Delap, 22, has joined the Blues on a six-year contract after his release clause was met following Ipswich's relegation to the Championship. The centre-forward emerged as Enzo Maresca's preferred attacking target after netting 12 Premier League goals for the Tractor Boys. Their time together at Manchester City also played a pivotal role in Delap's decision to snub fellow suitors United. Today, 18:33 By Nyle Smith Welcome to Chelsea's Club World Cup opener Chelsea kickstart their Club World Cup campaign against MLS heavyweights LA FC tonight - and SunSport will be all over it! Enzo Maresca's men face a tricky test against former Chelsea hero Olivier Giroud in Atlanta, Georgia — where temperatures could hit a sticky 30 degrees celsius. But with an even tougher fixture on the horizon against Brazilian giants Flamengo, today's match could provide opportunities for some new faces. Chelsea have taken no less than 28 players to the States, with Conference League winners like Cole Palmer, Enzo Fernandez and Reece James included. Promising youngsters such as Tyrique George, Marc Guiu and Josh Acheampong have also travelled. However, there could be as many as six debutants tonight in scenes bound to excite Blues fans. And should they all feature on the pitch at the same time, they would create a new spine to mark the latest point of Chelsea's fast-paced revolution.

Chelsea kick-off their Club World Cup campaign with painful introductions in front of a half-empty stadium as fans cringe on social media
Chelsea kicked off their Club World Cup campaign to all the glitz and glamour you would expect of an tournament in America... but very few fans were there to see it. The Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia seemed determined to ramp up the occasion as the Blues took on Los Angeles on Monday. Each Chelsea player was given a lengthy introduction, the sound of bells blared over the speakers. An enthusiastic announcer then gave a ten-second countdown to kick-off, apparently undeterred by the fact there were huge sections of empty seats in the 71,000 capacity stadium. Tickets for general admission were on sale for £38 and early estimates had the attendance at around 26,000 with the entire top tier of the stadium closed. FIFA have been concerned about attendances for the tournament and had reduced tickets after poor take-up. However, before Chelsea's game, attendances had been healthy. Inter Miami's opening match of the tournament, with Lionel Messi the star attraction, drew 60,927 for their game with Al Ahly. More than 80,000 were in the Rose Bowl on Sunday to watch Paris-Saint Germain's 4-0 win over Atletico Madrid. But the game in Atlanta evidently failed to have the same attraction. That is despite the fact Atlanta is one of the States' footballing hotbeds. This city is home to both the MLS's best supported football team, Atlanta United, which averages 44,037 fans per match, along with the new home to the US Soccer various teams, including Mauricio Pochettino's men's team and Emma Hayes's women's team. Chelsea almost sold out this stadium two years ago with over 70,000 fans watching them face Newcastle in a friendly tournament named the Premier League Summer Series. One explanation for the low attendance may be the kick-off time of 3pm on a workday - a timing which seems to have European TV audiences more in mind than locals.. Fans were left cringing on social media at the lack of support for Enzo Maresca's side. One wrote on X: 'Chelsea fans told me for years they are big in America and North America, look at those empty seats.' While another added: 'What nonsense is this announcing Chelsea and lafc players individually at #FIFAClubWorldCup2025 , americans must stop trying to americanize things that work perfectly. If It Ain't Broke ... stadium is painfully empty yet a team from america is playing.'

ESPN's Lisa Salters returns to NBA Finals after tending to mother's health crisis with her WNBA coach partner
NBA sideline reporter Lisa Salters is expected back for Game 5 of the ongoing NBA Finals in Oklahoma City on Monday night after she and her partner, Indiana Fever coach Stephanie White, took time off due to an illness in their family. Jorge Sedano has been filling in for Salters, the beloved ESPN contributor and on-air partner to the announcing trio of Mike Breen, Doris Burke and Richard Jefferson. In her absence, play-by-play announcer Mike Breen issued a touching message to Salters and her mother, who has been battling health problems. 'We are thinking of our dear friend and colleague, Lisa Salters,' the Hall-of-Fame announcer said during the Thunder's Game 2 win over the visiting Pacers on June 8 in Oklahoma City. 'Lisa's mom has been dealing with some serious health issues for a while now, so we want to send our love to Lisa and her mom. 'Although we've never met her mom, we owe her a debt of gratitude for giving us the gift of Lisa Salters, who is the teammate everyone in our business should strive to have,' Breen added. Further details on the health of Salters' mother have not been revealed. Salters has been a tremendous asset for WBAL-TV in Baltimore and ESPN, covering everything from the OJ Simpson murder trial to Olympic and World Cup coverage. But it's in the NBA where she's become most recognized. There had been some curiosity about Salters' absence before Breen's announcement as fans noticed the former Penn State guard was missing from ABC's Game 2 broadcast. Just days earlier, Salters' partner and Indiana Fever head coach Stephanie White missed a game due to 'personal reasons.' 'Lisa Salters and Stephanie White both skipping work for personal reasons,' conservative sports media personality Jason Whitlock wrote on X. 'I'll be interested to hear the explanation.' That explanation now appears to be related to the health of Salters' mother – something Whitlock's followers suspected before Breen's announcement. 'It's probably family related and if I were to guess involves a parent,' one person wrote on X in response to Whitlock. 'I'm positive they have very good reason.' White and Salters have been romantically involved since at least 2016, according to multiple reports. The longtime partners raise a blended family, sharing four sons - White's three biological children, Landon, 13, and twins Aiden and Avery, 11, from a previous marriage, and Salters' adopted son, Samuel, 11. However, despite their lengthy relationship, some social media users were stunned to learn of their romance. 'Learning Lisa Salters is actually in a relationship to Stephanie White was kinda mind blowing for me,' one user wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter.
