Rains leave parts of Hyderabad in the dark, residents fume
Hyderabad: Heavy overnight rains on Thursday plunged several parts of Hyderabad into darkness, with widespread power outages reported across the city. By Friday morning, many localities were still without electricity, sparking frustration among residents and raising questions about the city's infrastructure preparedness.
The power supply was reportedly snapped shortly after the downpour began around 10:30 pm. Neighbourhoods, including Moula Ali, Tolichowki, LB Nagar, Masab Tank, Attapur and parts of Secunderabad were among the worst-affected. Many residents woke up on Friday morning to find no updates or timelines from the electricity department regarding restoration.
"We lost power around 10 pm, just as the rain intensified, and there was no sign of restoration even by 11 am," said Sabera Begum, a resident of Attapur.
"We couldn't sleep properly, and it's worse for families with elderly members or children who need constant care."
The outage disrupted daily routines — many office-goers and students struggled with low phone batteries, dead WiFi connections, and no access to fans or geysers. Lavanya, a homemaker from Masab Tank, said, "Power came back briefly around 9 am, but as it began raining again, we lost it within an hour. Is our system so fragile that every time it rains, we're forced to live in the dark?"
In some localities, the outages lasted more than 10 hours, raising concerns about the resilience of the power grid.
Responding to this, Musharraf Ali, chairman of Telangana Southern Power Distribution Company Limited (TSSPDCL), said, "Power was restored in many areas immediately. However, localities where trees fell or feeders were damaged took more time."
He added that a long-term solution is in the works. "We are preparing a detailed project report to take the city's entire overhead electricity infrastructure underground. This will ensure power supply remains unaffected during adverse weather conditions."

Additionally, a speed limit of 50 km/h has been imposed on all vehicles traveling through the affected corridor, in an effort to minimise the risk of accidents during the ongoing downpour. This decision comes in the wake of a red alert issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) for coastal Karnataka, including Dakshina Kannada district. On Friday and Saturday, Mangaluru experienced intense rainfall that submerged several low-lying areas and disrupted daily life. Streets in areas like Car Street, Kottara, Lower Bendur, and near the Pumpwell flyover were flooded, while vehicles were stranded and residents reported rainwater entering homes. Monsoon enters active phase, Konkan gets triple-digit rain
Pune: The monsoon has revived and is likely in its active phase now, IMD said on Saturday, forecasting more rain over the next few days, with chances of light to moderate rainfall in Pune city too till June 17. Parts of Konkan received triple-digit rainfall in the 24 hours ending 8.30am on Saturday, prompting authorities to maintain red alert warnings. Shivajinagar recorded 63.5mm of rainfall during the period, followed by Chinchwad (58mm) and Lavale (51.5mm). Other significant recordings included Magarpatta (43.5mm), Talegaon (42.5mm), Lonavla (39.5mm) and Rajgurunagar (39.5mm). In the Konkan region, Rajapur in Ratnagiri district recorded a 250mm of rainfall, while Kankavli in Sindhudurg district received 100mm. The IMD has warned of heavy to very heavy rainfall at a few places and extremely heavy rainfalls exceeding 200mm at isolated places over south peninsular India and Konkan and Goa till June 16. "The current weather pattern suggests that the monsoon has entered an active phase after a brief lull. Lad visits family of rainfall victim, hands compensation
Hubballi/Belagavi: Labour and district minister Santosh Lad visited the house of Hussainsab Kalas, a resident of Old Hubballi, who lost his life during a recent rainfall, and expressed his condolences to the family on Saturday. Due to heavy rainfall on Wednesday late night, Kalas was washed away in a drain. The body of the deceased was found on Friday. At the same time, Lad distributed a copy of the govt's compensation order of Rs 5 lakh to the family. Speaking to reporters, Lad said that the district received around 60mm of rain in a single day. "People suffered during the torrential rainfall. The accident occurred due to being washed away in the rainwater. Such incidents should not be repeated. Therefore, I have instructed to close the drains wherever they are open. Around 120 houses were damaged in the district. Two people died in the district due to rain. Compensation will be provided for the damaged houses as per the govt order," he said. Lad said that a DPR was prepared for Bennihalla and Tuparihalla project.
