Paramount Shows Off Action and Animation at CinemaCon as Skydance Merger Looms

Yahoo04-04-2025

Paramount's Thursday CinemaCon presentation comes as the studio has hit a crossroads. With its upcoming merger with Skydance going through a lengthy government review process, this is expected to be the last time that Paramount chief Brian Robbins will be on the Las Vegas stage.
'I'm incredibly proud of what we've accomplished at Paramount amidst all the noise going on at our parent company,' Robbins said in his speech, which reflected on the century-plus history of the Melrose studio that is about to move under David Ellison's ownership.
Whenever he may exit, Robbins, along with a team that includes film president Mike Ireland and animation president Ramsey Naito, would leave behind a lengthy slate. Robbins listed some of those films in his opening remarks, which include Gina Prince-Bythewood's adaptation of the book series'Children of Blood and Bone,' David Ayer's 'Heart of the Beast,' and the next chapter of one of Paramount's most dependable franchises, 'Sonic the Hedgehog 4.'
Domestic distribution chief Chris Aronson also continued his CinemaCon tradition of dramatic entrances, taking part in a 'Mission: Impossible'-themed motorcycle stunt show, along with candid thoughts on the challenges facing moviegoing.
'We have to offer a premium moviegoing experience, not just charge premium prices,' said Aronson. He praised movie theater chains that are making pro-customer changes like fewer trailers, grassroots marketing to potential moviegoers, daily deals on concessions, and extended matinee prices until 6 PM. To drive that home, he presented a graphic listing theater chains that do each of those things, such as Midwest chain Classic Cinemas, which has extended matinee prices across all of its locations.
But Aronson mixed that constructive criticism with a little dash of snark.
'Discount Tuesdays. Everybody does them. But why not Discount Wednesdays? Unless you're already at full capacity,' he said.
Robbins and Aronson gave way to a presentation that was focused on action and animation, starting with Glen Powell and Edgar Wright presenting their take on 'The Running Man,' which Paramount hopes will play a role similar to what 'Gladiator II' played against 'Wicked' and 'Moana 2' and attract moviegoers who want fight scenes instead of music numbers.
On the comedic side, 'The Lonely Island' member Akiva Schaeffer will bring back the 'Naked Gun' series, which got the audience roaring with laughter when an extended trailer showed a biting acknowledgment of O.J. Simpson's involvement in the series. Ramsey Naito also took the stage to announce the new title for 'The Legend of Aang: The Last Airbender' and new trailers for 'The Smurfs' and 'Spongebob SquarePants: The Search for Squarepants'
And at the end of the show, Tom Cruise took the stage to reveal a new trailer for 'Mission: Impossible: The Final Reckoning' and to present the film's director, Christopher McQuarrie, with the CinemaCon Director of the Year award. He also took a moment to honor the late Val Kilmer, with whom he shared the screen on both 'Top Gun' films.

Billy Bob Thornton Says He Didn't Expect ‘Landman' to Be 'This Successful' and Teases Season 2

'We knew it was going to be successful — we didn't know it was going to be this successful,' Billy Bob Thornton admits of the reaction to his Paramount+ series Landman. The Taylor Sheridan-created show ranked among the top 10 original streaming series during the fourth quarter of 2024, debuting as Paramount+'s biggest premiere in two years, and continued to gain steam through its finale in January. 'It's amazing, we're so proud,' Thornton told The Hollywood Reporter at a Emmy FYC event for the show on Sunday of the show's reception. 'We love the people we work with and so we're proud for everybody involved.' As for reading where season two is going, the star said, 'I loved it. Taylor knows this show very well, he's got a vision for it so it's pretty easy. I didn't expect to read it and go, 'Wait a minute, hang on here.' It was great.' Season two will also see Sam Elliot join as a series regular — 'It's been awesome, I've known Sam since the '80s so he and I go way back,' Thornton said — as well as a return for Andy Garcia's character, who shook up the season one finale. 'He'll be more of a part of it this year for sure,' Thornton confirmed of Garcia, adding, 'Andy and I go way back too, first time working together though.' Garcia was tight-lipped on what season two would have in store for him, joking only 'I'll be there' and that the new scripts are 'Beautiful, just beautiful. The writing is always so strong.' Co-stars Ali Larter, Demi Moore and Jacob Lofland were also in attendance at the L.A. event, with Lofland revealing that after the success of the show, 'it's a whole new life over the last eight months.' The actor, who plays Thornton's son, also noted that as they film season two 'we're kind of slowing down a touch to keep from having heatstrokes' due to the summer heat in Texas and that reading the new episodes has been 'absolutely amazing. Same as the first, you get Taylor's scripts and it's like picking up a book that you can't put down.' Moore returns in an elevated role for season two. Michelle Randolph, meanwhile, who plays Thornton's onscreen daughter, just landed a role on the big screen with Malibu, a horror thriller Tod Williams is directing for Screen Gems. Emmy Predictions via Feinberg Forecast: Scott Updates His Picks With Just Three Days Until Nominations Voting

A note from Scott: We are now just three days away from the June 12 start of the nominations round of voting to determine this year's Primetime Emmy nominees. I'm writing from Newport Beach, where a ton of contenders attended the inaugural Newport Beach TV Fest — which was a blast — between Thursday and Sunday, including Melanie Lynskey of Paramount+ with Showtime's Yellowjackets, Sterling K. Brown of Hulu's Paradise, Billy Bob Thornton of Paramount+'s Landman and three people with whom I recorded episodes of The Hollywood Reporter's Awards Chatter podcast that will post in the coming days: Kate Hudson of Netflix's Running Point, Sam Rockwell of HBO's The White Lotus and, receiving a hero's welcome in his return to, well, the O.C., Adam Brody of Netflix's Nobody Wants This. More from The Hollywood Reporter Ruthless Ending of 'The Penguin' Makes a Potential Season 2 "More Difficult," Says Colin Farrell Hollywood Flashback: The Moment 'SNL' Started Sweeping the Guest Acting Awards Inside Cynthia Erivo's Tonys Afterparty: "I Think We Should All Dance Now" In other news… The frontrunner in most of the limited series categories, Netflix's Adolescence, swept the Gotham TV Awards on June 2. On June 4, The White Lotus stars Walton Goggins and Aimee Lou Wood, supporting actor and actress hopefuls respectively, finally addressed rumors of a supposed feud between them. And Prime Video announced the cancellation of its comedy series Étoile on June 6. It's a bummer because, while the show is not for everyone and was always a long shot to land noms, voters just lost any incentive to check it out and, for those who already had checked it out and liked it, to vote for it. Remember: You can bookmark this page and return to it for Scott's latest picks. Excepting holidays and breaking news events, it will be updated on Mondays. Think of Scott like a meteorologist: his aim is to forecast what will happen, not to advocate for what he thinks should happen. His projections are arrived at by screening shows, analyzing campaigns, consulting voters and referencing history. • May 1, 2025• May 27, 2025• June 2, 2025 Best of The Hollywood Reporter 'The Studio': 30 Famous Faces Who Play (a Version of) Themselves in the Hollywood-Based Series 22 of the Most Shocking Character Deaths in Television History A 'Star Wars' Timeline: All the Movies and TV Shows in the Franchise
