Cubs Predicted To Part Ways With Young Pitcher Amid Injury Woes

The Chicago Cubs are loaded with talent, but their starting rotation has lacked a bit. Whether it be by injuries or lack of talent, the Cubs have struggled to consistently put five competitive pitchers in their rotation.
With the trade deadline coming up, it should be expected that the Cubs will look to land an arm or two to replace some of the pitchers on the roster.
FanSided's Zachary Rotman predicted the Cubs would part ways with pitcher Jordan Wicks, seemingly suggesting a demotion to Triple-A, in the coming weeks.
CHICAGO, ILLINOIS - JULY 6: Jordan Wicks #36 of the Chicago Cubs pitches in a game against the St Louis Cardinals at Wrigley Field on July 6, 2025 in Chicago, Illinois.

Matt Dirksen/"Wicks did pitch well his last time out, and he might make a start or two this month with Jameson Taillon sidelined with an injury, but even with Taillon out, the odds of Wicks remaining in the majors past the trade deadline feel pretty slim," Rotman wrote. "The Cubs needed a starting pitcher even with Taillon healthy.
"Taillon's injury will only add to their urgency to add a starter. They can do so and keep whomever they were going to remove from the rotation, presumably Colin Rea, as a starter until Taillon comes back healthy. This would ensure Wicks, a pitcher who has not established himself as MLB-caliber and one who has options, would get sent down to Triple-A."
Sending Wicks to Triple-A seems like the best move for the Cubs, especially if they add a starting pitcher or two at the trade deadline.
Chicago has been connected to starting pitchers like Sandy Alcántara, Seth Lugo, and Zac Gallen ahead of the deadline. If Chicago lands one of these guys, it's likely Wicks is sent down. If the Cubs happen to land two pitchers, Wicks' time in the Windy City is likely over for the season.
But it's all going to hinge on what the Cubs add in the coming weeks.

James McCann and Ketel Marte homer in 4-run 9th as Diamondbacks rally to beat Rangers
ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — James McCann and Ketel Marte homered with two outs in a four-run ninth inning for Arizona to beat the Texas Rangers 6-4 on Wednesday in a game that began with the Diamondbacks facing former teammate Merrill Kelly. Phil Maton (2-4), like Kelly a trade deadline acquisition two weeks ago, struck out the first three batters he faced after taking over with two outs in the eighth. McCann then homered, Blaze Alexander was hit by a pitch and Geraldo Perdomo walked on four pitches before Marte's 23rd homer. The 413-foot shot was Marte's fourth hit of the game, and came after his solo homer in the ninth inning Tuesday night for a 3-2 win. Perdomo hit a solo homer in the fifth of the series finale, two innings after scoring on one of Marte's three singles off Kelly, who exited after six innings with a 3-2 lead. John Curtiss (2-0), the third Arizona reliever, allowed Josh Jung's RBI double in the eighth. Andrew Saalfrank worked a perfect ninth for his first career save. Evan Carter had two hits in his return for Texas after missing 10 games (back spasms). He had an RBI single in the first and doubled ahead of Jake Burger's 12th homer in the fourth that made it 3-1. Key moment Marte was easily thrown out trying to score from second on Adrian Del Castillo's single to end the fifth and keep Texas up 3-2. Right fielder Ezequiel Duran's one-hop throw got to catcher Jonah Heim with Marte still several steps from the plate. Key stat Marte has an NL-best .329 batting average in road games. Up next The Dbacks open a four-game series Thursday night at Colorado, after sweeping the Rockies in three games at home last weekend. Jacob deGrom (10-5, 2.86 ERA), who has lost his last three starts, pitches Friday night when Texas plays at Toronto. ___ AP MLB:

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Daylen Lile's two-out, ninth-inning single boosted the Washington Nationals over the Kansas City Royals 8-7 on Wednesday. After the Royals tied the game in the eighth, Luis García Jr. doubled, then scored on Lile's single to right for the lead. Jose A. Ferrer (4-3) recorded four outs for the win. Carlos Estévez (4-5) took the loss after allowing one run on two hits and a walk in the ninth. The Nationals took a five-run lead in the first, highlighted by Nathaniel Lowe's grand slam. CJ Abrams hit his 16th homer leading off the fourth for a 7-3 Nationals lead. The Royals chipped away with two runs in the first and one in the second before Vinnie Pasquantino's three-run homer cut the Nationals lead to 7-6. Bobby Witt Jr. hit an eighth-inning sacrifice fly to tie the game. Pasquantino has three homers and 11 RBIs in his last four games. Nationals starter Jake Irvin allowed six runs on seven hits and four walks in four innings. Kansas City hitters were 0-for-7 with runners in scoring position against five Washington relievers.
