Charlie Ward was charged after police received a report of a motorist impersonating a police officer by using flashing lights to stop another vehicle at the Crankill Road dual-carriageway near Ballymena last year. The 21-year-old, with an address listed as Downpatrick Road, Killough, Co Down, is charged with impersonating a police officer on December 28. During the alleged incident the driver of the other car pulled over believing Ward was the PSNI but grew suspicious when Ward was unable to provide any ID to confirm this. Ward was driving an Audi A3 and a police report at the time of the incident, which was released to the press, stated there were two other men in the back of his car. It also said that even after the person had driven off after becoming concerned, Ward continued to follow the driver. This is the Co Down driver accused of pretending to be a cop and flashing down another driver News in 90 Seconds - May 18th Speaking to the Sunday World this week, a sheepish Ward said: 'It was just a prank – I didn't realise how serious it would turn out to be – but here we are.' He said he'd be pleading guilty to the charges but didn't know when the next hearing was scheduled. And he added politely: 'I regret it big time – don't suppose there's anyway you can keep it out of the paper?' The particulars of the charge are 'with intent to deceive impersonated a member of the police force, or makes a statement or did an act calculated falsely to suggest that he was such a member, contrary to Section 67(1) Police (Northern Ireland) Act 1998'. Ward is further accused of driving dangerously on roads, according to the charge sheet, between Crankill Road and Sandyknowes on the M2 motorway on December 28. Court News NI reported the case was mentioned at Ballymena Magistrates Court this week. No details were given to the court about the background to the charges and the case was adjourned to later this month to get the defendant's attitude to the charges he faces. Charlie Ward was charged after police received a report of a motorist impersonating a police officer by using flashing lights to stop another vehicle at the Crankill Road dual-carriageway near Ballymena. In December police issued a press release saying they received a report of a man impersonating a police officer in the Ballymena area. Chief Inspector Redmond said: 'We received a report at approximately 7.30pm on Saturday, 28th December that a dark-coloured Audi A3, driven by a man, used flashing lights to stop another car in the Crankill Road area. 'The member of the public believed this to be a police vehicle and pulled over. However, he became suspicious when the man could not produce any form of official police identification and was not wearing a uniform. 'We understand two other men were also in the back of the car. He subsequently drove off and was followed by the suspicious vehicle for a short time before reporting what happened to police.'

Charlie Ward emerges as top candidate for FAMU basketball head coach opening

Could one of the greatest dual-sport athletes in college history be headed to the sidelines at Florida A&M? Florida A&M University's search for a new head basketball coach has taken a high-profile turn, as legendary Florida State star Charlie Ward has emerged as a serious candidate for the job. Following the departure of Patrick Crarey to Grambling, the Rattlers are looking to reset after a tough 9-21 season—and Ward could be the game-changer they need. Ward's name carries weight in the state of Florida. He won the 1993 Heisman Trophy as a quarterback and led Florida State to a national title. But what makes Ward a rare breed is what came next: a 12-year career in the NBA, highlighted by a nine-year run with the New York Knicks and a starting role in the 1999 NBA Finals. Despite his gridiron greatness, Ward never played in the NFL—opting instead for basketball, where he carved out a respected career in one of the world's toughest leagues. Advertisement Ward was more than just a football star—he was a point guard who dished out nearly 400 assists and still holds Florida State records for steals. His basketball IQ, leadership, and defensive prowess were hallmarks of his game, traits that could instantly elevate the culture in Tallahassee. Since retiring, he's built a solid coaching resume, leading Florida High's program and mentoring young athletes with a focus on discipline and development. He was recently named USA Basketball assistant coach for the 2025 Nike Hoop Summit. Related: Stephen A. Smith: 'I have no choice' but to consider presidential bid Ward's deep Florida ties, elite athletic background, and proven mentorship align perfectly with FAMU's goals. At a time when HBCU programs are gaining national attention, hiring someone with Ward's profile would make an immediate impact—on the court and in recruiting circles. He's not just a former pro—he's a symbol of excellence and a beacon for student-athletes who dream big. Related: Morgan Price makes history as a repeat champion FAMU has a chance to make a statement. Bringing in Charlie Ward wouldn't just fill a vacancy—it would ignite a movement. The Rattlers need more than a coach; they need a leader. And Ward might just be the perfect fit. Charlie Ward sings JUCO All-American as first HBCU recruit

Florida A&M University (FAMU) has ushered in a new era for its men's basketball program with the appointment of Charlie Ward as head coach. Ward, a former NBA veteran and Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback, brings a wealth of experience and a deep connection to the HBCU community. His first significant move in this role is the signing of Devere Palmer Jr., a standout forward from Monroe College and a 2024-25 NJCAA Division I All-American. Charlie Ward's athletic journey is remarkable. He won the Heisman Trophy in 1993 as Florida State University's quarterback. He later transitioned to professional basketball, playing 11 seasons in the NBA with teams like the New York Knicks, San Antonio Spurs, and Houston Rockets. After retiring in 2004, Ward began coaching with the Houston Rockets under Jeff Van Gundy. He then served as an assistant basketball coach and head football coach at Westbury Christian School in Houston. In 2022, he led Florida High School to its first state basketball championship since 1963. Ward's ties to FAMU are profound. His parents met at the HBCU, and he was born on the university's campus, making his return as head coach a full-circle moment. Devere Palmer Jr., a 6-foot-6 forward from Queens, New York, had an impressive sophomore season at Monroe College. He averaged 13.7 points and 5.5 rebounds per game. Shooting nearly 49% from the field and 79.2% from the free-throw line. His performance earned him a spot on the NJCAA Division I All-America Team. Palmer's high-energy play and scoring ability make him a valuable addition to the Rattlers. As FAMU aims to revitalize its program under Ward's leadership. Charlie Ward's coaching style aligns closely with HBCU values by emphasizing character development, community engagement, and holistic education. Ward is a mentor at his core, shaped by his journey through athletics, faith, and education. These qualities resonate strongly with HBCU traditions, prioritizing developing leaders on and off the field. Reflecting on his role as a coach and mentor, Ward has stated, 'You have to have coaches and teachers that will hold you accountable, and certainly be accountable to our Heavenly Father. So that's the challenge that we face as leaders and men of God or women of God.' This perspective underscores his dedication to instilling values of accountability and spiritual growth in his players. This aligns with the mission of HBCUs to develop well-rounded individuals.
