Cowboys former first-round pick has to improve to avoid dreaded bust label

Cowboys former first-round pick has to improve to avoid dreaded bust label The 2024 first-round pick was benched last season, but Dallas is giving him a second shot to protect Dak Prescott's blindside.
Tyler Guyton didn't sugarcoat his rookie season performance. He didn't blame injuries... he didn't hide behind coaching turnover... he owned it.
That level of mindset is a positive one to hear, especially for a first-round pick who's already facing questions about whether he can live up to his draft status. Bleacher Report's Matt Holder recently included Guyton on his list of 2024 First-Round Picks Who Must Bounce Back in 2025 to Avoid Bust Label, a nod to just how steep the expectations remain in Dallas.
"I didn't do too good last season, I want to do better, I want to be the guy that can be depended on," Guyton told reporters. "I'm not gonna make any excuses, I just didn't play as good as I needed to last year. I'm coming with a different attitude this year to become a better player."
Guyton, selected 29th overall out of Oklahoma, struggled in both pass protection and the run game. He gave up six sacks, drew 18 flags, and posted a sub-50 overall grade from Pro Football Focus. By the end of the year, the Cowboys benched him in favor of veteran Chuma Edoga.
The team made it clear during this offseason's activities they're giving the second-year tackle another chance. Despite a shaky debut, Dallas didn't bring in a veteran to challenge him, instead opting to develop from within. That includes 2023 fifth-rounder Asim Richards, who saw limited action last season, and rookie Ajani Cornelius, who may need time to adjust to the pro level.
The trust in Guyton is there, but so is the pressure to step up at a spot still looking to replace future Hall of Famer Tyron Smith.
Dallas is still chasing a championship in what feels like the twilight of their current Super Bowl window. With a core that has multiple spots up for grabs, and a quarterback in Dak Prescott who will be 32 and coming off a season-ending hamstring injury, the margin for error is razor thin. And on a line that lost stalwart Zack Martin, who retired this offseason, Guyton stepping up is essential to a young line on a young team looking to return to postseason form.
The Cowboys are betting that mindset shift, and another offseason under his belt, will be enough to solidify him as their left tackle of the future. If not, head coach Brian Schottenheimer and his staff could be forced at trying any of the other options waiting in the wings. But make no mistake, the job is still Guyton's to lose.

Cooper Flagg is expected to be selected by the Dallas Mavericks with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft on June 25. Advertisement The Mavericks secured the top selection in the draft lottery in May and are positioned to add Flagg, a forward coming off an outstanding freshman season at Duke. Flagg averaged 19.2 points, 7.5 rebounds and 4.2 assists in his one-and-done season with the Blue Devils, winning AP Player of the Year and sweeping the voting for the ACC Player and Rookie of the Year awards. He also led Duke to a Final Four appearance in the NCAA Tournament. Duke Blue Devils forward Cooper Flagg (2) reacts after making a last-second shot to end the first half against the Arizona Deutsch-Imagn Images On Tuesday, Cooper Flagg's mother, Kelly Flagg, engaged with a social media post about her son's future with Dallas. The post featured a mixtape of Flagg's college highlights and was captioned, 'Day one posting a video of Cooper Flagg until he wins a title with the Dallas Mavericks.' Advertisement Kelly Flagg liked the post, drawing the attention of the Mavericks fan who originally shared it. The fan capped off his reaction to Kelly Flagg's like by writing, "Our future is bright with our new generational star." Next week, Flagg is set to be the second No. 1 overall pick in Mavericks franchise history, joining Mark Aguirre, the top pick in 1981. It's the first time Dallas has picked in the top five since 2018 when it traded up for Luka Doncic. After a midseason trade that sent Doncic to the Lakers and ultimately led to a missed playoff appearance, Dallas fans are once again seeing light at the end of the tunnel. Tight end Travis Kelce, franchised guard Trey Smith attend Chiefs minicamp

