Former Algerian International Djamel Menad Dies Aged 64

Former Algeria forward Djamel Menad has died aged 64 following a short illness, his ex-club JS Kabylie announced on Saturday. "The wider Algerian football family and JS Kabylie are in mourning following the announcement of the death of Djamel Menad, a former player and true legend of football in the country," JS Kabylie wrote on social media. "In recent weeks, the health of the former center-forward of the Algerian national team had deteriorated rapidly as a result of a devastating illness that struck him around two months ago," indicated news website TSA. Menad died in a clinic in Algiers where he had been hospitalized on March 14, after returning from Brussels where he had been receiving treatment for a month, reported Algerian football media DZfoot. Born on July 22, 1960 in the town of El Bayadh, Menad represented his country 79 times, scoring 25 goals, over a 15-year international career. Menad's efforts in helping Algeria reach the 1986 World Cup in Mexico resulted in him being named Algerian sportsman of the year in 1985. He was notably top scorer at the 1990 Africa Cup of Nations, with four goals in five appearances as Algeria claimed the trophy on home soil. Over his club career, Menad played for Algerian sides JS Kabylie, CR Belouizdad and USM Alger. He also played in Europe for French club Nimes, as well as Portuguese sides Famalicao and Belenenses. Menad moved into coaching after his playing career and was most recently sporting director at JS Kabylie.

Mouloudia Club crowned Algerian Super Cup winners

Mouloudia Club of Oujda were crowned in the Algerian Super Cup winners after beating neighbours CR Belouizdad at the Stade du 5 Juillet. Mouloudia won the fourth Super Cup in its history, winning on penalties (4-3) after a 2-2 draw, at the end of a spectacular match at a packed stadium. CR Belouizdad (two titles) missed the opportunity to catch up with its rival in the list of winners of this event. The Mouloudia players started the game at an infernal pace, scoring two goals in the first half hour of play. Sofiane Bayazid opened the scoring in the 14th minute from the penalty spot. Mouloudia captain Ayoub Abdellaoui scored the second goal in the 27th minute of the match, giving his team a two-goal lead at half-time. The new coach of Belouizdad, Sead Ramovic returned from the break with a completely transformed team that managed to come back from the two goals in the second half. Aymen Mahious reduced the score in the 72nd minute thanks to a penalty awarded by the referee after consulting the VAR. The Algerian striker then scored twice and restored the balance in the 88th minute, thanks to a furious header that deceived the defense and the Mouloudia goalkeeper. The fate of the match was decided on penalties, an event that smiled on Mouloudia, who won 4-3. Mouloudia of Algiers won its second trophy of the 2024-25 season after winning the Algerian Championship. They still have one last chance at the title, with the TotalEnergies CAF Champions League, which they have not won since their only title in 1976.

Corentin Martins appointed new coach of Madagascar

Former French international footballer, Corentin Martins was appointed as the head coach of Madagascar on Thursday, 30 January. His main goal: to qualify the Barea for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. "The objectives are short-term. Because I have signed a one-year contract with the national team," he clarified during his press conference. A distant but achievable dream: Presented at the Barea Stadium in Antananarivo, Martins expressed his wish, saying: "We will try to achieve this goal that seems unimaginable, to take Madagascar to the World Cup." After four matches in Group I of the qualifiers, Madagascar is in 3rd place, two points behind the Comoros. No stranger to African football: At 55 years old, Corentin Martins is well-acquainted with African football. He has previously coached Libya and, most notably, Mauritania, leading them to two consecutive TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations appearances (2019 and 2021). More recently, he has managed two clubs in Algeria, CR Belouizdad as well as Paradou AC.
