Bafana Bafana turn on the heat in chilly Bloemfontein to reach the COSAFA Cup final

Vela Khumalo South African coach Vela Khumalo praised Bafana Bafana's proactive strategy, emphasising the importance of setting the tone with an early goal.
On a chilly Bloemfontein evening, South Africa's Bafana Bafana turned on the heat to defeat Comoros 3-1 in their COSAFA Cup semi-final at Free State Stadium on Friday night.
The outcome means Bafana Bafana have advanced to Sunday's final and will play defending champions Angola, who defeated Madagascar 4-1 in the other semi-final on Friday.
After the match, South Africa's coach Vela Khumalo praised his team's proactive strategy, emphasising the importance of setting the tone with an early goal.
Khumalo revealed that the team's approach against Comoros was clear from the first whistle: get an early goal and set the tone.
The plan was to start with energy and intent, applying pressure and making sure South Africa didn't leave anything to chance.
'We said we are going to play with two (number) 10s. We are going to play with one top man (striker), and we wanted to end the goal leaks so that we can unsettle them and open them up," said Khumalo.
"If you look at the teams that we have been playing against, they sit back and then they catch us on set-plays and start a (counter-attack) situation.
'So, in this case, what we said was that let's have a quick goal, let's unsettle them, let's play the ball behind them, but let's draw them in because they were marking us tightly.
"Once we managed to draw them in, we attacked with our lone striker. It has worked for us, and I'm happy that we scored the goals that we needed this time around.'
With this victory, South Africa will face Angola, brimming with confidence from their performance against Comoros, as they set out to pursue the ultimate glory in front of their fans.

A win for more than just South African cricket

Unadulterated joy. Administrators sharing hugs with players and coaches on the outfield at Lord's. Ex-captains embraced players from the current generation. There were tears. Lot's of tears. 'This is so, so big. There's been so much pain,' said Mohammed Moosajee, Cricket SA's vice-president and for almost two decades the Proteas team manager. 'All those World Cups, all that pain, this all worth it.' 'We've got one, we've got it,' said the organisation's CEO Pholetisi Moseki, who hugged everyone in sight. As Kyle Verreynne and David Bedingham knocked off the last six runs, Graeme Smith, came down to the boundary edge and fist-pumped for a group of South Africa spectators. Shaun Pollock received a standing ovation from the vast swathes of green and gold clad supporters in the Mound Stand. A 𝐌𝐀𝐆𝐈𝐂𝐀𝐋 𝐌𝐎𝐌𝐄𝐍𝐓 for South African sport 🥳🇿🇦 #SSCricket | #WTC25 — SuperSport 🏆 (@SuperSportTV) June 14, 2025 Jerusalema blared from the speakers at Lord's, followed by Nkalakatha. It felt like South Africa had finally taken over cricket. It's been a long and painful road, littered with miss-steps. Some small, too many big — both on the field and especially off it. Cricket SA's focus, which for too many administrators over the years, has been inward-looking, for now has tangible evidence of the work done — mainly by players and coaches — since the dark days of 2019. For the administrators on the Lord's outfield, it is again the players who have set the example. South Africa's victory held huge importance for the international game too. Much was made of South Afreica's path to the final and that they didn't face Australia or England. But with a calendar dominated by the Big Three, especially in Tests, this success offered a reminder of what the rest of the world has to offer. "𝐎𝐇𝐇𝐇 𝐓𝐄𝐌𝐁𝐀 𝐁𝐀𝐕𝐔𝐌𝐀!" 🥳🎶 #SSCricket | #WTC25 — SuperSport 🏆 (@SuperSportTV) June 14, 2025 'I think this is inspiring from a lot of angles,' said Temba Bavuma. 'I know that a lot of the other nations, the so-called smaller nations, would have been supporting us in our quest. As a team, our responsibility is always to be as competitive as possible. 'We want to play more, we want to play more Test cricket and we want to play against the bigger nations.' "They always know better than the coaches anyway." 🤣❤️ There's something special about this @ProteasMenCSA outfit 🙌 #SSCricket | #WTC25 — SuperSport 🏆 (@SuperSportTV) June 14, 2025 The 2027 World Cup is a major goal for the Proteas, and while this triumph was in a different format, it marks an important step on that journey. 'Hopefully this is the start of winning more trophies for the team,' Bavuma said. 'Next year, the guys go to the T20 World Cup, so Aiden and his boys, we will be supporting them to follow suit. But that 2027 World Cup, a lot of us want to be there.' 'We need to be fit to be there first. I'll definitely be putting up my hand to be a part of that group.' More than six hours after the winning runs were hit, the entire squad returned to the middle of Lord's to sing the team song. 'TO THE TEAM,' they screamed. 'TO THE TEAM…..PROTEEEAAAS!'

