
Artist Steven Schneider draws inspiration from daily living, nature
TUPELO – Ringed by trees on the 10-acre property he shares with his wife, Steven Schneider can simply take a peek from the studio he built next to their Colorado-inspired stone-and-wood home for inspiration.
Stepping out onto the back porch with a commanding view overlooking the vast agricultural fields stretching below and into the horizon, the clear turquoise of the pool is inviting, albeit it's still a bit too cool to take a dip.
"It's beautiful out here, isn't it?" he says. "See that cedar over there? I think I'll paint that soon."
The setting is ideal for Schneider, who is in his element. At 70, he has an infectious enthusiasm. His eyes sparkle while describing some of his acrylic canvases.
"I've been through an evolution ... mostly based on nature references," he said "I tend to go back to landscapes. It's a familiar thing. Growing up in south Louisiana, I'm greatly in love with nature. It feels good."
A pre-med major with a fine art minor while in college, Schneider had a revelation while going through the rigors of his studies. While his 3.5 GPA was good, he didn't have the passion for medicine. And his art was as constant companion.
"I piddled in watercolor and this and that ... and I realized I wasn't going to medical school," he said. "The art people were so much more fun, and I blame music, too, since I play a little."
After graduating from the University of Louisiana, he was associated with a gallery in Lafayette, and it didn't take long for one off his paintings to capture the interest of a buyer.
"The gallery called and said, 'Somebody's really interested in your painting and wants to meet you and talk about it,'" he said with a sigh.
That wasn't something he was exactly thrilled to do.
"My initial thought this would be easy. I could stay at home, do these pictures and these paintings and just send then to galleries, and they sell and they send me a check," he said. "It never really worked out that way."
Eventually, he overcame his own hesitation to meet and greet his potential buyers.
'I realized later on that more and more people want to engage with you, the process, what you're all about, and in most cases it's a personal thing if they're going to purchase," he said. "I'm OK with that after 40 years of doing that."
Planting the seed
Schneider tapped into his affinity for the creative process starting at an early age.
"I drew like so many artists, and started drawing as a kid, and discovered I had an aptitude," he said. "I remember in the fourth grade, I was out on the playground drawing, and the teacher put my piece up and asked, 'Who did this?'"
That drawing, a house, planted a seed that has blossomed into a career that now finds his artwork viewed and purchased from Oxford Treehouse Gallery in Oxford, Fischer Galleries in Ridgeland, Justus Fine Art in Hot Springs, and Greg Thompson Fine Art in Little Rock.
He has been inspired by a range of artists — Georges Braque, the founder of Cubism; Van Gogh and his colorful impressionism; surrealists like Salvador Dali, Max Ernst and Marcel Duchamp; the abstract expressionism of Han Hofmann and the graphic styles of Andy Warhol and Franz Klein; and others.
After earning a fine arts degree, Schneider studied advertising design and went into business with his brother. He later opened an ad agency, but after two years, his urge to paint was greater than ever. He wanted to be seen.
"All along I was doing my art and painting, and so what I would do was keep contacting galleries and do my art," he said. "So, when I left the ad agency, it was just me. I would do an advertising piece get some money to get some chickens to throw in the freezer, buy some canvases go paint, have an art show, sell a few pieces and go back and forth between graphic design and painting. So, I guess I've been doing that since the age of 25."
And he was no starving artist.
"I always managed to eat. Advertising paid the steady money," he said.
One person who took interest in Schneider was his wife, Cynthia, who he met at a charity event in Lafayette, some 22 years ago. She was intrigued when she first heard about him.
"I'd always heard about this very elusive, hidden away artist, a total man of mystery," she said.
Cynthia owned a restaurant at the time, and the couple later moved to Donaldsonville, Louisiana, in 2004, where they opened the Schneider Art Gallery and Grapevine Cafe and Gallery and often held events together.
"It was really neat," Steven Schneider said. "Have a little wine, a little art. It really paired well."
Schneider's style
Schneider's art can't be put in a single box, given his various influences. He describes himself as being "compelled to observe and document daily living." He said he draws inspiration from both the "natural and spiritual realms."
His interest in plein air forms a base for his landscapes, with planar shapes combined with realistic impressions.
"I did plein air painting for a while, and it's something I really enjoyed I have a lot of plein air friends but realize there are thousands of them, and I'm just OK," he said. "Within the past four years, I've tried to push a little more unique and personal."