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Four-time All-Pro tight end Travis Kelce and Pro Bowl right guard Trey Smith, who skipped voluntary workouts after receiving the franchise tag, were present for the start of the Kansas City Chiefs' mandatory three-day minicamp Tuesday. Kelce also was absent for the voluntary workouts that had been open to reporters in recent weeks. Smith is hoping to land a long-term contract with the Chiefs, who chose him in the sixth round of the 2021 draft, when his stock had plummeted amid health concerns. He has far outplayed that draft positioning, though, and that is why the Chiefs gave him the franchise tag — essentially a $23.4 million guaranteed salary for the upcoming season. Smith and the Chiefs have until mid-July to work out a new contract, otherwise he will play the season on the one-year deal. Smith was not made available to reporters Tuesday, but the fact that he reported to the mandatory minicamp — rather than risk a potential fine — was noteworthy. Two years ago, defensive tackle Chris Jones held out all summer and into the start of the regular season before eventually agreeing to a contract with Kansas City. 'It's good (Smith) didn't take my approach,' Jones quipped. 'He shouldn't take advice from me.' While the Chiefs worked through several lineups during the roughly 90-minute session, Smith's decision to report did give them an opportunity to see what their revamped offensive line could look like this upcoming season. After they struggled to protect Patrick Mahomes for most of last season, and especially during a lopsided Super Bowl loss to the Eagles, the Chiefs began the makeover by trading two-time All-Pro left guard Joe Thuney to the Bears for a draft pick in March. The Chiefs proceeded to draft Josh Simmons, an offensive tackle from Ohio State, with the final pick in the first round. Simmons was widely considered the top tackle available, but he was coming off a knee injury that caused him to slip to the 32nd overall pick. The Chiefs were confident in their medical workup on him, though, and that gamble appears to be paying off: He was on the field and moving around well during the start of the minicamp. 'Just trying to be available as I can right now,' he said. It's unclear whether Simmons will be a full participant when training camp begins in late July, but things appear to be trending in that direction. And that raises hopes around Kansas City that Mahomes will finally have a capable blind-side protector. 'I wanted to be able to throw the pads on ASAP,' Simmons said. 'Whatever the staff allows me to do, I'm definitely going to do.' Meanwhile, the Chiefs are hopeful that second-year pro Kingsley Suamataia can continue his transition from tackle to guard, and take Thuney's place alongside Simmons on the left side of the line. And when they are joined by All-Pro center Creed Humphrey, Smith at right guard and veteran Jawaan Taylor at right tackle, the Chiefs could have their best offensive line in years. ___

North Texas youth chase Real Madrid dream at elite soccer tryouts

Young soccer players from North Texas gathered in Southlake this week for a shot at a dream few ever get - training with Real Madrid in Spain. ULETE Sports hosted 250 youth athletes from the Dallas-Fort Worth area, but unlike a typical training session, a strong performance could lead to a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Real Madrid tryouts in Texas CBS News Texas Spanish soccer powerhouse Real Madrid, in partnership with global healthcare leader Abbott, hosted a tryout where young athletes competed for a chance to train with the club in Spain. "Just looking at this jersey they gave me for the tryouts I was shocked," said tryout attendee Jake Ciccarello. "It's just so cool being out here." Clint Dempsey inspires young players Having a world-renowned club like Real Madrid hold tryouts in North Texas was exciting enough, but organizers added an American twist. Former U.S. men's national team star Clint Dempsey made a surprise appearance to offer advice and encouragement to the players vying for a spot at "La Fábrica," Real Madrid's famed youth academy. "Clint Dempsey is my hero," Ciccarello said. "I have a signed photo of me and my two brothers, and he signed it and it's hung up on our wall. I love Clint Dempsey. I think he's the best." Youth compete for Madrid dream Dempsey, who has deep ties to Texas, said he was proud to see this kind of opportunity offered in the state. "I'm happy they're doing this in the state of Texas and especially in Dallas, which has been a second home for me," Dempsey said. "Giving the youth access to these type of experiences is only going to make you a better player." Out of the 250 players who tried out, only two will be selected to travel to Madrid. Despite the long odds, the players remained hopeful. Real Madrid opportunity motivates players "It would be a dream come true," Ciccarello said. "Who doesn't want to play for Real Madrid? I mean, they're the best team in the world. They have Kylian Mbappé, Vinícius Júnior, all these great legends of the game. Luka Modrić is still kicking... It would mean everything to me." As this was the inaugural tryout, organizers hinted that more opportunities like this could be offered in the future. Dempsey praises youth talent Whether or not these players make it to Madrid, Dempsey believes events like this are a win for American soccer. "To be honest with you, I think we've always had a lot of great talent," he said. "I don't think that a lot of players that we've had have gotten the opportunity to take it to the next level. Whether it's not being in the right club team or not being able to afford to be on the club team. I think it's great to have these type of opportunities to do something special in your life, and hopefully they take advantage of it."