Jake White confirms Jan Serfontein's Bulls return as Handré Pollard and Co to mount fresh URC title bid

Centre Jan Serfontein will return to the Bulls next season after leaving Pretoria in 2017. Photo: BackpagePix Image: BackpagePix In the aftermath of the 32-7 drilling at the hands of Leinster, Bulls coach Jake White was beating his 'Bring the Boks home' drum once more – and the Pretoria side will be getting their fair share next season. White admitted that the Bulls were utterly outplayed by the streetwise Dublin outfit in the United Rugby Championship final at Croke Park on Saturday evening. But the former Springbok coach again reiterated the gulf in class between the two sides, with the Irish province boasting several top-class Test players in their line-up – including Springbok giant RG Snyman and All Black star Jordie Barrett – and that not even losing scrumhalf Jamison Gibson-Park on match-day made a material difference to their performance. White said that he wasn't less disappointed about seeing the Bulls lose their third URC final in four seasons compared to the previous title deciders against the Stormers in 2022 and Glasgow last year. But to compete on an equal footing, he voiced his oft-stated view about having the best Springboks playing for South African franchises. In that regard, White confirmed a well-known secret that former Bulls centre Jan Serfontein will be returning to Loftus Versfeld next season after a number of years at Montpellier. Previously, the Bulls had announced that Bok stalwart flyhalf Handré Pollard will be back in Pretoria on July 1 to spearhead a fresh URC title challenge. 'I would like everyone to understand it. Just because you go to the dance doesn't mean you're going to get the main dance every time either,' the 61-year-old mentor said. Video Player is loading. Advertisement Next Stay Close ✕ Ad loading 'And playing in three finals doesn't give you the right to win it. And there will always be opportunities. When I looked back at last year's final, there were chances. 'In the first final, we were very, very young and very new. And now we played against a really good, well-balanced, oiled side. 'So, there's going to be new challenges next year again. And I need to sit with those decision-makers and just find out what we need in order to step up. 'Next year, we signed Handré Pollard. He's coming as a 10. Signed Jan Serfontein, who's a real young prodigy that was at Montpellier. 'And then again, it's two really good signings: Paul de Wet, the scrumhalf from the Stormers, who's coming to join us, and Nicolas Janse van Rensburg, who's a lock-flanker, who's played at Montpellier and has played Springbok rugby as well. 'I'm not for one minute saying that's going to solve it, but we're going to have to have a look and see what else we need in order for our team to go to the next level. 'Because there's no doubt that Leinster won't come backwards: Leinster will continue going forwards. 'And that's why we're going to have to find a way. If we're going to win this competition in the next couple of years, we're going to have to beat Leinster. There's no doubt in my mind about that. 'It's just by chance they haven't been in the finals in the last four years. Just by chance. And I'll say it again: no other team has played them with their full-strength team at home in a knockout game.' White added that he was going on holiday now, but he will have plenty to ponder on over the next few weeks before pre-season starts for the Bulls' next URC campaign, which starts on September 27 against the Ospreys at Loftus Versfeld. A number of the Bulls squad will be joining the Springboks now for the international season, including Pollard, Kurt-Lee Arendse, Wilco Louw, Ruan Nortjé, Marco van Staden, Jan-Hendrik Wessels, Cobus Wiese, Willie le Roux and Canan Moodie, while injured loose forwards Cameron Hanekom and Elrigh Louw are out for the rest of this year. 'Even though it's straight after the game, the lesson I've taken from that is the one I've been telling you: we need more international players to play in our province,' White said. 'I need what Leinster have. I need to be able to fight fire with fire. And that's not going to change. I mean, I'm going to ask you a question: Leinster-Toulouse, Leinster-La Rochelle: What do you think you need to win those games? Academy players or seasoned internationals? 'I think the biggest cheer tonight was for Jordie Barrett: he's not Irish. So please, don't take it the wrong way. 'That's what I'd love to get. I'd love to be able to sit in a coach's box and 19-0 up, say 'RG (Snyman), warm up', and put him on and let him menace the defence like he did tonight. 'Even though you know he's going to do it, he still does it. So, it's irrelevant, you know, asking me... That has been from the day I took over this job. You know, I keep banging the same drum, guys. 'If you're playing against 23 internationals, and I think today you guys, you were short, you only had 22... I mean, there's a complete another difference. As I said, I watched that show the other night against the head. 'Now you guys are, I say it over and over, you're the benchmark of what clubs are trying to achieve. You've got international coaches. You've got foreigners that come in, and they take your team to another level. 'I'll say it again: I'm envious, really envious, because if you're going to fight fire with fire, then you want to go to a gunfight – you can't go with a knife. 'I'm less gutted because I think people are so naive... I mean, I don't know what's changed? 'From first year to now, we played Leinster when we lost 31-3 at the Aviva Stadium. And what's changed? What do you think's changed for us? So, we've got four years older and believe it or not, they've got four years older. 'So, yeah, I mean, I'm not less gutted. And I think obviously when you lose a final, but I'm also just completely and utterly realistic. 'And I'm more frustrated, because I knew it's like watching a horror movie and you think the ending is going to be different. 'I've coached the Brumbies to beat the British and Irish Lions. The way you do that is you actually need the big sides to play badly. 'So, dreamers are guys that think you take youngsters and you just wave a wand and you beat international players. 'I think sometimes the problem is you guys (the media) take it the wrong way. 'You're in a dream world if you think that a club team that's made up of... I counted, we had eight guys who weren't internationals finishing off the game. 'How do you expect eight non-international players who've just come into the club and they play provincial rugby, to beat Ireland? 'So, I'm not less gutted. But I'm just more, I suppose, maybe more frustrated. 'Maybe I'm going to have to rethink about where we are as a group, and what we can do. 'And I can only control the controllables. We can make guys a year older. That's also why I put all those guys on. 'Nobody in this competition has played Leinster with their full-strength team in a final since we've been playing. Nobody. 'So, I'm sure every other coach that caught this team, any other team caught this team today in the URC would have exactly gone through what we went through today. Any other of those 15 teams.'

