Charlie Ward emerges as top candidate for FAMU basketball head coach opening
Could one of the greatest dual-sport athletes in college history be headed to the sidelines at Florida A&M?
Florida A&M University's search for a new head basketball coach has taken a high-profile turn, as legendary Florida State star Charlie Ward has emerged as a serious candidate for the job. Following the departure of Patrick Crarey to Grambling, the Rattlers are looking to reset after a tough 9-21 season—and Ward could be the game-changer they need.
Ward's name carries weight in the state of Florida. He won the 1993 Heisman Trophy as a quarterback and led Florida State to a national title. But what makes Ward a rare breed is what came next: a 12-year career in the NBA, highlighted by a nine-year run with the New York Knicks and a starting role in the 1999 NBA Finals. Despite his gridiron greatness, Ward never played in the NFL—opting instead for basketball, where he carved out a respected career in one of the world's toughest leagues.

Ward was more than just a football star—he was a point guard who dished out nearly 400 assists and still holds Florida State records for steals. His basketball IQ, leadership, and defensive prowess were hallmarks of his game, traits that could instantly elevate the culture in Tallahassee. Since retiring, he's built a solid coaching resume, leading Florida High's program and mentoring young athletes with a focus on discipline and development. He was recently named USA Basketball assistant coach for the 2025 Nike Hoop Summit.

Ward's deep Florida ties, elite athletic background, and proven mentorship align perfectly with FAMU's goals. At a time when HBCU programs are gaining national attention, hiring someone with Ward's profile would make an immediate impact—on the court and in recruiting circles. He's not just a former pro—he's a symbol of excellence and a beacon for student-athletes who dream big.

FAMU has a chance to make a statement. Bringing in Charlie Ward wouldn't just fill a vacancy—it would ignite a movement. The Rattlers need more than a coach; they need a leader. And Ward might just be the perfect fit.

NBA rumors: Insider suggests Knicks could steal Celtics veteran
The post NBA rumors: Insider suggests Knicks could steal Celtics veteran appeared first on ClutchPoints. The New York Knicks were two wins short of reaching the NBA Finals, but now they have to go into the offseason wondering what they can do to improve the roster. Advertisement With the starting five looking to be set in stone for now, the one thing the Knicks need to focus on is building depth on the bench. It was obvious that's where most of their problems came from, and getting some solid pieces in the rotation could help them. As free agency begins on June 30, there will be several players whom the Knicks could sign, and one of them has been a veteran on the Boston Celtics, according to ESPN's Tim Bontemps. 'Al Horford is a free agent,' Bontemps said on the Hoop Collective podcast. 'I don't think at this point it makes a lot of sense for … Horford to be back in Boston. Maybe he will be, but given where things are with the Celtics, I think he's now much more in play than he might have been a month ago.' A lot changed for the Celtics when Jayson Tatum went down with a torn Achilles, but there was always a chance that the core group of that team would get broken up during the offseason because of how much money is on their payroll. Horford could find a way to a team that has a better chance of winning next season, and the Knicks do make a lot of sense. Could Al Horford sign with the Knicks? Not only does it make sense for Horford to sign with the Knicks because of basketball reasons, but he also has a connection with one of the players on the team. Advertisement 'Horford is a longtime friend of (Karl-Anthony Towns and) has played with him with the Dominican National team for a long time,' Bontemps said. 'If they go get Al Horford this summer, … I think (he) would be an unbelievable fit on this Knicks roster.' Horford has played an important part for the Celtics on and off the court over the years, and he can be the player that the Knicks are looking for. He would be a solid backup to Towns, and he can play both the 4 and 5, so there are times they may decide to put both on the floor at the same time. It will be an interesting offseason for the Knicks, and hopefully, they can get some quality depth on the team.

