Corentin Martins appointed new coach of Madagascar
Former French international footballer, Corentin Martins was appointed as the head coach of Madagascar on Thursday, 30 January.
His main goal: to qualify the Barea for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. "The objectives are short-term. Because I have signed a one-year contract with the national team," he clarified during his press conference.
A distant but achievable dream:
Presented at the Barea Stadium in Antananarivo, Martins expressed his wish, saying: "We will try to achieve this goal that seems unimaginable, to take Madagascar to the World Cup." After four matches in Group I of the qualifiers, Madagascar is in 3rd place, two points behind the Comoros.
No stranger to African football:
At 55 years old, Corentin Martins is well-acquainted with African football. He has previously coached Libya and, most notably, Mauritania, leading them to two consecutive TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations appearances (2019 and 2021).
More recently, he has managed two clubs in Algeria, CR Belouizdad as well as Paradou AC.

The decision to award the rights to Saudi Arabia and Qatar comes after Iraq confirmed earlier this week that they had bid to host one of the groups. Teams will be divided into two groups of three nations and the winners of each will join Japan, Australia, Iran, Uzbekistan, South Korea and Jordan in qualifying for the newly-expanded 48-nation finals from the continental preliminaries. Games will be played across three match days from Oct. 8 to 14. The runners-up in each group will advance to a playoff in November, with the winners of that clash featuring in an intercontinental playoff tournament in March to determine the two remaining World Cup spots. The six competing nations qualified for the fourth phase by finishing either third or fourth in their respective groups in the third round of qualifying, which was completed on Tuesday.

The level of competitiveness had never been so high, stadium attendance so strong, nor media interest so significant. It was also the first time the tournament welcomed twelve teams, allowing new champions, finalists, and semi-finalists to emerge. It's concrete proof that women's football in Africa is progressing and that our national teams are gaining strength. Above all, it shows that with rigorous planning and targeted investment, our continent can host world-class events and inspire a whole generation. What initiatives are planned for the 2024 edition?The tournament will include long-term development initiatives. These include a workshop focused on players in partnership with FIFPro, as well as a full technical study on the evolution of tactical and technical aspects in participating teams' gameplay. The goal is clear: to strengthen the women's football ecosystem, develop skills, and lay solid foundations for the future. Where does Women's Football in Africa stand on the global stage today?Our football is on the rise. Our teams have proven their talent, resilience, and determination in recent FIFA competitions. Africa is now being taken seriously. But there's still work to do. We must keep investing, structuring, and professionalizing. We must ensure fair access to opportunities for all. Looking ahead to upcoming U-20, U-17 World Cups and club competitions, we're eager to see how far our teams can go. Australian Referee Crew to Officiate Al Ahly vs Inter Miami in Club World Cup Opener