Proteas Test victory: AB, Rassie and Rory celebrate with South Africa

In a thrilling final played at Lord's the South Africans shocked the favourites, Australia, to win their first major trophy in several years. Temba Bavuma of South Africa celebrates with the trophy after winning the Test final at Lord's on Saturday. Picture: Paul Harding/Gallo Images Former South African great AB de Villiers, who watched all four days of the World Test Championship final at Lord's in London over the last few days, has congratulated Temba Bavuma and his Proteas team following their stunning five-wicket win on Saturday against Australia. The victory in the ICC Test final secured South Africa's senior men's team their first major trophy in 27 years. Their last major win was back in 1998 when they captured the Champions Trophy. But it wasn't only cricketers, past and present, who expressed their joy of the victory on social media, but Proteas fans from all walks of life. 'Fantastic win' De Villiers, who captained the Proteas in his day and experienced plenty of heartache in a number of World Cup events, in T20 and ODI cricket, was as happy as every other South African cricket fan on Saturday. 'Congratulations Proteas,' said De Villiers in a post on Facebook. 'Fantastic win and wo well played. Hats off to Markram for that match winning century, and Temba for leading with such ice and fire all through. 'What an incredible experience of watching this beautiful format of the game! The built up drama, the slow anticipation, and the sweet victory to end it all were moments to savour … and to experience that with my two boys thrilled and on their toes — couldn't have imagined it better than this. Go Proteas!' Markram scored an excellent second innings 136 to help guide his team to victory on Saturday and he was well supported by Bavuma who contributed 66 crucial runs in the innings. Records for Proteas The Proteas' successful chase of 282 was the joint second highest fourth innings chase at Lord's. It was also South Africa's first chase of 250-plus runs in the fourth innings since 2008. Bavuma is also now unbeaten in 10 Tests as captain, while the victory was the team's eighth straight win in the format, the second longest streak in SA history. Rassie and Co also full of praise Springbok World Cup-winning coach Rassie Erasmus was also an excited cricket fan on Saturday, congratulating coach Shukri Conrad, who he met up with before the Test final, and the Proteas team. 'Jaaaaa man coach Shukz and Proteas! So proud, Lekka,' said Erasmus is a post on X. Jaaaaa man coach Shukz and @ProteasMenCSA ! So proud Lekka 🇿🇦🇿🇦 — Johan Erasmus (@RassieRugby) June 14, 2025 President Cyril Ramaphosa was also thrilled with the result, congratulating the team and captain Bavuma. He said the win was 'for the nation'. Congratulations to the Proteas the ICC Test Champions . We are proud of Captain Themba Bavuma for leading from the front. A victory for you and for the nation. #WtcFinal2025 — Cyril Ramaphosa 🇿🇦 (@CyrilRamaphosa) June 14, 2025 Sports minister Gayton McKenzie said 'he couldn't contain his excitement' and posted several messages on X, congratulating the team, and he had a few special words for Bavuma, too. From dreaming in the dusty streets of Langa to holding the mace at Lord's, Temba Bavuma reminded SA today to never be told we are not tall enough, not rich enough, not talented enough. As long as we are brave enough. 9 wins later, 10 unbeaten, you have reminded us all to believe — Gayton McKenzie (@GaytonMcK) June 14, 2025 After all the decades of pain and suffering in all the knockout matches that didn't work out, today the Proteas Men have won a major ICC final, and proven SA just can't stop winning! What a moment, what a team, and what a country. Against the odds, we are the Champions! 🇿🇦🔥🔥🔥 June 14, 2025 Words of congratulations for the Proteas and Bavuma were seen across all social media platforms from all over the world late Saturday and into Sunday. Several current and former players expressed their good feelings for the South Africans, among them Dale Steyn, Matthew Hayden, Orlando Pirates, several other local football, rugby and cricket clubs, and also former SA captain Faf du Plessis, who is currently playing in a T20 competition in the USA. Wow amazing to wake up to the Proteas winning the test championship final. Well done @TembaBavuma and the team for an incredible win . So radiculous proud !!!🇿🇦🇿🇦🇿🇦 — Faf Du Plessis (@faf1307) June 14, 2025 Comedian Rory Petzer, who is popularly known as the 'minister of champions' also hailed the team in his own unique manner.
