#SHOWBIZ: Alfred Cheung picks Malaysia as second home, impressed by cleanliness

KUALA LUMPUR: Hong Kong filmmaker and actor Alfred Cheung Kin Ting recently enjoyed a holiday in Kuala Lumpur with his niece and a group of friends.
In a Facebook post yesterday Cheung, 68, shared several photos from the trip – including a group photo in front of a mural, two images showcasing his niece's spacious living area and another of the city skyline at night.
He wrote in the caption, "The living room sparkles like a galaxy at night thanks to the window which stretches across the room. It feels like I am surrounded by stars."
Cheung, who has participated in the production of over 80 films, praised Malaysia as an ideal destination for a family getaway.
While the actor sees the country as a promising option for a second home, he is still waiting for the right time to purchase property here.
"Cantonese is widely spoken and prices are attractive. It is indeed a good choice for a second home, but it is still not the right time for me to buy property," he said.
The Z Storm (2014) star also praised Malaysians for their warmth and humility.
"They are easily content and have close-knit family relationships which is something I genuinely envy."
Out of the many things Malaysia has to offer, Cheung said it was the cleanliness that left the biggest impression on him.
He noted that while some toilets may be old, most are "relatively clean and free of stench".
"During my last trip to Cameron Highlands, we stopped for a toilet break. Even though we were in a remote area, the cleanliness stood out – nothing was neglected," he said.

Actor Shaun Chen saves more after moving family from Singapore to Johor

Malaysian actor Shaun Chen revealed in September last year that he had moved his family from Singapore to Johor. Photo: Shaun Chen/Instagram Local actor Shaun Chen made headlines in September last year after revealing that he had relocated his family across the Causeway. The 46-year-old, who's based in Singapore, now reportedly lives in a rented home in Johor with his Malaysian wife Celine and their two daughters – Nellie, nine, and Neia, seven. In a recent interview with actor-host Allan Wu, Chen described the move back to his home country as a 'natural and logical' decision. 'Since we're Malaysians, we have an advantage. We can reduce our living expenses and stay in a bigger home. 'If we had stayed in Singapore, I don't know if I'd ever have a chance to stay in a landed home as I'm not Singaporean,' he said. Chen, who's a permanent resident in Singapore, also cited the rising cost of education and general living expenses in the country as factors behind his family's move to Johor. According to the Mediacorp star, the fees for public school and after-school care for permanent residents in Singapore is on par with the fees for international schools in Malaysia. When asked to estimate how much he's been able to save since relocating, Chen answered that the figure falls between 30% and 50%. Although he now enjoys a more comfortable lifestyle in Malaysia, the actor hasn't ruled out the possibility of living in Singapore again in the future. 'I don't think it's a downgrade. I've upgraded my lifestyle,' he said, before quickly adding, 'But that doesn't mean Singapore isn't good!'

Veterinarian turns marriage reception into a petting zoo

WHAT is a wedding without a feast, well according to Malaysian expectations? Despite living in a melting pot of culture, we can all agree that Malaysians love their feasts, the bigger the better. But sometimes, people decide to do things differently, and the result is jaw-dropping. Recently, a wedding reception grabbed quite the attention for its very unique theme. Apparently, the bride was a veterinarian and the couple just wouldn't do things the conventional way. Lain dari yang lain ni wedding..🤩🤣 dah macam zoo pulak. — ًِ (@bckupacc99) June 9, 2025 The attendees found themselves in a zoo, complete with a massive python slithering about, lesser-sized snakes for necklace, frogs and exotic birds as exhibits. This is one wedding invitation you do not want to miss. Unsurprisingly, netizens were wowed by the very unique theme. Prompted by the video, netizen @naz_frhn12 perhaps jokingly said he wanted to marry a dentist. 'So when I get married, do I need to make an air conditioning expo,' said @Bdk_DenGgi whose profession must be linked to the device. Another netizen who saw the video added that it reminded her of the celebrity Ning Baizura's wedding where there was a goat pen right in the middle of the wedding hall. However, several netizens noted the presence of the snake at the wedding which was a cause for fear. 'I will just eat in the car. I am afraid of snakes,' said @nasrulofkoz while another said he would just greet the bride and groom. Looking at the video, one can only wonder if they served exotic meat for food too. Hilariously, @runrickyrunrun even compared the wedding to the movie Jumanji. For those not in the know, Jumanji is a fantasy adventure film centred around a mysterious and magical board game that brings its jungle-themed hazards to life in the real world. When players roll the dice, they must survive wild animals, natural disasters, and other dangers until the game is completed. Regardless, we can be certain there is nothing life-threatening about this very interesting wedding. On another note, we do hope the animals on exhibit get fed well too, unlike the guests. As for the huge python, we are a little cautious to issue the same statement. —June 11, 2025 Main image: @bckupacc99 (X)

#SHOWBIZ: Shaun Chen: More savings, bigger house behind move to JB from Singapore

KUALA LUMPUR: Singapore-based Malaysian actor Shaun Chen moved back to Malaysia with his family last year. AsiaOne reported yesterday that Shaun, his wife Celine, also Malaysian, and their daughters Nellie, nine, and Neia, seven, have been living in a rented home in Johor Baru's Eco Botanic City since Aug 1. In a recent interview with actor-host Allan Wu on his podcast Call Us Daddy, the 46-year-old actor shared insights into his current lifestyle and the reasons behind the move. As a Malaysian citizen, Shaun explained that returning to the country was a "natural and logical choice", particularly as they have extended family there. He added that the cost of education and general expenditure in Singapore were also significant factors. "So one day I thought, since we already had the plan to make the move, why not make it earlier?" he recounted. His wife, Celine, was supportive and suggested they live in JB so that he could commute to Singapore for work. Shaun cited various pull factors for the move, reiterating that their Malaysian citizenship was the primary reason. "Because we're Malaysians, we have an advantage; we can reduce our living costs and stay in a bigger house," said Shaun, whose hometown is in Negri Sembilan. He added that both he and his wife had lived in larger houses during their upbringing compared to their accommodation in Singapore. "If we stayed in Singapore, I don't know if I'll have a chance to stay in landed property. I don't think so, because I'm not a Singaporean." When asked for a rough estimate of their potential savings, Shaun shared that it would be between "30 per cent and 50 per cent". Despite being comfortable living in Malaysia, he noted during the interview that he does not rule out the possibility of residing in Singapore in the future, for instance, if his children were to study there. "I don't think it's a downgrade; I've upgraded my lifestyle," he quipped, while carefully emphasising: "Doesn't mean living in Singapore is not good." He continued, "I love the Singapore lifestyle, it's just different. Malaysia has a bigger space, and it's my country – that's the main thing." He also estimated that the annual cost of public school fees and after-school care in Singapore for a permanent resident is almost equivalent to an international school education in Malaysia, which costs approximately RM32,000 annually. Following the move, friends began contacting him to inquire about his lifestyle, "as if he were the ambassador for JB". Regarding his commute for shoots in Singapore, Shaun shared that it is typically a 45-minute drive from home, extending to 1.5 hours if there is a traffic jam. While he is accustomed to being recognised by fans both in Singapore and across the Causeway, he acknowledged that Malaysians tend to be more enthusiastic. However, he has a note for fans who spot him in public: he is happy to pose for photographs as long as they ask. "If you ask, I'll definitely say yes; just don't take photos in secret," he said.