A painting he's working on is inspired by the natural beauty of the Ozarks in northwest Arkansas, where the Schneiders lived for a decade before moving to Tupelo last year. This particular piece is an homage to the Lost Valley Trial in the Buffalo National Forest, the most popular hike in the Ozarks. With sheer rock faces, flowing water and a forested landscape, the trail is being interpreted by Schneider with the blue of the sky, the brown shadowed rock and the green trees playing off each other.
Some of his paintings are referenced by photographs, and with his graphic designer skills, he's learned to manipulate the shapes and colors in order to get it to where he wants to be with his paintbrush.
"I've done oil, watercolor, 3-D assemblies. Acrylic works for me. I've gotten to the point where I can develop colorizations that mimic texture and depth," he said.
Another landscape — called simply, Trace — is inspired by the Natchez Trace. It recently hung at the GumTree Museum of Art in Tupelo, and it speaks to his use of light and shadow.
"The colors just sizzle off each other," Schneider said. "After years of studying art theory and plein air outdoor painting, no longer are all the shadows dark and there's just not much light ... now the shadows are luminous.
"I like the light and focusing on an area where everything else sort of contributes to the lit areas," he added. "You want people to look at a painting and go, 'Wow, that's cool.' I keep wanting to get to that point where people are compelled to look at it and say, 'Wow, for some reason, I really enjoy looking at it.'"
Schneider also has surrealistic paintings like a fireworks stand that caught his eye after a wedding, or a series of paintings of antique vehicles from a junkyard.
What he paints is what he would want to hang in his own home, "Things that are cool and intrigue me."
For example, there is a 60-by-60 painting of his Martin guitar which he admits is for a very specific audience.
Retirement is just a word, not a vocation, but he is trying to be "sort of retired." However, he also feels like he has a lot more time to devote to painting.
"My focus for image making is to interpret and communicate more effectively, while my goal is to reveal some truth that initiates interaction and conversations," he said.

‘Abbott Elementary' Season 4 Took Pains Not to ‘Phone It in': ‘We Want Every Episode to Be a Surprise'
While 'Abbott Elementary' creator and star Quinta Brunson is a noted scholar of classic sitcoms, she does not envy the episode orders of yore. 'Some of my favorite shows had 30 to 40 episode seasons, which is insane,' said the Emmy winner, noting her respect for those older series' hustle. 'But I cannot tell you how hard it is to not make absolute garbage. You start going [into Episode] 22 like 'Honestly, I could phone it in.' We've seen other shows do it. We don't want to do that. We want to continue to make good television. We want every episode to be a surprise. We want you to not [say] 'I'm going to go back to the tired episode of the tired show.' We would like to keep it compelling.' In an event giving the audience a peek inside the 'Abbott Elementary' writers room, as part of IndieWire's Pass the Remote FYC series, produced in partnership with Disney, Brunson and executive producers Patrick Schumacker, Justin Halpern, and Brian Rubenstein, plus co-executive producer Brittani Nichols joined IndieWire's Awards Editor Marcus Jones for a discussion about the show was able to navigate several changes with Season 4, including more episodes, and a big change to the group dynamics. 'From the very first time we talked about [the show] with Quinta, she was like, 'I don't want this to be the Janine and Gregory show. I want it to be an ensemble.' And let me tell you the notes that we would get sometimes from the executives early on was like, 'Can we get more Janine and Gregory?'' He added, 'They wanted it so bad, and we had to push back and be like, 'The show is going to be stronger in the long run.'' Despite the pair finally being a couple in Season 4, the show still managed to spotlight its other characters like Principal Ava (Janelle James) throughout its 22 episodes, an effort that is core to the show's DNA. 'You go back to the Bible of the show, of why you created it. And as we start Season 5, I in my head go, 'What is this show about? It's about teachers in Philadelphia trying to make the best out of what they have.' And so we couldn't let that change to 'This show is about Janine and Gregory', or 'This show is about Ava,' or 'This show is about Barbara.' When you have an ensemble, it has to continue to focus on each character,' said Brunson. The executive producers also highlight that one of the benefits of having a 22-episode season is how that inclusive ethos extends behind the scenes as well. 'It's really important to us to be able to give people their first opportunities, people who are generally looked over. And because we have 22 episodes, we have four assistants who are now on staff of the show, a writer's PA that gets to write an episode of the show, we have first AD's getting to direct,' said Halpern. 