Rory McIlroy determined to embrace adulation on Royal Portrush return
McIlroy admits he struggled to handle the overwhelming support he received and that led to him shooting an eight-over 79 on the first day so that even a second-round 65 could not prevent him missing the cut by a stroke.

Asked for his memories of 2019, the 36-year-old said his Thursday round remained 'a blur' but added: 'I think I remember the ovation I got on the first tee on Thursday and not being prepared for it or not being ready for how I was going to feel or what I was going to feel.
'That walk to the first tee and that ovation – I was a little surprised and a little taken aback. I was like, 'These people really want me to win'.
'I think that brought its own sort of pressure and more internally from myself and not really wanting to let people down. I guess it's just something I didn't mentally prepare for that day or that week.
'But I learned pretty quickly that one of my challenges, especially in a week like this, is controlling myself and controlling that battle.
'I think in '19 I probably tried to isolate and I think it's better for everyone if I embrace it. I think it's better for me because it's nice to be able to accept adulation, even though I struggle with it at times.
'It just makes for a better interaction and not trying to hide away from it. I think it's more embracing everything that's going to come my way this week and not try to shy away from it or hide away from it and I think that'll make for a better experience for everyone involved.'
McIlroy has spoken frequently of struggling for motivation following the completion of the career Grand Slam with victory at the Masters in April.
But he arrived on the Causeway Coast – he had only four hours' sleep before Monday's early practice round – off the back of an encouraging joint-second place at the Scottish Open.
'I'm certainly encouraged by how I've played the last two starts, especially last week in Scotland,' he added.
'I think the two weeks off after the Travelers (Championship) just to reset, to get over here, a bit of a change of scenery has been really nice.
'I'm excited with where my game is. I felt like I showed some really good signs last week. I feel like I'm in a good spot and – not that last week was a pure preparation week – but I definitely feel like it put me in a good spot heading into here.'
The R&A have kept prize money at 2024 levels, meaning Sunday's champion will receive 3.1million US dollars (£2.3m) with the overall total remaining at 17m USD (£12.6m).

The brilliant Irish pair are close pals on and off the golf course and they've both spoken about their relationship Buddies Rory McIlroy and Shane Lowry have become best pals in recent times. The Irish pair have won individual titles as well as teaming-up for triumphs at The Ryder Cup and The Zurich Classic. Ahead of the Open at Royal Portrush, McIlroy and Lowry gave an insight into what they admire most about each other. McIlroy was first in the media room and said: 'We've always been close, but I think we've become very close over the last sort of five or six years. "I think once we both had kids, or at least once I had kids or had a daughter and I see how Shane is with his daughters, and I just think, when I say like a role model, I just think about how he is off the course, how he is able to separate his family life and his normal life from his golfing life. 'Look, I know I'm in a bit of a different position, so it may be a little bit more difficult for me, but it's definitely a place that I strive to be in, to be as comfortable getting away from it as he is in a way and enjoying the fruits of your success and sharing that with your loved ones. That's one of my New Year's resolutions was to have more fun. I think Shane is very good at having fun, and I need more of that in my life.' Lowry gave his response on McIlroy's best trait and said: 'I think his constant work ethic. We have become quite close over the last number of years and I think it's helped both of us. I think I help him, but he helps me as well. I think I certainly feel like I've learned a lot from his work ethic and how I apply myself to the game now. 'Where we live in Florida, there's a lot of players that live there and you go up to the range and there's never a day that goes by where you get there and some of the top players in the world are not there. "So you're like, well, if all these guys are here, we need to be doing it as well. I think my biggest thing, he's done everything there is to do in the game. He finished that in April. And his constant drive to get better every day is admirable.' Lowry won in 2019 as McIlroy missed the cut and the 2019 winner said: 'I reckon that first tee that morning in 2019 was the most nervous I've ever been on the first tee of a tournament. All you want to do is get the ball down the fairway and obviously Rory didn't do that. 'I remember talking to him a little bit in the lead-up to that and he did put a lot of pressure on himself, talking about it being the biggest tournament he's ever going to play and stuff like that. You live and you learn and I'm sure he's not going to do that this week. 'We've talked about it at the odd time but not that much. He doesn't want to talk about what he did on the first hole. I don't mind talking about what I did!'

But the former Celtic, West Ham and Scotland striker couldn't believe his eyes when he realised he was standing next to one of the all-time golfing greats at Turnberry this week. Sign up for Scottish Sun newsletter Sign up 1 Frank McAvennie wit Gary Player at Trump Turnberry McAvennie, 65, shared a picture on social media after he caught up with three-time Masters winner Gary Player on the famous course in Ayrshire. Earlier this year the retired footballer caused a stir on social media when he was pictured with Kylie Minogue during a golf day at Marr Hall. This time he had his fans in awe with his snap with the South African legend who is regarded as one of the best player to have ever lived. Player won 165 professional tournaments over seven decades after turning professional in 1953 at the age of 17. He is only one of six golfers to achieve a career gland slam by winning four majors. Now aged 89, Player enjoyed plenty of success in Scotland as he won two of his three Open Championship titles there. He won the Open Championship at Muirfield in 1959 and at Carnoustie in 1968. Sharing the snap with the golf legend on Instagram, McAvennie wrote: "One of the true legends of golf, Gary Player, down Trump Turnberry Scotland just before teeing off. "Don't get starstruck often, but this guy is a different level and a proper gentleman." Reacting to the post, one fan wrote: "Great photo Macca." Another said: "Brilliant photo Macca."
