Report: FAMU hiring Charlie Ward as men's hoops coach
April 16 - Florida A&M is finalizing a deal to hire former Heisman Trophy winner Charlie Ward as its men's basketball coach, ESPN reported Wednesday.
Ward, 54, played football and basketball at Florida State from 1990-94, winning a national championship and the Heisman as the Seminoles quarterback in 1993 before playing 11 seasons in the NBA from 1994-2005.
Ward has been coaching in the high school ranks since 2007, most recently with Florida State University Schools in Tallahassee since 2018.
Florida A&M, located in Tallahassee, finished 14-17 in 2024-25 in its first season under coach Patrick Crarey II, who left to take the coaching position at Grambling State. The Rattlers, members of the SWAC, have not been to the NCAA Tournament since 2007.
A first-round pick by New York in 1994, Ward averaged 6.3 points and 4.0 assists in 630 career NBA games with the Knicks (1994-2004), San Antonio Spurs (2004) and the Houston Rockets (2004-05).
Ward swept most of the major college football honors in 1993, winning the Maxwell, Walter Camp, Johnny Unitas Golden Arm, Davey O'Brien and James E. Sullivan awards in addition to the Heisman. Florida State retired his No. 17 football jersey.
On the basketball court, Ward played in 91 games for the Seminoles and averaged 8.1 points, 4.4 assists and 3.1 rebounds per game.

June 10 - Colorado football coach Deion Sanders is at his home in Texas dealing with an "unspecified health issue," ESPN reported Tuesday. Sanders, 57, was away from campus as the school's annual summer football camps began last week, according to USA Today. The Pro Football Hall of Famer's oldest son, Deion Sanders Jr., said his father was "feeling well" in a livestream on YouTube Sunday, but there is no timetable for his return. "He'll tell y'all soon enough what he's going through, what he went through," Deion Jr. stated, according to USA Today. "When we get back to Boulder? I don't know. I'm waiting until my dad leaves. When he leaves, then I'll go. Until then, I'm going to sit here with him." Colorado opens the season at home against Georgia Tech on Aug. 29. The Buffaloes finished 9-4 (7-2 Big 12) in Sanders' second season in 2024 but lost two of their most high-profile players -- Heisman Trophy winner Travis Hunter and quarterback (and coach's son) Shedeur Sanders -- to the 2025 NFL Draft. Deion Sanders has dealt with health problems in the recent past. He had two toes amputated in 2022 due to blood clots and also missed the Pac-12 media day in 2023 because of blood clots in his legs. Sanders had been scheduled to speak last weekend at a medical conference in Florida but had to cancel. Opening the road at Rally Sardinia was ‘proper punishment' after mishap, admits Josh McErlean
McErlean ran wide during the 'Telti-Calangianus-Berchidda' test, causing significant damage to the left-rear corner of his Puma Rally1 including its damper and driveshaft. Incredibly, all three Puma cars came a cropper on the 11.5-mile stretch of road – Martins Sesks walked away from a roll, while Gregoire Munster suffered a similar fate to McErlean. M-Sport mechanics worked wonders to fix the Kilrea man's machine on Friday and have it ready for the following day, but the trade-off for rejoining under the 'Super Rally' rule meant the Motorsport Ireland Rally Academy member had to run first with co-driver Eoin Treacy. With more than six minutes of time penalties applied, adding to his points total on the sun-drenched island was always going to be a tall order. Instead, the 25-year-old used the seat time as an extended test for the Acropolis Rally on June 26-29. 'Running first on the road Saturday and Sunday following the mistake on Friday is proper punishment – I don't think anyone needs to shout at me, I fully understand why you can't make mistakes,' admitted McErlean. 'It was my first time running first on the road and opening a rally – any type of rally – so I have learned a lot from that, even on the Sunday when, second time over the stages, there were more ruts and surface changes. We can take some things forward into Greece. 'It was definitely a nasty rally. It was a shame because, I think on the Friday, we had the pace to have a strong day, but it was my mistake on the second stage, running wide and hitting the tree and taking the rear-left wheel off it. 'This weekend shows you that you need to have a good start to these rallies, especially if you are running further down the field. We knew that Sardinia would be a tough rally but, in actual fact, it turned out to be brutal.' Rally Sardinia was awash with drama that continued up until the closing Power Stage when an overshoot for leader and eventual winner Sebastien Ogier (Toyota Gazoo Racing) slashed his buffer over runner-up Ott Tanak (Hyundai Motorsport). The Frenchman held on to make it two victories on the bounce following his success at May's Rally de Portugal.
