World Wi-Fi Day: Broadband India Forum President lauds govt's move to open 6 GHz spectrum
New Delhi [India], June 24 (ANI): On the occasion of World Wi-Fi Day, TV Ramachandran, President of the Broadband India Forum (BIF), hailed the government's recent decision to delicense 500 MHz of the 6 GHz spectrum, calling it a significant move for India's digital future.
Speaking to ANI at an event in Delhi, Ramachandran emphasised the importance of the decision, which had been under consideration for several years. 'Today was a very important event... In particular circumstances today, the government has recently launched 500 MHz of delicensed 6 GHz spectrum that has been in the works for the last 3 or 4 years. And it's a great step, probably the first step towards that direction, and this is going to help innovation, R&D, and connectivity for high-data applications...' he said.
The decision came as part of India's efforts to improve digital access, promote Wi-Fi connectivity, and boost innovation and research in the high-speed wireless data space.
The 6 GHz band is expected to play a major role in enhancing Wi-Fi services, especially for bandwidth-heavy applications such as online education, remote work, telemedicine, and IoT (Internet of Things).
Earlier in the day, Union Minister for Communications and Development of North Eastern Region, Jyotiraditya Scindia, in his keynote address at the World Wi-Fi Day Conference organised by the Broadband India Forum, stated that Wi-Fi will be a $22 billion segment in India by 2035, playing a transformative role in the nation's digital journey.
Describing Wi-Fi as 'an invisible force capable of powering visible change,' Scindia hailed India's rapid strides in digital inclusion, noting that India now contributes 46 per cent of global digital transactions. He emphasised that connectivity is no longer a luxury, but a fundamental tool of empowerment, akin to access to capital and infrastructure in previous eras.
'Wi-Fi is not just about internet access; it's about widespread inclusion in India in the future. Every hotspot must become a hope spot,' said Scindia, outlining a vision for grassroots entrepreneurship driven by affordable devices, ubiquitous networks, and deregulated spectrum.
He underscored Prime Minister Modi's vision behind PM-WANI (Wi-Fi Access Network Interface) as a game-changer that democratises digital access, especially in villages. (ANI)

Khyati hospital chairman's bail plea rejected: Rs 8 crore from PMJAY earnings used to clear bank loan, plan new hospital; court told
Khyati Multispeciality Hospital utilised Rs 8 crore from the money allegedly generated through the PM-JAY (Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana) medical procedures for paying off a bank loan in order to 'plan another hospital at Naroda' for which 'targets were given to bring more and more patients', the Ahmedabad Rural District and Sessions court noted on Tuesday while rejecting the regular bail plea of Chairman Kartik Patel, post the filing of chargesheet by the investigating agency. The court considered the prosecution's argument that the defence contention that Patel had not earned or withdrawn a single rupee of the PMJAY earnings 'is misconceived'. The court order said, '…as the amount which was earned by the hospital is utilized for paying Rs 8 crore loan of the bank availed by the Khyati Multi-specialty Hospital… Prior to this incident during the period from March 31, 2022 to November 11, 2024, 3,578 PM-JAY claims for angiography / Angioplasty were placed by Khyati Multi-specialty Hospital and an amount of Rs 16.64 crore was earned. There are evidence of witnesses which suggests that one another hospital at Naroda was planned for which targets were given to bring more and more patients by adopting unethical practice and all the decisions were taken in the meetings under the Chairmanship of the applicant – accused which prima facie reveals that he was having knowledge about the affairs of the hospital…' Patel had sought regular bail citing the principle of parity, referring to the bail granted by the Gujarat High Court to co-accused and non-executive directors Dr Sanjay Patoliya and Rajshri Kothari as well as Chief Executive Officer Rahul Jain, with Patel's counsel arguing that the three accused had 'role almost similar… have been enlarged on bail… while Patel was not involved in the day to day administration of the hospital'. The prosecution, however, had argued that Patel being the Chairman was 'facing charges of conspiracy' and from the statements of other witness doctors, it had come to light that Patel was allegedly 'pressurizing doctors to refer patients' for 'unethical procedures'. The