Knicks rumors: Teammates frustrated by Karl-Anthony Towns' defensive execution
The post Knicks rumors: Teammates frustrated by Karl-Anthony Towns' defensive execution appeared first on ClutchPoints. After watching their favorite team drop a brutal Game 6 effort against the Indiana Pacers, New York Knicks fans were not particularly happy with Karl-Anthony Towns. Advertisement Once expected to be the missing piece of an NBA Finals-winning roster, KAT was instead a big reason why the team came up short, so much so that multiple personalities were already mocking him in trades for the offseason. And to make matters worse for the KAT camp, James L. Edwards III and Fred Katz of The Athletic dropped a massive article on what went wrong with the Knicks' playoff run that painted the stretch big in a not-so-pleasant light. 'Publicly, Knicks players made veiled comments all season about poor communication causing their inconsistencies,' Edwards III and Katz wrote. 'Behind the scenes, they and coaches expressed frustration with Towns' defensive habits — less concerned with his talent level and more with his process on that end. Too often, Towns executed incorrect coverages without communicating why he did it. After it became a theme, players worried Towns didn't grasp the importance of the matter.' While Towns wasn't exactly known for his ability to play solid defense during his run with the Timberwolves, he was targeted often during the Knicks' playoff run, to the point where games often came down to how many shots he made versus how many he gave up. While some hurt feelings could ease with time, one has to wonder if the Knicks and KAT can continue together without some serious changes. © Soobum Im-Imagn Images PJ Tucker weighs in on the Knicks' dysfunction Elsewhere in The Athletic's breakdown, PJ Tucker commented on the Knicks' issues, noting that communication between teammates is key to executing a successful offense and defense. Advertisement 'They all talk to me. But they didn't talk to each other in real-time, in those situations,' Tucker told The Athletic. 'The situations to get stops, to have help, you know what I'm saying? That, to me, we have talent, but that's 80 percent of everything else – being able to communicate, be able to get stops, to be on the same page on offense, and be able to read each other. We needed to do those things instead of putting our hands up and looking at each other. It's changed. Do I think it needs to get better? One hundred percent. But it's come a long way since I've got here, for sure.' While these comments might not have read as an indictment on KAT's play at the time, there's a reason why Edwards III and Katz included it during their story immediately after commenting on his lack of defensive effort. If the Knicks are going to blast past the Eastern Conference Finals and return to the NBA Finals for the first time this century, it will need to be addressed one way or another.

NBA rumors: Suns' Kevin Durant trade desires could hint at Karl-Anthony Towns
The post NBA rumors: Suns' Kevin Durant trade desires could hint at Karl-Anthony Towns appeared first on ClutchPoints. The Phoenix Suns are working on finding a Kevin Durant trade this summer after a disastrous 2024-25 season resulted in the departure of head coach Mike Budenholzer and a need to shake things up. As the Suns try to retool their roster in what's expected to be a post-Durant world, Matt Moore reports on his Hardwood Paroxysm Substack that they 'have indicated to teams that center is at a premium for them in any KD talks.' Advertisement While Moore notes there's still a chance Durant sticks around, he says fixing the center 'disaster' left behind when Deandre Ayton left is a major priority. This echoes recent reporting from The Stein Line's Jake Fischer, who said upgrading at center is a priority regardless of a Durant trade. Is Karl-Anthony Towns an option? Knowing Phoenix wants to upgrade at center, the mind immediately wanders to New York Knicks star Karl-Anthony Towns. In the aftermath of the Knicks' Eastern Conference Finals loss to the Indiana Pacers, the KAT trade chatter began immediately. While Towns and Jalen Brunson just led New York to its first ECF appearance since 2000, many have questions about if those two can actually win a championship together due to their defensive shortcomings. Bill Simmons opined on a KD-KAT trade earlier this week, citing Towns' close friendship with Devin Booker as a reason for the Suns to pursue the option. KAT and Book played together at Kentucky, nearly pulling off an undefeated season before losing to Wisconsin in the Final Four. If Phoenix truly has no interest in rebuilding, giving Booker a star running mate with whom he has a good relationship makes some sense, even considering Towns' flaws. Advertisement For the Knicks, this would be a drastic move given Towns is so much younger than KD and did just help get this team two wins short of the NBA Finals. Perhaps the thought is this run was a fluke and New York just needs to get out of the KAT business, which is essentially what Simmons argues. Durant isn't what he once was, but he's still a high-level scorer who could take pressure off Brunson, and Mitchell Robinson could potentially be the starting center. (Whether Robinson could hold up without getting hurt is another question, and that goes for KD as well.) The Suns will surely consider all options when it comes to a Kevin Durant trade. If the Knicks are actually serious about trading Karl-Anthony Towns, maybe we see some fireworks.
