Women's ministry reviewing welfare support for families of FRU officers killed in Perak crash
KUCHING, May 17 — The Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development (KPWKM) is reviewing financial assistance, through the Social Welfare Department (JKM), for the families of nine Federal Reserve Unit (FRU) officers killed in a recent road accident in Perak.
KPWKM Minister Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri said the review would consider support already provided through insurance and police welfare schemes.
'We are looking into what has been given so far. There are insurance payouts and police contributions, and from there, we will assess what more we can provide.
'Generally, we can offer additional support,' she told reporters at today's press conference on the 2025 Nyamai festival.
Nancy added that the ministry has obtained all necessary family information in collaboration with the police and the Home Affairs Ministry.
Deputy Inspector-General of Police Datuk Seri Ayob Khan Mydin Pitchay previously said that the victims' next of kin would receive compensation and financial aid amounting to between RM58,000 and RM269,700, including RM25,000 from the National Heroes and Defence Trust Fund (TAPPN).
The Social Welfare Department (JKM) is also prepared to provide psychological assistance to the families. However, Nancy said counselling would be offered only once families have had time to grieve.
'The sessions will be provided, but for now, we want to give the families space as they are still coping emotionally,' she said.
The crash occurred on May 13, when the FRU truck collided with a lorry carrying gravel stone while the officers returned to Ipoh after completing their duties under 'Op Chariot' in Teluk Intan. Five officers were seriously injured in the incident, while four others sustained minor injuries. — Bernama

The department later said the hazmat squad reported that a neutral reading was recorded from the sewer fluid, and confirmed there were no other hazards. As the sewer line fell under Indah Water Konsortium Sdn Bhd's jurisdiction, the firm will follow up on the matter.

Several video clips on social media have made allegations against city council staff of bribery, abuse of power, extortion and physical threats. PETALING JAYA : The two city councils in Penang have called for action over viral video clips alleging bribery and abuse of power by council staff in dealings with business operators. The Penang island city council called for an investigation into two viral videos alleging bribery for allowing foreign nationals to operate businesses, Bernama reported. The videos, circulated on TikTok, also allege that council enforcement officers applied double standards in their operations. Separately, the Seberang Perai city council said that it has launched an internal investigation into another viral video in which a man alleges that council officers abused their powers at his friend's business premises. The viral video, which runs for two minutes, includes claims of extortion, threats against customers, wrongful detention of foreigners, and even an incident in which a local man was allegedly slapped after being mistaken for a foreign national. The Penang island city council said two videos circulated on TikTok contained 'numerous false and biased claims which amount to slander and misrepresentation of the council'. It called for an investigation by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission. The council said city councillors Tan Soo Siang, R Harikrishnan, Muhammad Khairul Mohd Ali, and Abdul Razak Rahman had also lodged police reports against the person who posted the videos. The Seberang Perai council said an internal investigation has been launched and a meeting held with the business owner involved to gather detailed information about the incident. The council urged the business owner to lodge a report with the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission if there was genuine evidence of corruption involving council staff.

Mother, uncle detained after boy falls to death from 30th floor in Bukit Jalil
KUALA LUMPUR, June 6 — Police have detained the mother and uncle of a four-year-old boy who died after reportedly falling from the 30th floor of an apartment in Bukit Jalil here yesterday. Cheras police chief ACP Aidil Bolhassan said the Indonesian nationals, aged 25 and 27 respectively, have been remanded until today to assist in investigations under Section 31(1) of the Child Act 2001. The boy's father is Malaysian, he said. 'Based on the post-mortem, the child died due to multiple injuries sustained after the fall. The cause that led to the incident is still under investigation,' he said in a statement.
