the capital", while the Home Office said the rise in pay across the country reflected the "bravery, professionalism and tireless dedication of officers who protect the public". ‌ Amid concerns over rising crime and growing pressures on police, the government has provided funding of up to £1.2 billion to police forces this year, including £200 million to put in place an additional 3,000 neighbourhood police officers by next spring. ‌ Home Secretary Yvette Cooper said: "Our brave police officers work day and night, often making enormous sacrifices, to keep us safe. "This government is proud to back them in doing so and today's pay award is a clear signal of our gratitude, and our determination, to ensure they are properly rewarded for their service. ‌ "Policing is the bedrock of a secure Britain and our Plan for Change. We are committed to investing in the frontline and supporting officers who work every day to tackle crime, keep our streets safe and protect our communities." National Police Chiefs' Council Lead for Pay and Conditions, Assistant Chief Officer Philip Wells, said: 'We are pleased that the pay review body recognised the evidence that was presented by chief constables and the pay award that has been announced today is what we believe our officers deserve and reflects the nature of the work they are required to undertake to keep our streets safe. 'Today, the Home Secretary also announced an extra £120 million towards funding the pay award. With more than 85% of police spend being on pay costs, it is vitally important that additional costs for pay are fully funded if we are to maintain services and be able to continue to invest in areas such as neighbourhood policing and technology.' Under the Neighbourhood Policing Guarantee announced earlier this year, the government has said it will increase the visibility of the police by introducing "named, contactable officers for every neighbourhood", as well as restoring guaranteed police patrols in busy areas at peak times (such as town centres) and create new career pathways through the College of Policing.