'Because we do 22 episodes, and a lot of other shows don't, we are able to actually bring people along and start a bunch of careers.' For instance, Season 4 saw both Schumacker and Nichols make their directorial debuts on the episodes 'The Deli' and 'Music Class,' respectively. While Schumacker shared that directing had been his initial passion, delayed by his writing duties alongside Halpern, Nichols revealed that she had never even thought about directing until she worked alongside 'Abbott Elementary' director and executive producer Randall Einhorn. 'I just was very talkative, and had a lot of opinions, and things that I wanted to get. And he just was like, 'Do you want to direct?' And I just said 'Yes' in the moment, and then we sort of built off of that,' she said. 'Truly, it starts with that question, of just someone being willing to see you, and put attention on you, and ask you the thing that a lot of people in this industry won't ask you. And that is how it came to be, truly, was just this old white guy being like, 'What's going on with you over here?'' As for how 'Abbott Elementary' continues to foster an environment where everyone is seen and heard, despite a rigorous work schedule, Rubenstein said, 'It starts from the top. These are the most generous people I've ever worked with … It sounds ridiculous, but it's true, everyone is so nice and amazing on this show, and it's just been the best experience of my career, and I love coming to work.' Cast of "& Juliet" shares love for show's music and theme ahead of Denver Center for Performing Arts shows
On Wednesday evening, the cast and crew of "& Juliet" will open their upbeat production for audiences at the Buell Theatre, but only CBS News Colorado's Dillon Thomas was given advanced access to the production. The show, which plays the Denver Center for the Performing Arts through June 15, is a modern twist on a classic Shakespeare tale. & Juliet DCPA While read or seen Shakespeare before, this musical flips the script. Set to pop anthems, & Juliet's cast promised to bring witty and contemporary takes to the story of Romeo and Juliet. "I saw it and just fell in love with it," said Teal Wicks, the actress who portrays Anne Hathaway in the production. The musical explores the idea of what would have happened to Juliet if she had not died alongside Romeo in the classic tale. The new ending to the story is told through some of the greatest pop hits from the last 30 years, including hits from Brittany Spears, the Backstreet Boys, Kesha, Katy Perry, and more. Kathryn Allison, who portrays Angélique, said the music is one of the biggest draws of being part of the production any given night. "Of course, there is the music which I grew up listening to, which I adore," Allison said. "The fact that I get to sing 'Oops, I did it again' every night is the cherry on top." & Juliet DCPA Though the plot revives and rethinks a tale nearly 500 years old, the cast told Thomas they think it is always fun to see and hear audience reactions when some of their favorite hits suddenly drop perfectly into the storyline. "It is so fun for the audience to recognize the song," Wicks said. "And then, when they hear the song and it is completely different and it is a storytelling song, you can hear them get quiet, lean forward,d and then just go crazy at the end." Allison said the songs not only make ticket holders want to dance and sing along, but they may also bring out emotions in them that were rooted in their upbringing. "These songs came out at a very specific time in everyone's life. So, not only are they in the moment recognizing the song, but they are thinking about where they were and relating to the story at the same time," Allison said. Of course, what would Romeo and Juliet be without the iconic Shakespeare? Though the show predominantly follows the journey of Juliet's life after Romeo, actor Corey Mach portrays the playwright on stage. "It is super nostalgic for me, not just as an actor but as a human being," Mach said. Mach said the show is not only comical, upbeat, and fun. But it is also intelligently woven together to blend the lyrics of the pop hits with the storyline. & Juliet DCPA "The way they chose to meld a scene into a song is so smart," Mach said. While the storyline of the original Romeo and Juliet continues to age with every minute that passes, the cast said they felt the writers of the show found a great way to make it appeal to everyone. "It appeals to a wide range of ages," Allison said. "Yes, Shakespeare was famous a long time ago. But, he is also very clever, hip, and relevant because we are still referencing his storylines all the time," Wicks said. While having a background or general understanding of the original tale is not required in order to enjoy the show, some of the cast said they hoped their production would spark some curiosity in Shakespeare's writing. "My hope is that they studied the text of the original piece and came to the show and saw how it was interwoven throughout," Allison said. In the end, Mach said he hoped the show would bring people joy in both the music and the theme. "Being your own person. Not letting another person's opinion inform how you live your life, there is joy in that aspect as well," Mach said. Tickets to see & Juliet are available online.
