Controversial American Grandmaster Hans Niemann has hit back at the critics who have accused him of 'hate-watching' Magnus Carlsen's defeat to Levon Aronian as the world No.1 was eliminated from the title race at the Las Vegas Freestyle Chess Grand Slam. Niemann was seen celebrating Carlsen's downfall as he let out animated expressions while being in the commentary booth with GM David Howell and IM Tania Sachdev.
'There are very few pleasures in life that compare to this feeling,' Niemann had said in the commentary booth as Aronian defeated Carlsen in the fourth-spot tie-breaker. 'You know what they say, karma is a…. I don't want to finish the sentence. Levon, I'm taking you to dinner tonight,' he added.

Niemann slams Carlsen's fans
With a defeat to Aronian, Carlsen was relegated to the Lower Bracket quarter-finals and his fans vented out their frustration on Niemann and his celebrations. The 22-year-old Niemann has now hit out at the fans for making accusations against him and reminding them of his struggles since he was labelled a cheat by Carlsen. 'If you think I was hate watching yesterday, what would you call what I've experienced the past three years?' Niemann wrote on X.

Meanwhile, Niemann, who was accused of cheating over the board by Carlsen in 2022 at the Sinquefield Cup, has enjoyed a highly successful tournament in Las Vegas, reaching the final of the Freestyle Chess event, a tournament which is co-owned by Carlsen.
Niemann defeated fellow American GM Fabiano Caruana 2.5-1.5 in the semi-finals, scripting a memorable run and upsetting the odds. He is set to face Aronian in the mega final. Aronian reached the final by defeating Indian Grandmaster Arjun Erigaisi in the semis.
Carlsen, however, is still fighting for the third spot, despite being put out of the title race. Carlsen defeated India's R Praggnanandhaa and Erigaisi in classification matches to qualify for the third spot against Hikaru Nakamura. The winner will take home a mega prize of $100,000.
The winner of the Freestyle Chess Grand Slam Las Vegas leg will earn $200,000.

Who Is Bodhana Sivanandan, 10-Year-Old Record-Breaking Chess Star?

Last Updated: 10-year-old chess prodigy Bodhana Sivanandan from Harrow has beaten GM Peter Wells at the 2025 British Chess Championships. Young chess star Bodhana Sivanandan recently created history to become the youngest girl to defeat a Grand Master at only 10 years old in the final round of the 2025 British Chess Championships, going on to break a record held by American Carissa Shiwen Yip in 2019. Bodhana beat the 60-year-old English chess GM Peter Wells. Sivanandan is from Harrow, a town in Greater London and the daughter of Indian Tamil parents from Tiruchirappalli in Tamil Nadu. She attends the St John Fisher Primary School in Harrow. 'I love to play chess because it helps me to recognise patterns, focus my attention and helps me to learn how to strategise and calculate moves in advance. Also, I like the way the chess pieces move on the board, especially the knight," Bodhana told The Guardian three years back, having started to play the game as a five-year-old during lockdown. English chess master Leonard Barden wrote three years ago, 'Bodhana Sivanandan, who won silver medals in both the rapid and blitz European under-8 girls, is world No 1 girl in blitz in her age group by a whopping margin of 322 Fide points" and 'Sivanandan's medals in Serbia match Houska's fifth place on her debut in the 1988 world girls U10". In the European Schools age group championships held in Rhodes three years ago, Bodhana won all 24 matches she played and gained three gold medals. Bodhana Sivanandan is one of the greatest talents I've witnessed in recent memory. The maturity of her play, her sublime touch, it's truly breathtaking. I have no doubt she will be England's greatest player and most likely one of the greatest the game has ever seen #Chess — Lawrence Trent (@LawrenceTrentIM) December 13, 2023 Two years ago, Bodhana beat veteran British chess player Peter Lee in an exhibition game. Last month, at the age of 10, she became the youngest chess player to earn a Woman GM norm, breaking Chinese GM Hou Yifan's 20-year-old record. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Folk-rock sensation The Lumineers to perform in Delhi as part of ‘The Automatic World Tour'

American folk-rock band The Lumineers will perform in India early next year as part of The Automatic World Tour. The concert is scheduled for February 1, 2026, at Huda Ground, Delhi-NCR, and will be produced and promoted by BookMyShow Live. The Delhi performance will form part of the band's global tour in support of their fifth studio album, Automatic, released in February 2025. Tickets for the event will go on sale on August 13, 2025, at noon, exclusively via BookMyShow. Formed in Denver, Colorado, The Lumineers are led by founding members Wesley Schultz (lead vocals, guitar) and Jeremiah Fraites (drums, percussion, piano). Known for their stripped-down instrumentation and emotionally direct songwriting, the band rose to prominence with their self-titled debut album in 2012, which reached No. 2 on the U.S. Billboard 200 and featured the hit single Ho Hey. That success was followed by albums including Cleopatra (2016), III (2019), and Brightside (2022), each further cementing their reputation in the folk-rock genre. Tracks such as Stubborn Love, Ophelia, Angela, and Cleopatra have become audience favourites, often featuring prominently in their live performances. The band's music has earned them multiple Grammy nominations and a strong global fan base. Known for their dynamic and emotional concerts, The Lumineers have previously performed to sold-out crowds at venues such as Madison Square Garden in New York and the O2 Arena in London, and have appeared at major festivals including Coachella and Glastonbury. The Automatic World Tour aims to bring that same level of energy and intimacy to audiences worldwide. The upcoming Delhi show will offer Indian fans in the chance to hear new tracks from Automatic alongside established favourites.

Cricmax Connect Showcases Cricket Development Vision to U.S. Senator Cory Booker

India PR Distribution New Delhi [India]/ USA, August 11: In a unique convergence of sport, culture, and shared vision, Cricmax Connect, the community-driven cricket movement founded by Indian entrepreneurs in the U.S., marked a symbolic milestone by engaging with U.S. Senator Cory Booker at a private gathering in New Jersey. The interaction, led by Cricmax Connect founder Vinay Bhimjiani, was part of a high-profile gathering bringing together influential voices from U.S. politics and South Asian-led innovation. While the evening primarily supported Senator Booker's leadership initiatives, it sparked a spirited exchange on the evolving role of cricket in American life, especially within the growing Indian diaspora and the next generation of multicultural youth. A key highlight from the event was Senator Booker receiving a custom Cricmax jersey with the number "25:05", a tribute to his historic 25-hour, 5-minute Senate floor speech, a gesture honouring his endurance, advocacy, and progressive leadership. The Senator also signed a cricket bat and engaged in a discussion about cricket's rising popularity in New Jersey, home to a thriving South Asian community. "Cricket is more than a sport; it's a cultural heartbeat for millions," said Vinay Bhimjiani, Founder & CEO of Cricmax Connect. "For us at Cricmax Connect, it's about using cricket as a bridge to create inclusive spaces for youth, celebrate diaspora identity, and reimagine how the sport can thrive in America. Meeting with Senator Booker, a leader who embodies inclusion and resilience, is a powerful signal that the American narrative is ready to embrace cricket in a bigger way. We hope this conversation becomes a stepping stone for deeper collaborations, especially in community development and education through sport." The Cricmax Connect team shared their vision to expand cricket chapters across New Jersey, modeled on their successful community format in New Jersey and Los Angeles. The interaction signals the beginning of broader conversations around sport as soft power, with cricket offering a new lens for cross-cultural dialogue between India and the U.S. This engagement marks a step forward in positioning cricket as a meaningful soft power and community-building tool in America, with Indian-origin entrepreneurs leading the charge.