court was not inclined to grant the regular bail while stating that the principle of parity could not be applied, considering the 'seriousness and gravity of the offence'. Principal District and Sessions Judge KM Sojitra considered the submissions of the Special Public Prosecutor Vijay Barot, who emphasised on the fact that Khyati Multispeciality had 'made 91% of its income from PM-JAY medical beneficiary scheme'. Noting the submission of the prosecution in the grounds for rejecting the bail plea of the hospital Chairman, the court also considered that the prosecution had put forth statements of doctors, who are witnesses and had stated that 'referring charges were paid to them and the cheques of the same were signed by (Kartik Patel).' The prosecution placed heavy reliance on the statement of a Cardiologist Dr Jeet Brahmbhatt, who was a witness, and had revealed the 'unethical medical practice and involvement operated by the present applicant'. The court noted that Dr Brahmbhatt, in his statement recorded before the magistrate, had stated that (Patel) used to give targets to the directors to bring more and more patients. 'This witness has joined as Full Time Cardiologist with the hospital and as he did not admit the patients who were not required to undergo angiography / angioplasty, his salary was stopped and he was pressurized to admit the patients and bring them under PM-JAY scheme as he used to keep angiography patients as indoor patient for only one day. Kartik Patel had stopped his payment as the number of patients had reduced due to the said witness,' the court order states. Considering the submission that Patel, as the Chairman of Khyati Multispecialty Hospital has 50.91% share for himself and 0.07% share as HUF and also allegedly presided over fortnightly meetings at the office, where 'strategy to bring more patients and how more and more patients can be brought under the Government welfare scheme was made', the court rejected the bail plea of Patel. Patel has been lodged in judicial custody in the Sabarmati Jail in Ahmedabad since his arrest on January 17, this year.

"Parliamentary committees should not oppose government", says Om Birla
Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], June 24(ANI): The two-day National Conference of Chairpersons of Estimates Committees of Parliament and State / UT Legislatures, inaugurated by the Speaker of the Lok Sabha, Om Birla, on Monday at Maharashtra Vidhan Bhawan, Mumbai, concluded today. Addressing the Valedictory Session, the Speaker of the Lok Sabha, Om Birla, underscored the importance of fostering institutional synergy, enhancing financial accountability, and embracing technology-driven governance to strengthen democratic processes. He highlighted that seamless coordination among various arms of governance is crucial for efficient policy implementation and citizen-centric administration. Emphasising transparency and fiscal responsibility, the Speaker called for robust mechanisms to ensure prudent use of public funds. Furthermore, he advocated for the integration of advanced digital technologies to improve administrative efficiency, promote real-time public service delivery, and uphold the values of good governance in the digital age. Emphasising accountability and innovation in governance, he emphasised that Parliamentary Committees, whether at the Centre or in States, are not opposed to the government but act as supportive and corrective instruments, offering constructive guidance. He added that these committees contribute to transparent, accountable, and effective governance by offering well-researched recommendations and acting as a bridge between the executive and the legislature. The Speaker urged members to uphold the spirit of collaboration and responsibility, reinforcing the committees' role as pillars of parliamentary democracy. He also called for coordination between the Estimates Committees of Parliament and the states/UTs legislatures. Advocating for a robust Committee oversight and technology integration in public spending, Birla noted that by leveraging modern technological tools such as AI and data analytics, oversight mechanisms can become more precise and impactful. He called for empowering Committees with the necessary resources and digital capabilities to monitor expenditures closely, thereby reinforcing fiscal discipline and promoting good governance. Birla stressed that public representatives, given their direct connection with the people, have a deep understanding of ground-level issues and can significantly enhance budget scrutiny through meaningful engagement. The Lok Sabha Speaker mentioned that Estimates Committees must ensure