Oman signs RO 56 million pacts to boost tourism

MUSCAT: The Ministry of Heritage and Tourism has signed three significant usufruct agreements valued at over RO 56 million to develop integrated tourism projects in the wilayats of Khasab, Nakhal and Sur. The agreements, signed on Sunday, May 25, by Salim bin Mohammed al Mahrouqi, Minister of Heritage and Tourism, mark a major step in Oman's strategy to enhance its tourism sector and diversify the national economy. The first agreement, signed with Omran Group and represented by its CEO Hashel bin Obaid al Mahrouqi, covers the development of Wadi Shab, Wilayat of Sur in Al Sharqiyah South Governorate. This project seeks to position Wadi Shab as a year-round eco-adventure destination, attracting both domestic and international tourists. The planned development will include an adventure park featuring a zipline, mountain climbing trails, suspension bridges, walking paths, and designated swimming areas for both children and adults. The site will also offer restaurants and cafes, all designed to blend with the valley's rich biodiversity, geological features and natural attractions such as clear water pools, caves and waterfalls. With an investment of RO 2 million, the project is expected to be completed within 18 months from the date the agreement is activated. It will also open new opportunities for small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in the area. The second agreement was signed with Khasab Development and Investment Company, represented by its Managing Director Hilal bin Nasser al Harthy, to develop an integrated tourism complex named 'Sandan – The Pearl of Khasab". Located on a 43,658-square-metre plot of government land, the project is strategically situated near key attractions such as Khasab Fort and the Atana Musandam Hotel. It will feature a four-star hotel with 200 rooms, along with 450 residential units available for purchase by Omanis and non-Omanis alike. Complementing these will be a traditional-style market, retail outlets, diverse dining options, and various recreational and service facilities. With an investment cost estimated at RO 17 million, the project is expected to create between 250 and 300 jobs and will be completed within a seven-year period. The third and largest agreement involves Hamyan Investment and Project Development Company, represented by Managing Director Saud bin Hamad al Taie. The company will develop 'Hamyan Village", an integrated tourism complex in the Wilayat of Nakhal, Al Batinah South Governorate. Spanning 201,031 square metres of government land, the project will include a four-star hotel with 156 rooms and 535 residential units comprising villas and apartments, all available for local and foreign ownership. The development will also include a market, various restaurants, a water park, and a range of recreational and service amenities. With a total investment of RO 38 million, the project is expected to be completed within three years and will create between 300 and 350 job opportunities. Commenting on the projects, Dr Rashid bin Saleh al Hinai, Director-General of Planning at the Ministry of Heritage and Tourism, noted that these developments reflect Oman's commitment to sustainable tourism and economic diversification. He highlighted the expected positive impact on local communities through job creation and support for SMEs, while also enhancing Oman's appeal as a leading destination for nature, heritage and adventure tourism. — ONA

Iran, US fifth round of talks today in Rome

Iranian and US negotiators meet in Rome on Friday for a fifth round of nuclear talks, after a public disagreement over Tehran's uranium enrichment. The talks, which began in April, are the highest-level contact since the United States quit a 2015 nuclear accord during President Donald Trump's first term. "The fifth round of talks is to begin in Rome later today. Both sides aim to explore peaceful solutions and foster a conducive dialogue environment to reach an understanding regarding the outstanding issues," the Foreign Ministry said. Since returning to the office, Trump has revived his "maximum pressure" campaign on Iran, backing talks but warning of military action if diplomacy fails. Iran wants a new deal to ease sanctions, which have battered its economy. The last round of talks, in the capital Muscat, ended with differences over enrichment. US envoy Steve Witkoff said Washington "could not authorise even one percent" enrichment -- a position Tehran called a red line, citing its rights under the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty. - 'Fundamental differences' - Ahead of Friday's talks, Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said "fundamental differences" remained with the United States, while adding that Tehran was open to its nuclear sites undergoing more inspections. "We will not have an agreement at all" if the United States wants to prevent Iran from enriching uranium, Araghchi said. Iran's official IRNA news agency reported that the talks in the Italian capital were scheduled to begin at 1:00 pm (1100 GMT). They come ahead of a June meeting of the UN nuclear watchdog, the Vienna-based International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), and the October expiry of the 2015 accord. The deal, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, aimed to allay Western suspicions that Iran was seeking a nuclear weapons capability, an ambition that Tehran has consistently denied. In return for curbs on its nuclear programme, Iran had received relief from international sanctions. However, the accord was torpedoed in 2018 when Trump unilaterally withdrew the United States and reimposed sanctions. A year later, Iran responded by ramping up its nuclear activities. It is now enriching uranium to 60 percent -- far above the deal's 3.67 percent cap but below the 90 percent level needed for a nuclear warhead. - 'It's quite simple' - Analysts in Tehran said Iran was unlikely to back down. "It's quite simple; if the US expects Iran to halt nuclear enrichment, then there can't be a deal," said Mohammad Marandi, a political scientist who was once an adviser on the nuclear issue. The Atomic Energy Organization of Iran says the country's nuclear industry employs 17,000 people, similar to other countries where uranium is enriched for civilian use. "The Netherlands, Belgium, South Korea, Brazil, and Japan enrich (uranium) without possessing nuclear weapons," its spokesman, Behrouz Kamalvandi, said.

Oman's labour body secures 87 job reinstatements in April

MUSCAT: The General Federation of Oman Workers (GFOW) reported a rise in labour-related disputes and collective job termination notices in April 2025, reinforcing its active role in safeguarding employment stability and promoting fair labour practices across the Sultanate. According to the Federation's latest bulletin, four private sector companies submitted notifications involving the collective termination of 974 employees due to economic conditions. The GFOW's relevant committee approved the termination of 16 non-Omani workers, while also securing the reinstatement of 87 Omani employees through formal mediation processes. During the same period, the GFOW supported workers in 14 cases of individual and collective complaints, which were addressed through dialogue and negotiation sessions. Of these, eight cases were resolved, while six remain ongoing. Legal awareness among the workforce also increased, as the Federation responded to 76 legal inquiries and consultations covering issues such as wages, leave entitlements, contract terms, and working hours. In terms of union organisation, two new trade unions were formed in April. Additionally, three existing trade unions completed alignment procedures to meet national legal requirements. Committees under the GFOW held structured meetings to evaluate employer requests for workforce reduction and to assess complaints related to deteriorating working conditions. The Federation stressed that all measures taken were based on legal due diligence and guided by the principle of prioritising Omani job retention. The GFOW stated that key employment issues addressed during the month included wage disputes, leave entitlements, contract terminations, project completion concerns, and demands for improved working conditions. These issues remain central to the Federation's mandate under the goals of Oman Vision 2040, which promotes labour market resilience, fair governance, and economic participation. In a statement, the Federation reaffirmed its commitment to facilitating social dialogue and protecting the rights of workers through institutional mechanisms and union support. It also urged employers to enhance transparency and engage proactively in resolving disputes.
