Mobile phone users in Egypt saw improved services in Q4 of 2024: NTRA - Society
Mobile phone users in Egypt saw improved voice, internet, and data transmission services in the final quarter of 2024, according to an official assessment by the National Telecom Regulatory Authority (NTRA).
The NTRA, part of the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology (MCIT), assessed 139,000 kilometres of cities and villages, using specialized equipment to test voice calls and data services.
Voice service evaluations have been enhanced to include Voice over LTE (VoLTE) technology, improving call quality. According to the MCIT, Egypt's active mobile subscriptions reached 84.2 million in December 2024, up from 83.8 million a year earlier.
The NTRA report's findings, based on key performance indicators (KPIs), indicate notable improvements in service quality across 114 areas.
Operator performance overview
Vodafone reported improvements in service quality, with areas of poor voice service decreasing from six to two, and areas with poor data transmission dropping from six to four between October and December 2024.
The company's average download speed also rose from 50 Mbps to 52 Mbps during the same period.
Orange, however, saw an increase in areas with poor voice service, which rose from four in October to eight in December. While its data transmission quality remained stable, with no areas reporting poor performance, the company's average download speed improved slightly from 46 Mbps to 48 Mbps.
E& reported gains in both voice and data quality, with poor voice service areas decreasing from 11 to seven, and poor data transmission areas dropping from four to three. The company's average download speed rose from 55 Mbps to 57 Mbps.
WE maintained stable data transmission quality, with just one area reporting poor performance in October and December 2024.
Further, its average download speed declined from 88 Mbps to 83 Mbps. On the voice service front, poor-quality areas dropped from five to two over the same period.
Fastest fixed internet in Africa
In a significant milestone, Egypt was awarded the 2024 Speedtest Award for Africa's fastest fixed internet by Ookla, the global leader in network intelligence and connectivity insights.
As part of its digital infrastructure expansion, Egypt is replacing copper cables with fibre optic networks, aiming to deliver high-speed internet to 60 million citizens across 4,500 villages. This initiative is a key component of the Digital Egypt Strategy, which seeks to enhance connectivity and build a robust digital economy.
Minister of Communications and Information Technology Amr Talaat highlighted Egypt's $3.5 billion investment in digital infrastructure, which has helped increase the country's average fixed broadband speed from 5.4 Mbps in December 2017 to 80.3 Mbps in January 2025.

This underscores technology's impact in creating new employment opportunities. The CEO of Telecom Egypt, Mohamed Nasr, stated that the company's acquisition of the 5G license is part of investments exceeding LE35 billion this year, aimed at improving infrastructure. This investment will enable consumers to enjoy high-level digital services. These investments are designed to reduce response times, support smart cities, and provide unprecedented communication opportunities, he said. Nasr emphasized that 5G represents a revolution in telecommunications, supporting the build-out of a digital economy that strengthens Egypt's global standing. The CEO of Orange Egypt, Yasser Shaker, affirmed that the gathering of telecommunications companies to launch 5G technology from the Pyramids carries a deep symbolic meaning – signifying that Egypt's progress and development stretch from the era of the Pharaohs to the present day. The CEO of Vodafone Egypt, Mohamed Abdallah, stated that the launch of 5G technology, given Egypt's increasing digital awareness, marks a pivotal economic opportunity that will positively impact all sectors – from health to education. He assured Vodafone's commitment, as a strategic partner to the state, towards providing solutions that align with the needs of Egyptian society, supporting digital transformation, and offering advanced services that will contribute to improving community life. And the CEO of e& Egypt, Hazem Metwally, described the launch as a 'redefinition of technology uses and an opening of unprecedented horizons.' He noted that 5G will enable applications such as augmented reality, the Internet of Things, and Artificial Intelligence, reflecting a natural extension of the state's strategic vision.

OPEN// PM witnesses official launch of 5G mobile services in Egypt
CAIRO, June 4 (MENA) - Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouli attended on Wednesday the official launch ceremony of 5G mobile services in Egypt. The event took place in Giza's Pyramids area, in the presence of Minister of Communications and Information Technology Amr Talaat, the governor of Giza, former ICT ministers, and a great host of senior officials from relevant state bodies and mobile network operators (MNOs), including Vodafone Egypt, Orange Egypt, e& Egypt, and Telecom Egypt. This step, which is part of the state's efforts to improve the ICT sector and enhance its digital infrastructure, has crowned the efforts exerted by the National Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (NTRA) in cooperation with ICT companies operating in Egypt. Earlier in October 2024, Egypt awarded its final round of 5G licenses to telecom operators, including a $675 million deal for Vodafone, Orange, and e& Egypt, following a similar agreement with Telecom Egypt earlier that year. The term of the agreement also includes the renewal of licenses for previous generations for 15 years. The introduction of 5G is expected to enhance high-speed connectivity, support the development of smart cities, and enable advancements in sectors such as healthcare and infrastructure. It will support distance education, digital healthcare, e-gaming, smart banking, as well as augmented reality (AR) and AI applications, which improve citizens' digital life, create new opportunities for digital innovation and entrepreneurship, and pave the way for building a strong digital economy in Egypt.