that every rupee spent is for people's welfare. He emphasised that the country's fiscal resources must be utilised efficiently and responsibly. He reiterated that the role of Estimates Committees is not just to monitor expenditure but to ensure that welfare schemes are relevant, accessible, and effective for the common citizen, with a special emphasis on social justice and welfare. Birla stated that technology-driven governance, such as Direct Benefit Transfers, has reduced pilferage and ensured that benefits reach the intended recipients, a goal that Estimates Committees must continue to support. Reflecting on the purpose and impact of the Conference, Birla said that the platform reaffirmed the collective commitment of legislative institutions to fiscal discipline, transparency, and public accountability. Birla also called for wider public engagement with the Committee process and encouraged dissemination of Committee findings to build greater trust in democratic institutions. He suggested that similar conferences be held for other Committees, such as the Privileges Committee, Petitions Committee, and the Committee on Empowerment of Women, to encourage inter-legislative dialogue and promote adoption of best practices. Birla expressed confidence that the consensus and ideas forged at this conference would translate into more efficient, accountable and people-centric governance. The Conference unanimously adopted six key resolutions that lay out a forward-looking roadmap for strengthening Estimates Committees. The Valedictory Address was delivered by the Governor, Maharashtra, C.P. Radhakrishnan. Deputy Chairman, Rajya Sabha, Harivansh, and Chairperson, Committee on Estimates, Parliament of India, Sanjay Jaiswal also spoke on this occasion. Leader of Opposition in Maharashtra Legislative Council, Ambadas Danve, delivered the Welcome Address and Deputy Speaker, Maharashtra Legislative Assembly, Anna Dadu Bansode, delivered the Vote of Thanks. Chairman, Maharashtra Legislative Council, Ram Shinde; Speaker, Maharashtra Legislative Assembly, Rahul Narwekar; Members of Committee on Estimates, Parliament of India; Chairpersons of Committees on Estimates in States and Union Territories Legislatures; Members of Maharashtra Legislature and other dignitaries remained present during the Valedictory Session. Chairpersons and Members of Estimates Committees from 23 States and Union Territories participated in the Conference. The conference, which marks 75 years of the Estimates Committee's journey, brought together key stakeholders to discuss ways to strengthen institutional mechanisms of financial oversight and improve administrative efficiency in the world's largest democracy. Defence Secretary leads Indian delegation to South Africa for 9th Joint Defence Committee meeting in Johannesburg
New Delhi [India], June 24 (ANI): Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh led the Indian delegation to South Africa for the 9th Joint Defence Committee (JDC) meeting, which was held in Johannesburg on June 23 and 24. According to the Ministry of Defence, the South African delegation was headed by Acting Secretary for Defence, Dr Thobekile Gamede. The first day of the meeting commenced with remarks by the two co-chairs, who set the agenda and provided broad guidance to the two sub-committees that report to the JDC. Both sides also briefed each other on the capabilities of their respective defence industries. The Defence Secretary recalled the historic relations with South Africa and expressed satisfaction at the significant progress made in bilateral defence cooperation. He highlighted India's growing prowess in defence manufacturing and exports, and reiterated the commitment to further strengthening relations with South Africa. On the second day of the meeting, areas of mutual interest were discussed, and a way forward for further strengthening India-South Africa relations was identified. Two newly signed agreements in submarine cooperation were exchanged during the meeting. As per the MoD statement, the two subcommittees on Defence Policy and Military Cooperation and Defence Acquisition, Production, Research and Development reported the outcome of the discussions to the JDC. The Indian delegation comprised senior officers from the Department of Defence, the Department of Defence Production, the Services and the Indian High Commission. India-South Africa relations have a shared history, rooted in their common struggle against colonialism. Defence collaboration between the two countries dates back to 1996, with the signing of an MoU on 'Cooperation in the field of Defence Equipment', which was further upgraded by another MoU in 2000.
